Activision Blizzard (ATVI): 10 reasons to buy

"As a conservative long-term oriented investor I tend to keep individual position sizes to no more than 5% of the overall portfolio; however in the case of Activision Blizzard (ATVI), I'm building a more concentrated position that I expect to pay off in the next two to three years," says Asif Suria.

In his The SINLetter advisory, he offers 10 reasons why he believes the stock is an attractive core long-term investment. He explains, "My goal is to eventually build this position until it represents 20% of my personal portfolio. Here are 10 reasons behind this decision.

1) Activision released the highly anticipated game Call of Duty: Modern Warefare 2 and racked up $310 million in sales from the United States and United Kingdom over a 24 hour period. With Christmas right around the corner, the final sales numbers for this edition of Call of Duty are going to be much bigger.

AvalonBay (AVB): REIT rental returns

"With occupancy rates around 95%, apartment REITs appear to be the one bright spot in the REIT sector," says Asif Suria in The SINLetter; he looks at AvalonBay Communities (NYSE: AVB).

"The company generates nearly half its net operating income from the NY/NJ metro area and New England. California represents an additional 32% of net operating income.

"With a management team that is well respected and leverage that is the lowest of any apartment REIT, AvalonBay has traded at a premium over the last few years and the stock was trading at nearly $150 when I first came across the company in early 2007.

"I continued watching the company over the last two years looking for an opportunity to start a position. With a decline of over 70% from its 2007 high and a yield of 8.1%, this apartment REIT is finally at a level that not only offers a fat yield but also the potential of price appreciation.

Top Stock Picks '09: Activision Blizzard (ATVI)

This post is part of a special annual report -- Top Stock Picks '09 -- in which TheStockAdvisors.com asked 75 leading newsletter advisors to select their favorite investment for the new year.

"The video game industry provides the best entertainment value per dollar and has generally been considered a recession resistant industry," says Asif Suria.

In his SINLetter, the advisor looks to the newly combined game maker Activision Blizzard (NASDAQ: ATVI) as his top investment idea for the coming year.

"October video game retail sales increased 18% year-over-year and software sales jumped a whopping 35% to $696.8 million. November proved to be another good month with both overall and software sales up 10% and 11% respectively.

"However looking at the stock of industry leader Electronics Arts, which has lost more than 70% since the start of this year, this hardly seems to be case. Competitor Take-Two Interactive fared a little better but still lost more than half its value over the same time period.
