<p>Going into the <a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/category/earnings/">earnings</a> report, analysts had been expecting to see Best Buy report earnings of $1.84 per share for the quarter. Best Buy has been hot-and-cold on the earnings front; during the past four quarters, the company has topped consensus bottom-line estimates twice, and fallen short on two other occasions.</p>
<p>Ahead of the quarterly report, one options player built a bullishly biased spread on BBY. Right after the opening bell Wednesday morning, the trader purchased 358 April 32 calls, and simultaneously sold 716 April 35 calls. In other words, two April 35 calls were sold for every one purchased April 32 call. This strategy is known as a ratio call spread, and it's typically used by traders who are bullish on the underlying equity -- but with a very specific upside target in mind.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/23/best-buy-singled-out-for-a-ratio-call-spread/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Best Buy Singled Out for a Ratio Call Spread Ahead of Earnings</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/23/best-buy-singled-out-for-a-ratio-call-spread/">Best Buy Singled Out for a Ratio Call Spread Ahead of Earnings</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 23 Mar 2011 19:20:00 EST. It seems that the market for used electronics is booming. Much of it is resold to developing countries. But even here in the U.S. consumers are dumping their old iPads and buying the new iPad2, the <a href="http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/937dde18-4c0b-11e0-82df-00144feab49a,s01=1.html#axzz1GVxrEmXZ"><em>Financial Times</em></a> reports.</p>
<p>That sets up a huge secondary market. The big beneficiaries are eBay (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/ebay-inc/ebay/nas" class="inlinked">EBAY</a>) and the Apple Store. On eBay, for example, sales jumped from 3,300 to 7,700 in a week with prices dropping from $531 to $484 in just one week. If buyers had done some research they could have bought the same unit from the Apple Store for $399, according to the <em>FT</em>.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/14/would-you-buy-a-used-ipad/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Would You Buy a Used iPad?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/14/would-you-buy-a-used-ipad/">Would You Buy a Used iPad?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 14 Mar 2011 11:00:00 EST. That's the good news.</p>
<p>But now Best Buy is losing market share. You are probably wondering why this has happened. After all since Circuit City evaporated into bankruptcy, you would think that Best Buy would be king of the hill. Not so. Other trends are developing that are eroding Best Buy's territory. Here are a few them:</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/13/best-buy-losing-market-share/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Best Buy Faces a Bleak Future</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/13/best-buy-losing-market-share/">Best Buy Faces a Bleak Future</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 13 Mar 2011 14:50:00 EST. <br />
The company's stock has struggled to gain ground since Best Buy's <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/category/earnings/" class="inlinked" injectedlink="">earnings</a> release in December 2010. Best Buy has faced limited demand for featured products like 3D TVs, and appears to have underestimated competition from players like Wal-Mart and Amazon.com (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/amazon-com-inc/amzn/nas" class="inlinked" injectedlink="">AMZN</a>).</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/02/best-buy-looking-to-lift-profitability/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Best Buy Looking to Lift Profitability</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/02/best-buy-looking-to-lift-profitability/">Best Buy Looking to Lift Profitability</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 02 Mar 2011 11:00:00 EST. The giant electronic retailer Best Buy (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/best-buy-incorporated/bby/nys">BBY</a>) reported a 4.4% drop in quarterly profit, as stated in the <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704694004576019272298673158.html?mod=WSJ_hp_LEFTWhatsNewsCollection"><em>Wall Street Journal</em></a>. For the quarter ended November 27, profits fell to $217 million from $227 million a year earlier but was up a penny to 54 cents per share. Revenue fell to $11.89 billion from $12.02 billion. Same store sales declined 3.3% compared with a 1.7% increase a year ago. Should investors give their portfolios the gift of the company's stock?<br />
<br />
Last time <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/14/best-buy-up-on-q2-earnings-news/">I wrote</a> about the chain, around the middle of September, the stock was seeing a bid on second-quarter earnings news. Management had beaten expectations at the time, and <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Same-Store%20Sales">same-store sales</a>, while not impressive on an absolute basis, were acceptable when compared with the previous year's number. The shares have performed well since the report; they closed Monday's session at $42.49. A look at the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/best-buy-incorporated/bby/nys/tech-chart">one-year chart</a> shows the recent uptrend.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/07/best-buy-how-is-the-stock-doing/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Best Buy: How Is the Stock Doing?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/07/best-buy-how-is-the-stock-doing/">Best Buy: How Is the Stock Doing?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 07 Dec 2010 10:00:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/gamestop-corp-new/gme/nys">GME</a>) is down about 3.8% at the time of this writing. That places the quote at $20.20. Volume is pretty heavy. According to <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/briefing/rsh-beats-q3-analyst-expectations/rfid380221656/?channel=pf">Briefing.com</a>, net income of 37 cents per share was two pennies ahead of the estimate. <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/same%20store%20sales">Same-store sales</a> increased over 6%. Overall revenue also seemed pretty decent. So why the negative response by the market?<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/25/radioshack-takes-a-hit-after-earnings-report/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>RadioShack Takes a Hit After Earnings Report</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/25/radioshack-takes-a-hit-after-earnings-report/">RadioShack Takes a Hit After Earnings Report</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 25 Oct 2010 15:30:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/gamestop-corp-new/gme/nys">GME</a>) is next. Yes, it's days are numbered, we just don't know what that number is yet.</p>
<p>I have been pondering this for a while, off and on, and did a very limited survey of two teenage boys -- mine -- asking them their thoughts about GameStop. The 17-year-old was playing a game on his Apple (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/apple-inc/aapl/nas">AAPL</a>) MacBook Pro at the time. He said he downloads free games or buys them, but all from the Web. He knew he could buy used games inexpensively at GameStop but had never done so and thought this business activity would fade.</p>
<p>The 14-year-old was also on his Mac, using FaceBook and YouTube. He said he had been to GameStop with friends in the past but never bought anything. Both boys use their cell phones to play games in the car.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/29/chasing-value-are-gamestops-days-numbered/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chasing Value: Are GameStop's Days Numbered?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/29/chasing-value-are-gamestops-days-numbered/">Chasing Value: Are GameStop's Days Numbered?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 29 Sep 2010 09:30:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/apple-inc/aapl/nas" class="inlinked">AAPL</a>) iPad.</p>
<p>While this is not the first time that Apple has teamed up with outside retailers, Target is the largest retailer to date that has agreed to sell the iPad.</p>
<p>You can already buy iPad in some Best Buy stores, and the company has announced that starting this Sunday it will be selling the device at <a href="http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/09/24/target_announces_it_will_sell_apples_ipad_starting_in_oct_3.html">all of its U.S. stores</a>. (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys">WMT</a>) is also rumored to begin selling iPads in stores soon.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/24/target-to-begin-selling-ipads/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Target to Begin Selling iPads</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/24/target-to-begin-selling-ipads/">Target to Begin Selling iPads</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 24 Sep 2010 16:40:00 EST.
