This purchase price reflects a per-share price tag of $14 for LIMS, which closed Monday's trading session near the $10 region.

Needless to say, LIMS was the subject of heavy pre-market trading, which pushed the per-share price closer to the premium paid by ABT. According to the report, ABT will acquire all outstanding equity of LIMS, which currently has roughly $18 million cash in hand.
Continue reading Abbott Labs wishes upon a StarLIMS

Abbott Labs wishes upon a StarLIMS originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 15 Dec 2009 10:40:00 EST. This year there will be nine stocks with a new wrinkle, I will add one naked put.

These options have contributed to a mind-boggling return on my 2009 portfolio, exceeding 200% to date. This has been a very unusual year, and I bet against the rampant fear in the market. I will not pretend for a moment that this is repeatable. What I will do is share my opinions and investing adventure, hoping to stimulate investor interest and dialog.

Continue reading Chasing Value: Ten stocks for 2010 -- Part 5

Chasing Value: Ten stocks for 2010 -- Part 5 originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 23 Nov 2009 13:00:00 EST. The last few weeks the market has been down. Maybe it is because the rapid rise mid-March through mid-June is forcing people to stop and take a breath, or perhaps it is because investors are having second thoughts about whether the "green shoots" Ben Bernanke spoke of in regards to a healing economy were really just weeds.

All in all, I still believe that there is opportunity in this market and I have been trying to point out how investors can get in with as little risk as possible, while being rewarded for their patience now, and when a recovery ensues ---- whenever that is. To this end, two weeks ago I posted Serious Money: Five high-yield, safe, diversified stocks and decided to follow up with another five I think will produce similar results.

Continue reading Serious Money: Five more high yield, safe, diversified stocks -- Part 2

Serious Money: Five more high yield, safe, diversified stocks -- Part 2 originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 14 Jul 2009 13:00:00 EST.
Here, in his industry-leading The Turnaround Letter, he offers a fascinating review of 10 leading drug stocks which he now believes offer a combination of growth potential at "pretty cheap" valuations. Here is his overview.

"In 2000 and 2001, when the Internet boom was becoming a bust, many smart investors turned away from technology stocks and put their money into drug stocks. How could you go wrong with the big pharmaceutical companies?

"Demand for their products was growing as the population aged. These companies had huge research
and development programs that seemed to keep cranking out new blockbuster drugs. And most of them had great balance sheets, with many paying handsome dividends.

"Much of this reasoning has been borne out in the intervening years. Many large drug manufacturers have rung up substantial revenue gains over the last decade. So what's happened to the big drug stocks? With few exceptions they have gone sideways or down - in some cases down a lot.

Continue reading Turnaround time for drug stocks? 10 top picks

Turnaround time for drug stocks? 10 top picks originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 03 Jun 2008 10:10:00 EST. The Merck drug would have directly competed with ABT's own cholesterol drug. If you think that the stock won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on ABT.

After hitting a one-year low of $49.58 in July, the stock hit a one-year high of $61.09 in January. ABT opened this morning at $53.32. So far today the stock has hit a low of $52.97 and a high of $53.73. As of 12:10, ABT is trading at $53.24, up $1.63 (3.2%). The chart for ABT looks bearish and steady, while S&P gives the stock a positive 4 STARS (out of 5) buy rating.

For a bullish hedged play on this stock, I would consider a June bull-put credit spread below the $50 range. A bull-put credit spread is an options position that combines the purchase and sale of put options to hedge risk in case the stock doesn't do what you think but still leverage nice returns. For this particular trade, we will make a 13.6% return in just seven weeks as long as ABT is above $50 at June expiration. Abbott would have to fall by more than 6% before we would start to lose money.
