Closing Bell: Bulls Say 'Who Cares!' on Europe and Jobs (BP, NBG, BRCD, TEVA, DRYS, MOT)

The markets looked like they were set for a bad day this morning, after the solid jobs data that was expected turned into a weakening jobs data. TrimTabs actually disputed that data and stocks rallied. The deficit panel also failed to win a super-majority vote. Amazingly, the markets rallied at the end of the day. That, and the rally of the two prior days, made this the best week in a month.

Here were the unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow Jones 11,382.09 +19.68 (0.17%)
S&P 500 1,224.71 +3.18 (0.26%)
Nasdaq 2,591.46 +12.11 (0.47%)

Closing Bell: Geopolitics Trumps Holiday Joy (BRCD, JCG, HRBN, NFLX, DYN, BX, JACK)

Today was a rough day on mostly geopolitical risks and fears. We had another military skirmish reporting round from the Koreas, and that sent bonds higher with stocks lower. Then a FOMC meeting that smells of currency manipulation and official dissent inside the FOMC did nothing to add more confidence. Lastly, Irish banking woes and European concern added pressure as well. Many investors still have big gains and some have decided to lock-in.

Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow Jones 11,036.37 -142.21 (-1.27%)
S&P 500 1,180.73 -17.11 (-1.43%)
Nasdaq 2,494.95 -37.07 (-1.46%)

The Closing Bell: Housing Kills the Rally (ADBE, MSFT, BRCD, IBM)

The Federal Housing Financial Agency reported home prices reached their lowest point in nearly six years. For the twelve months ending in July, the drop was 3.3% compared to the same period a year earlier. The news set a negative tone, and the market was down all day.

Worried investors poured money into gold after a Fed report yesterday showed worrisome data on the economy. The metal hit $1,290 an ounce and may stay in all-time high record territory if fears about GDP expansion spread. Although it was a down day, the markets showed little damage at the close.

Today's closing bell numbers:

Dow Jones 10,739.31 -21.72 (-0.20%)
S&P 500 1,134.27 -5.51 (-0.48%)
Nasdaq 2,334.55 -14.80 (-0.63%)

Closing Bell: Unemployment Pink-Slips the Bears (BRCD, CPB, ZQK, TTWO, PBR, ULTA)

Unemployment and non-Farm payrolls managed to keep the bears in hibernation this Friday, although that post-release gain and cheer was a bit more muted through most of the trading day. The fact that most trading desks were light and that a hurricane was off the east coast and most investors were either not in at all or gone by 11 AM made for a quiet rest of the day.

Here were the unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow Jones 10,447.86 +127.76 (1.24%)
S&P 500 1,104.44 +14.34 (1.32%)
Nasdaq 2,233.75 +33.74 (1.53%)

Closing Bell: Can't go up every day (BAC, HE, HPW, COMS, BRCD, WMT, AMD)

Jobless claims almost went under 500,000 and gave one of the lowest readings this year. Unfortunately that wasn't enough for the market because these likely need to get under 400,000 or so before unemployment will stop rising. Oil inventories took some fuel from oil, but the weak 30-Year Treasury auction and the government's budget deficit kept the six day rally from turning into a 7-day rally.

Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow 10,197.47 -93.79 (-0.91%)
S&P 500 1,087.21 -11.30 (-1.03%)
