AutoZone's Q2: Is the Stock's Fuel Tank Still Full?

AutoZone (AZO), a distributor of replacement items for motorized vehicles, posted a very good second quarter on Tuesday. Net sales increased 4%, and earnings per diluted share went into high gear, rising over 21% to $2.46. According to our earnings preview, the analysts were expecting only $2.34 per share.

Gross margin experienced an expansion, as did the return on invested capital metric (the latter being measured over the trailing four quarters). Both of these developments indicate that execs are skillfully managing the underlying fundamentals of the business. Domestic same-store sales didn't rise as robustly as they did back during the first quarter, moving up only 1%. I would have liked to have seen a better stat on that one, but overall, I'm not going to complain too much, unless I detect a weakening trend in coming months.

The Week in Preview: Fed's Beige Book, More Retail Earnings and Canadian Banks

The Federal Reserve's next Beige Book report is scheduled to be released this week. This report is a compilation of anecdotal information on current economic conditions from each of the 12 Federal Reserve Bank districts, and it is released eight times a year. The data comes from interviews with business contacts, economists, market experts, and other sources. The previous report, released in January, showed some improvement in most districts and growth in consumer spending over the holiday period, though unemployment remained high. The December report showed modest improvement in eight of the districts.

Retailers were in the earnings spotlight last week and for the most part made a strong showing of it. Even as the earnings season winds down, some more retailers are scheduled to release quarterly results this week.

AutoZone drives through analyst expectations in Q1

AutoZone (AZO) is in the fast lane. The stock has done reasonably well this year, and the first-quarter report, released on Tuesday, shows that the company still knows how to drive earnings growth.

According to the company's earnings report, sales increased well over 7% and earnings per share expanded by better than 26%. Income was pegged at $2.82 per share. That was way above the call. Our earnings preview indicates an expectation of $2.66 per share. Clearly, management is doing something right.

AutoZone earnings preview: A cash-for-clunkers dip?

AutoZone Inc. (AZO), the nation's largest aftermarket auto parts chain, is scheduled to discuss its financial results for the fiscal first quarter in a conference call Tuesday, December 8, at 10:00 AM (ET). You can catch the live webcast of the call on the company's website.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expect Autozone to report that its earnings rose 16.2% from a year ago to $2.66 per share. Revenue for the quarter is expected to total $1.6 billion, 7.4% higher than a year ago.

The week in preview: Profit expectations for Costco, Kroger, Movado and others

The earnings season, like the calendar year, is winding down. The sprinkling of quarterly results scheduled for this coming week include S&P 500 components AutoZone (AZO), Ciena (CIEN), H&R Block (HRB) and National Semiconductor (NSM), as well as Dollar General (DG), Imperial Sugar (IPSU), Krispy Kreme Doughnuts (KKD), Men's Wearhouse (MW), Talbots (TLB) and others.

Real bargain stock #1: AutoZone (AZO)

autozoneAutoZone (NYSE: AZO) is a specialty retailer and distributor of automotive replacement parts and accessories. Its stores offer the do-it-yourself car tech tremendous value on parts and accessories. The company stocks all kinds of parts and has a great sales staff. In my experience, their parts personnel have always been very knowledgeable and extremely helpful.

On Sept. 23, the company reported a 3% decline in its fiscal fourth-quarter profit. This decline in earnings could have been the result of the government's "cash for clunkers" plan, which saw many older vehicle owners turn in their cars for a credit toward the purchase of a new vehicle.

Ten high-priced bargain stocks worth the price tag

bargain stocks to buyAs many shoppers have realized in this recession, just because something is cheap doesn't mean it's a bargain.

This is especially true in the stock market, where you definitely get what you pay for.

There have been plenty of low-priced deals on stocks lately, as plenty of good companies watched their shares take a beating in our economic crisis. But that doesn't mean all cheap stocks are worth buying. Unless that bargain goes up in value, it's not a bargain.

The week in preview: Eye on AutoZone, ConAgra, KB Home, Research In Motion ...

Much of the focus this week will no doubt be on the FOMC meeting on interest rates and the subsequent decision, as well as on the G-20 meeting in Pittsburgh, were the agenda will include bonuses for bank executives among other things.

Things will be fairly quiet again on the earnings front as the next earnings season has yet to ramp up. However, analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters do have high hopes for a handful of companies that will release results this week.

Pep Boys tops estimates by a penny in the second quarter, comps decline

The Pep Boys -- Manny, Moe & Jack (NYSE: PBY) issued Q2 earnings on Tuesday after the bell. The aftermarket service business for automobiles, whose related companies include AutoZone (NYSE: AZO) and AutoNation (NYSE: AN), said net sales fell about 2%, and earnings per share increased 50% to 15 cents. The earnings growth was actually better than that since there were a couple of items in the previous year's quarter that benefited the bottom line.

According to Reuters, the expectation was for 14 cents per share in net income. Yep, we got the beat-by-a-penny cliche in full effect here. Management credited cost containment and service sales as drivers for the quarter.

The week in preview: Eye on retail -- Walmart, Macy's, Blockbuster ...

Last week offered mixed messages about whether an economic recovery is indeed underway. The unemployment figures were not as bad as feared, but July sales numbers were nothing to write home about, despite the wild popularity of the so-called cash-for-clunkers program.

The question is, where has consumer confidence (and consumer spending) been? Retail is a good place to look, and as it turns out, this week several shopping mall and strip mall favorites will be reporting earnings for the most recent quarter.

AutoZone and Cracker Barrel beat expectations but fall

As families prepare to hit the roads for their summer vacations, AutoZone Inc. (NYSE: AZO), the nation's largest auto parts supplier, and Cracker Barrel Old Country Store Inc. (NASDAQ: CBRL), a staple for the hungry traveler, both topped Wall Street expectations in their quarterly earnings reports Wednesday.

For its fiscal third quarter, Memphis-based AutoZone reported that net income increased 9.5% from the year-ago quarter to $173.7 million, or $3.13 per share. It was the eleventh consecutive quarter of double-digit earnings per share growth. Net sales of $1.7 billion for the quarter ended May 9, represent a 9.3% increase from a year ago.
