AMD: Borat Finance - Ish no think so ...

Advance Micro Devices Earnings (NYSE: AMD) are due out after the bell, April 17, 2008. (Click for AMD News). Investors are starting to wonder if AMD is an Acronym for: All Most Dead?

Ever since Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) announced that it had plans to partner with Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), there has been a steady and rather disconcerting direction seen for Advanced Micro Device shares.

The real question is: Is it a buy into earnings? As that insightful financial analyst Borat would say: Ish no think so....

Goldman Sachs has continued its stance on AMD as a SELL: (4/8/08)
AMD downwardly revised its Q108 revenue guidance on Monday after the market close due to lower than expected sales across all business segments. The company now expects Q108 revenues to be -15% qoq or $1.5bn versus its previous expectation that Q108 revenues would be in-line with normal seasonality of -5% to -10% qoq. Additionally, AMD will be implementing a 10% workforce reduction by the end of Q308. We are reducing our estimates on lower revenues: CY08 goes to -$2.20 from -$1.65; CY09 goes to -$1.30 from -$0.75; CY10 goes to -$0.30 from $0.40.

In addition, there is an overriding concern that there has been a continual burn-rate that has become alarming. Now, AMD is saddled with over $5 billion of debt and only $1 billion of cash. Not the right balance for a tech company. This is even more worrisome as we have been seeing a rise in cash for many within the sector. In a recent WSJ article, Pui-Wing Tam explored some of the rationale as companies hoard money to protect against an economic downturn.

She pointed out a few selected tech companies cash positions as a percentage of assets: (source: WSJ/Strategas)
Apple: 62%
Google: 57%
Cisco :41%
Qualcom: 40%
eBay:39%

How does AMD compare to that? Not so well ...

Goldman goes on further to discuss the idea that at the rate of burn they are seeing, AMD will have no other alternative than to do some type of equity offering. Of course this will not be taken well by shareholders who will see further dilution of their holdings. I wonder why investors would buy shares anyway, unless they are hoping for a miraculous buyout/rescue.

Although, there the is the odd notion that Wall Street does not seem to care much if companies are in hock up to their eyebrows. In fact, in this market, AMD could actually thrive as investors are giving a pass to many companies with worse news and outlooks. Even so, while you just have to wonder how much worse it can get, I would not be involved here since there are plenty of other names that seem to have a much better outlook.

Intel earnings: Ho-hum results

We have been blogging positively about Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) since May. However, with ho-hum results reported last night and recent stock appreciation, it may be time to look elsewhere for profits in the semiconductor space.

Intel reported very solid results but not strong enough to drive the stock much higher from here. As we've been blogging since Q1 earnings release, Intel's revenue and gross margins were about to ramp higher, but from listening to last night's results that growth is going to be muted. The company expects only 6% yoy revenue growth, little improvement in gross margin and free cash flow generation which will be difficult to forecast.

The most disturbing aspect of last night's call was Intel's forecast for flat operating expenditures for 2008. This means Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NYSE: AMD) is proving a more formidable competitor and not going to disappear as it has in the past when Intel has targeted market share. This could mean little-to-no revenue growth for 2008.

Also, stock repurchased during the quarter was a measly $100 million. Not a good number. The combination of massive slowdown in share repurchase and flat operating expenditure guidance means Intel is becoming concerned about its sources and uses of cash.

I would take the profits and move elsewhere. It looks like National Semiconductor Corporation (NYSE: NSM) currently has the best growth profile in the semi space.

Another upgrade for Intel

Lehman Brothers upgraded Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) this morning, giving a $28 price target, believing second quarter sales will meet the high-end of guidance as Dell Inc (NASDAQ: DELL) and Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE: HPQ) restock in preparation for an improved PC market.

I have blogged before that I would be aggressively buying the chip maker as both sentiment and fundamentals were changing for the positive. Another bullish sign is gross margin expansion which is on the horizon.

In May, Citigroup's Glen Yeung wrote Intel is "likely to substantially accelerate" its share repurchase program in coming months. Historically, Intel has picked up its share repurchase program when earnings are about to re-accelerate. Intel repurchased a measly $400 million worth of stock in 1Q, but has $16.9 billion to go on its current repurchase program, according to Yeung.

I blogged back in May that I believed it was time to stop chipping away at the chip maker and load up the truck. I continue to believe that.

Intel to increase buybacks

In April, we blogged twice that investors should start chipping away at the chip giant. However, it appears investors should become more aggressive as both sentiment and fundamentals are changing for the positive at Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC).

According to a report released by Citigroup's Glen Yeung, Intel is "likely to substantially accelerate" its share repurchase program in coming months. Historically, Intel has picked up its share repurchase program when earnings are about to re-accelerate.

Intel repurchased a measly $400 million worth of stock in the first quarter, but has $16.9 billion to go on its current repurchase program, according to Yeung.

We blogged in April that Intel was washed out, with not too many sellers remaining. In addition, it appeared gross margin expansion was on the horizon, another bullish sign for the stock. It is time to go from chipping away at Intel's stock and loading the truck up with the Santa Clara-based company. Intel has seriously wounded its nearest competitor AMD, once again, which means Intel has room to increase prices, margins and profits.
