Most investors would like a "do over."

They look back on certain investments and wish they'd never heard of, much less put money in them. Sure things like your good friend's invention that would make beer in one day from water and weeds. Or your brother's idea of selling real estate on Saturn. Everyone has their own stories. Mine are usually related to private investments in the medical device field or biotech, though I did have one out of Florida that made a "pig" that ran through oil pipelines to check on their safety. After meeting the founder who looked more like a used car salesman that caught a great sale on polyester suits, I should have known better right then. But I didn't.

Amgen (AMGN) logoLate Monday, Amgen (AMGN) unveiled positive results for its bone drug, denosumab. A clinical study of 1,432 men with hormone refractory prostate cancer revealed that denosumab, which is also known as Xgeva, improved bone metastasis-free survival by 4.2 months. However, the overall survival rate was comparable to a placebo group.

Denosumab is already used to treat osteoporosis under the brand name Prolia, and has been approved under the brand name Xgeva for the prevention of skeletal-related events (SREs) in patients with bone metastases from solid tumors. The drug has not yet been approved for the prevention of SREs in multiple myeloma patients.

amgen second quarter earnigns previewShares of biotech giant Amgen, Inc. (AMGN) are trading slightly higher in after hours trading this afternoon after the company delivered better than expected earnings for its second quarter.

Going into this afternoon's earnings report, analysts had been expecting to see Amgen report $1.30 per share, but the company was able to beat out analyst estimates by reporting an actual $1.38 for the quarter.

Amgen Inc. (AMGN) announced this morning that its board of directors has authorized an additional stock buyback of up to $5 billion. The newly approved program adds to AMGN's existing share repurchase plan of roughly $1.2 billion. "This new authorization reflects Amgen's confidence in its long-term prospects," said the biotech firm in a press release.

Apparently, AMGN's confidence is not contagious, with the stock trading fractionally lower at last check. In fact, the stock is now hovering below short-term support from its 10-day moving average, which has been breached only once on a daily closing basis since early November.

After the closing bell rang yesterday, Amgen (NASDAQ: AMGN) announced a second-quarter profit that increased 40% compared to a year ago. The company earned $1.29 per share compared to 84 cents per share a year ago. Not only did the pharmaceutical firm top its previous-year results, but it also outpaced the Street's estimated earnings of $1.16 per share.

Quarterly revenue dropped to $3.71 billion from $3.76 billion a year ago, but AMGN still topped the consensus revenue estimate of $3.58 billion. Total product sales for AMGN increased 1% when taking the impact of foreign exchange out of the equation. Looking ahead, AMGN forecast full-year adjusted earnings between $4.80 and $4.95 per share, far better than its earlier forecast of $4.55 to $4.75 per share and the Street's expected $4.57 per share.

AMGN is scheduled to report Q2 EPS on July 27. AMGN July option implied volatility is at 32, August is at 36, below its 26-week average of 42, according to Track Data, suggesting decreasing price movement.

AMGN logoAmgen (NASDAQ: AMGN - option chain) shares are up big today after the company announced its experimental bone drug, denosumab, was superior to Novartis' (NYSE: NVS) Zometa in preventing complications related to the spread of cancer to bones in a Phase 3 trial. If you think that the stock won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on AMGN.

In the wake of the largest stock market rally in 71 years, according to Bloomberg, the sale of insider shares has reached its most aggressive levels in the past two years. Insiders of companies in the S&P 500 were net sellers for 14 weeks in a row. Six people at Amgen (NASDAQ: AMGN), for example, sold $8.2 million in company stock.

  • Bernstein upgraded Amgen (NASDAQ: AMGN) to Outperform from Market Perform on valuation as it believes threats to the core business are priced in at current levels and upside catalysts may come from pipeline news. The firm raised its target on shares to $65 from $57.
  • Stephens upgraded CyberSource (NASDAQ: CYBS) to Overweight from Equal Weight on valuation as it believes the recent pullback creates a buying opportunity. The firm raised its target on shares to $16 from $14.
