Will there be a heated auction? Or will the bidders have doubts and want price concessions?</p>
<p>The result is often much volatility. Just look at Beckman Coulter (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/beckman-coulter-inc/bec/nys">BEC</a>), a top medical diagnostic instruments company. In early December, the company put itself up for sale and the stock price surged to $72. Since then, the shares have traded in band of $71 to $75.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/07/danaher-buys-beckman-coulter/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Danaher Shells Out $6.8 Billion for Beckman Coulter</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/07/danaher-buys-beckman-coulter/">Danaher Shells Out $6.8 Billion for Beckman Coulter</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 07 Feb 2011 10:00:00 EST. In its latest earnings report, there was a net loss of $11 million, or $0.03 per share, up from a loss of $143.3 million in the same period a year ago.</p>
<p>But private equity firms highlight another metric: economic net income. It's supposed to be a better reflection of the earnings. According to this, Blackstone saw a 46% rise to $0.29 per share in profits.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/03/blackstone-earnings/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Blackstone Gets Its Mojo Back</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/03/blackstone-earnings/">Blackstone Gets Its Mojo Back</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 03 Feb 2011 11:00:00 EST. According to Bloomberg.com, Apollo Global Management is prepared <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-01-23/sara-lee-is-said-to-receive-takeover-offer-from-group-led-by-bain-apollo.html">to offer $12 billion</a> for Sara Lee (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/sara-lee-corporation/sle/nys">SLE</a>). The transaction would also include investor C. Dean Metropoulos -- who bought Pabst Brewing in 2010 -- as well as Bain Capital and TPG.</p>
<p>It looks like this is a viable offer even though a strategic buyer is interested (which often can justify a higher valuation). This is JBS SA, a beef processor based in Brazil. An acquisition would certainly have lots of synergy, creating a vertical operation. Interestingly enough, JBS may seek the help of the Blackstone Group (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-blackstone-group-l-p-common-units-representing-limited-partnership-interests/bx/nys">BX</a>).</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/24/sara-lee-buyout/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Buyout Interest Heats Up for Sara Lee</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/24/sara-lee-buyout/">Buyout Interest Heats Up for Sara Lee</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 24 Jan 2011 11:30:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/kkr-and-co-l-p-common-units-representing-limited-partnership-interest/kkr/nys">KKR</a>) have seen strong gains. Of course, part of the reason has been the bull move. But at the same time, the prospects for <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Private%20Equity">private equity</a> are looking brighter. In fact, the upcoming year is shaping up to be strong for public offerings.</p>
<p>According to a <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-01-03/buyout-firms-to-flood-ipo-market-as-kkr-blackstone-unload-lbos.html">report from Bloomberg.com</a>, it looks like private-equity backed deals will account for roughly half the volume. But it looks like its days of independence may soon be over. According to a report in the <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703766704576010150561277320.html?mod=WSJ_article_MoreIn_Deals"><em>Wall Street Journal</em></a>, Beckman is in the process of selling itself. So far in today's trading, the shares are up 27% to $72.57, with the market cap at about $5 billion.</p>
<p>Beckman's products span many categories like biomedical testing and lab automation. The installed base is roughly 200,000. In fact, a large portion of the revenues come from recurring sources (such as refilling supplies for the machines). In other words, Beckman has sturdy cash flow stream.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/10/is-beckman-coulter-buyout-bait/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Is Beckman Coulter Buyout Bait?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/10/is-beckman-coulter-buyout-bait/">Is Beckman Coulter Buyout Bait?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 10 Dec 2010 14:15:00 EST. We had another military skirmish reporting round from the Koreas, and that sent bonds higher with stocks lower. Then a FOMC meeting that <a href="http://247wallst.com/2010/11/23/fomc-minutes-currency-manipulation-duration-dissent/">smells of currency manipulation and official dissent </a>inside the FOMC did nothing to add more confidence. Lastly, Irish banking woes and European concern added pressure as well. Many investors still have big gains and some have decided to lock-in. <br />

However, it is time to take a second look at this private-equity firm gone public.</p>
<p>Blackstone, citing a rebound in the value of its real estate portfolio, surprised Wall Street today by beating analyst expectations by 2 cents per share. The consensus estimate had come in at 16 cents, and Blackstone posted earnings of 18 cents per share on $205 million in profit.</p>
<p>This may be the catalyst the stock needed to help it complete an inverted head-and-shoulders pattern on its chart and send it climbing higher.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/22/bullish-reversal-pattern-on-blackstone-after-earnings/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Bullish Reversal Pattern on Blackstone After Earnings</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/22/bullish-reversal-pattern-on-blackstone-after-earnings/">Bullish Reversal Pattern on Blackstone After Earnings</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 22 Jul 2010 17:00:00 EST. <br />
After a three-year struggle to make this IPO a reality, company founders Henry R. Kravis and George R. Roberts -- who each own 13% of the company -- are excited to see their shares actually start trading on July 15 on the NYSE. After all, they each stand to make nearly $800 million on the venture.<br />
<br />
Individual investors, on the other hand, should avoid this IPO. Here's why.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/07/dont-get-sucked-into-the-kkr-ipo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Don't Get Sucked into the KKR IPO</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/07/dont-get-sucked-into-the-kkr-ipo/">Don't Get Sucked into the KKR IPO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 07 Jul 2010 17:00:00 EST. When trading we work from preconceived assumptions, i.e. are we bullish or bearish. Usually we find traders on both sides of a market.<p>
<a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601109&amp;sid=azLF0Or4yd5c&amp;pos=11">Byron Wien</a> of the Blackstone Group (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-blackstone-group-l-p-common-units-representing-limited-partnership-interests/bx/nys">BX</a>) is in the bullish camp. Valuations didn't fall as much as you might think, meaning that <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601109&amp;sid=agin57fZ6ARo&amp;pos=10">the bargains you usually find during a downturn just aren't showing up this time</a>.<br /> <br /> In the <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/leveragedbuyout/">leveraged buyout</a> market, prices were around 25% higher, on average, than they were in 2001, when the dotcom economy fell apart, according to Standard &amp; Poor's Leveraged Commentary &amp; Data. And transactions closed in the past three months have hit heir highest levels since the <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/tag/privateequity/">private equity</a> market peaked in 2007. <br /> <br /> Says Christopher O'Brien, president for U.S. and Europe of Investcorp Bank BSC, another "golden era" isn't coming. <a target="_blank" href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601109&amp;sid=agin57fZ6ARo&amp;pos=10">He tells <em>Bloomberg News</em></a>, "There's a lot of pressure to put investors' money to work now, and valuations are still high.
