• Countrywide Financial Corporation (NYSE: CFC) announced another 900 job cuts as the company slashes costs in the face of a drop in lending volumes and rising defaults, The Wall Street Journal reported.
• Barron's Online's "Inside Scoop" section reported that CVS Caremark Corporation (NYSE: CVS) chairman Edwin Crawford sold 120K shares worth $45.4M Friday and Tuesday after exercising the same number of options for $2.8M.

• Italian carmaker Fiat (OTC: FIATY) is negotiating with India's Tata Motors Limited (NYSE: TTM) on a joint bid for Ford Motor Company's (NYSE: F) Jaguar and Land Rover divisions, reported the Telegraph.
• British mobile telecom company Vodafone Group (NYSE: VOD) has received a $2B tax bill from the Indian government, reported the U.K. Times.
• The Economic Times reported, citing a source close to the development, that Ranbaxy has joined the bidding on Bradley Pharmaceuticals Inc (NYSE: BDY) by placing a preliminary non-binding bid on the company.

• Ratan Tata, chairman of the Tata Group of India, has confirmed his interest in the Jaguar and Land Rover units of Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F), according to the Wall Street Journal.

• The Washington Post reported that Home Depot Inc (NYSE: HD) has made a deal to sell its supply arm, HD Supply, for $8.5B, down from the original price of $10.3B, to a consortium of private equity firms headed by Carlyle Group, inside sources say.
• According to a sources with knowledge of the discussions, Altria Group Inc (NYSE: MO) is considering spinning off its Philip Morris International division as part of a restructuring plan to increase shareholder value, reported the New York Times.
• A Chinese technology company has expressed interest in buying Seagate Technology (NYSE: STX), reported the New York Times.
• According to senior industry analysts, Dr. Reddy's Laboratories (NYSE: RDY) is eyeing U.S. based Bradley Pharmaceuticals Inc (NYSE: BDY), which is expected to be valued at between $380M-$400M, reported the Economic Times.

MOST NOTEWORTHY:

• Banc of America downgraded shares of Andersons Inc. (NASDAQ: ANDE) to Neutral from Buy, as well as VeraSun Energy (NYSE: VSE), Pacific Ethanol (NASDAQ: PEIX) and Aventine Renewable Energy (NYSE: AVR) to Sell from Neutral. The firm believes new ethanol supply will depress ethanol's premium to gasoline, drive corn prices higher and pressure distillers' grains values.
• Novacea Inc. (NASDAQ: NOVC) was downgraded to Peer Perform from Outperform at Bear Stearns based on valuation and lack of catalysts until 2H08; the firm believes the company's deal with Schering-Plough (NYSE: SGP) is a positive.
• Aimco Properties (NYSE: AIV) was downgraded to Underweight from Equal Weight at Lehman, as the firm does not view AIV as an attractive takeover target.

• EMC Corp. (NYSE: EMC) was downgraded to Peer Perform from Outperform at Bear Stearns based on valuation.

Although short selling -- the practice of selling borrowed shares with the hope of repaying the loan by buying back the shares at a lower price -- goes against the American belief that stocks always go up, I have long been fascinated with it. Short Stories discusses what works, what doesn't, and what some of the leading lights in shorting stocks think about its opportunities and threats. On October 8 I wrote about Bradley Pharmaceuticals (NYSE: BDY) arguing that I would stay away from the stock which was vulnerable both to a short squeeze and to weak fundamentals. Well, according to TheStreet.com, the short squeeze argument won out -- after BDY's CEO offered to take the company private at a 17% premium over its last closing price.

If you had found the short squeeze argument compelling, you could have bought the stock at $16.47 back on October 8 and could lock in a 37% profit if you sold today at its current $22.49. I find this interesting since BDY's CEO offered a lower price -- $21.50 a share.
