Best Buy (BBY) clerk steals $13,000 in store gift cards

Although Best Buy, Inc. (NYSE: BBY) has been in a whirlwind of good news in recent weeks, this one's not so glamorous. A sales clerk at the nation's largest consumer electronics retail chain was arrested recently for using fraudulent credit cards to purchase over $13,000 in legitimate gift cards. The credit cards were actually obtained from another party, but using them to buy gift cards constituted third-degree larceny. Doh!

This was all perpetrated by an 18-year-old Best Buy employee in New York. Apparently, Olivia Bailey purchased the gift cards using stolen credit card information on seven different occasions that started on July 19th of this year until this week, when she was arrested after a loss prevention officer at the store where she worked notified authorities of the theft of credit card numbers that were used for buying the gift cards.

There was no word yet on whether the gift cards were used to make physical purchases at any local Best Buy locations. Note to Best Buy: if this incident involved stolen credit card numbers instead of stolen physical credit cards, are there security policies in place to catch the use of just numbers at checkout lines in stores? Are "card swipes" and ID checks even required when any and all credit card transactions occur? Perhaps not.
