This report is long overdue, but I will post it anyway since all of my past year's picks and results have been made public.</p>
<p>The market was very harsh in the early part of 2009, filling investors fear and trepidation, and sinking to a March 9, 2009 bottom. Perhaps some of the bleeding has stopped, but the economy has not healed as bears and bulls seem to carry the day, or every other day.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/31/chasing-value-2009-results-crushed-the-sandp-500/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chasing Value™: 2009 Results Crushed the S&amp;P 500</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/31/chasing-value-2009-results-crushed-the-sandp-500/">Chasing Value™: 2009 Results Crushed the S&amp;P 500</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 31 Aug 2010 10:00:00 EST. This year, however, there's at least one upside. <a target="_blank" href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31904231/ns/business-retail/">Retail sales for June were up 0.6%</a> - substantially better than the 0.4% anticipated - with the gas prices leading the charge. A slight tip in the brutalized auto manufacturer sector helped, as well. This was the largest retail sales increase in five months. </p>
<p>Gas stations benefited from the cost of fuel, adding a bit of pep to a beleaguered retail industry: sales were up 5% year over year, after doing the same in May. And, car dealers had their best month since January: the sales of cars and parts climbed 2.3%. Nonetheless, this corner of the retail world is still off 14.5% from last year. It may have helped last month, but we're still pretty far from a cure. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/07/14/gas-prices-drive-retail-sales-rebound-coveted-brands-still-stru/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Gas prices drive retail sales rebound, coveted brands still struggle</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/07/14/gas-prices-drive-retail-sales-rebound-coveted-brands-still-stru/">Gas prices drive retail sales rebound, coveted brands still struggle</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 14 Jul 2009 16:45:00 EST. Retailers offering big discounts were among the privileges ones as consumers chose to stay away from high prices.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/chi-fri-retail-sales-junejul11,0,5741101.story">Consumers spent on the basics</a>, looking for bargains, boosting sales at some companies like <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys">Wal-Mart</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys">WMT</a>), but resulting in losses for the others like <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/nordstrom-inc/jwn/nys">Nordstrom</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/nordstrom-inc/jwn/nys">JWN</a>) and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/american-eagle-outfitters-inc-new/aeo/nys">American Eagle</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/american-eagle-outfitters-inc-new/aeo/nys">AEO</a>). This confirmed that retailers will face further weak demand even during the back-to-school shopping season, and more deep discounts will be needed.<br /><br />As June is considered a key month for sales, merchants were hoping for a "stimulus" effect from tax rebates, despite worries tied to soaring gasoline and food costs. However, only companies offering cheaper gas like Wal-Mart, <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/costco-wholesale-corporation/cost/nas">Costco</a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/costco-wholesale-corporation/cost/nas">COST</a>) and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/bj-s-wholesale-club-inc/bj/nys">BJ's Wholesale Club</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/bj-s-wholesale-club-inc/bj/nys">BJ</a>) saw their dreams accomplished. Thus, Wal-Mart came with June sales growth of 4.3%, Costco reported a 9% increase in June same-store sales, while BJ's Wholesale saw a growth of 16.5%.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/07/11/discount-merchants-benefit-from-high-sales-in-june/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Discount merchants benefit from high sales in June</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/07/11/discount-merchants-benefit-from-high-sales-in-june/">Discount merchants benefit from high sales in June</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 11 Jul 2008 15:50:00 EST. The ultimate turnaround stock in the sector will be <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/gap-inc-del/gps/nys">Gap Inc.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/gap-inc-del/gps/nys">GPS</a>) because of the new management team. This one may only have the <em>"less bad is good"</em> future, because its shoppers have abandoned it. It's too hard to love the <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/gap-inc-del/gps/nys">Gap</a> and in a <a href="http://www.bloggingbuyouts.com/">private equity</a> absent market the <a href="http://www.247wallst.com/2007/01/cramer_predicts.html">hopes for a buyout seem a bit childish</a>. <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/kohl-s-corporation/kss/nys">Kohl's</a> and American Eagle are both in a spot that could generate serious returns if these go back to their prior highs. <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/american-eagle-outfitters-inc/aeo/nys">American Eagle</a> at $25.00+ would generate close to a 40% gain if it goes back to a year high of $34.80, and Kohl's at $57.00+ would also show close to a 40% gain for it to hit $79.55. <br /><br />It is far too easy to call for the death of the consumer because you'd have to say <em>"But, this time the consumer really will be dead."</em> Rumors of the death of the consumer seem to ALWAYS be exaggerated time after time. The safest bet here for the whole retail sector is perhaps the Merrill Lynch Retail HOLDRs, although you should realize that the big box retail plays dominate this and smaller clothing retail plays are not represented well at all in this one. The other targeted ETF for the group is PowerShares Dynamic Retail. That one does have this specific clothing retail mixed into more of a broad pool. It is just less liquid. <br /><br /><em>Jon Ogg can be reached at jonogg@247wallst.com; he produces the 24/7 Wall St. </em><a href="http://www.247wallst.com/special_situation_newsletter.html"><em>Special Situation Investing Newsletter</em></a><em> and does not own securities in the companies he covers.</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/08/27/cramer-has-retail-bottom-fishing-picks/">Cramer has retail bottom fishing picks</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 27 Aug 2007 19:20:00 EST.
