Analyst Upgrades

  • Deutsche Bank upgraded Smurfit-Stone (SSCC) to buy from hold after raising its estimates for containerboard names and upped its target for shares to $28 from $22. The firm also raised its price target for International Paper (IP) to $38 from $32, for Packaging Corp. (PKG) to $33 from $28, for Temple-Inland (TIN) to $31 from $28, for Greif (GEF) to $67 from $65, and for Rock-Tenn (RKT) to $70 from $65. All stocks are buy rated.
  • ThinkEquity upgraded VMware (VMW) to buy from hold and has a $90 price target on the stock. The firm expects VMware to benefit from increased virtual infrastructure adoption and improving vSphere solutions.
  • Needham upgraded Cavium Networks (CAVM) to strong buy from buy, citing the recent pullback in shares following Cisco's (CSCO) cautious commentary. The firm has a $37 target on the stock.
  • Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) was upgraded to outperform from neutral at Credit Suisse.
  • MedAssets (MDAS) was upgraded to buy from hold at Auriga.
  • Brookfield Properties (BPO) was upgraded to buy from hold at Citigroup.

Simon Properties Still Wants a Piece of GGP

SPG makes another offer for GGPEarlier this year, General Growth Properties Inc. (GGP) rejected a $10 billion buyout offer from rival Simon Property Group (SPG), but Simon Property is not giving up completely. Wednesday Simon Property announced it would up its offer to $10 per share for GGP in exchange for 25% of the company.

The offer that was quickly rejected a couple of months ago placed a $9 value on GGP stock, and rose some anti-trust concerns.

Analyst Upgrades

  • RBC Capital upgraded FMC Technologies (FMC) to outperform from sector perform. The firm upgraded shares based on expectations that subsea order flow and backlog will be significantly higher than previous forecasts. The firm has a $70 target on shares.
  • Citigroup upgraded ONEOK Partners LP (OKS) to buy from hold due to valuation and maintains a $65 price target on the stock.
  • Needham upgraded Autodesk (ADSK) to buy from hold following the Q4 report and guidance. The firm has a $31 target on the stock.
  • Morgan Stanley upgraded Under Armour (UA) to equal weight from underweight, citing valuation. The firm raised its target to $27 from $23.
  • EOG Resources (EOG) was upgraded to buy from neutral at Goldman.
  • FPL Group (FPL) was upgraded to outperform from neutral at Credit Suisse.
  • Novo Nordisk (NVO) was upgraded to buy from hold at Jefferies.

Analyst upgrades: BHP, RTP and PRU

MOST NOTEWORTHY: BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Prudential Financial were today's noteworthy upgrades:
  • Bernstein upgraded shares of BHP Billiton (NYSE: BHP) and Rio Tinto (NYSE: RTP) to Outperform from Market Perform as they believe urbanization in China will increase demand for metals.
  • Prudential Financial (NYSE: PRU) was raised to Overweight from Underweight at Lehman as they believe the company's exposure to commercial mortgage-backed securities is limited.
OTHER UPGRADES:

Analyst initiations 4-20-07: CHRW, CPKI, MA and TWC initiated today

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Today's noteworthy initiations included MasterCard Inc (MA), Time Warner Cable Inc (TWC), ZymoGenetics, Inc (ZGEN) and California Pizza Kitchen, Inc (CPKI):
  • AG Edwards started MasterCard Inc (NYSE: MA) with a Hold rating, citing near-term concerns about the consumer and valuation.
  • Credit Suisse initiated Time Warner Cable (NYSE: TWC) with a Neutral rating and $41 target.
  • Citigroup initiated ZymoGenetics (NASDAQ: ZGEN) Inc with a Sell rating and $12 target. The firm sees further downside given their belief the Street will lower its Thrombin expectations due to sales disappointment in early 2008.
  • Morgan Keegan initiated shares of California Pizza Kitchen (NASDAQ: CPKI) with an Outperform rating, finding shares compelling given the company's substantial unit growth opportunity.
OTHER INITIATIONS:
  • Buckingham initiated shares of Gentex Corp (NASDAQ: GNTX) with an Underperform with a $14 target, and expects margin pressure to continue.
  • Citigroup started POZEN Inc (NASDAQ: POZN) with a Buy rating and $28 target.
  • BB&T started Tarragon Corp (NASDAQ: TARR) with a Buy rating and $13 target, as the firm believes the proposed spin-off of its home-building business would unlock shareholder value.
