A great university, but an even better stock. Why? American Public University System (APUS), wholly owned by American Public Education, Inc. (APEI), makes a strong case for leadership in its segment by providing online programs to address critical challenges in higher education. As America faces the dual challenges of reining in crippling tuition costs while significantly increasing the number of college graduates receiving a quality education, APUS has found a business model that seems to accomplish both goals.

American Public Education: Enrolling for an IPO
With tough schedules, online education makes a lot of sense for active and reserve military professionals (which total about 2.1 million). In fact, last year the Department of Defense budgeted $430 million for tuition assistance programs. It's turned out to be a big opportunity for American Public Education (APE), which provides online education for military and public service communities.
And now the firm has filed to go public.
APE has 50 degree programs and 48 certificate programs – with topics that cover things like homeland security, criminal justice, intelligence and even liberal arts. There are about 25,000 part-time adult students.
APE has spent millions on developing its online infrastructure – called PAD. It automates admission, orientation, registration, book requests, transcripts, monitoring and so on.
The company's financials are also attractive. From 2002 to 2006, revenues increased from $10.7 million to $40 million. What's more, operating margins are a healthy 19%.
The lead underwriters on the IPO include William Blair and Piper Jaffray. The proposed ticker is "APEI."
The prospectus is located on the SEC website. Also, if you want to check out more recent IPOs, click here.
