(<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/news-corporation/nws/nas">NWS</a>), and others, saw its stock sold off during Wednesday's market session. Wall Street was not excited by the latest earnings data. But does this mean the company should now be considered a pariah?</p>
<p>The stock closed yesterday at $41.38. This represented a decline of 98 cents, or 2.3%. The shares hit an intraday low of $40.07. Talk about pessimistic. Then again, maybe the pessimism will turn out to be short-term in nature. After all, the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/dreamworks-animation-skg-inc/dwa/nas/tech-chart">one-year chart</a> reflects a bullish tone.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/29/dreamworks-animation-earnings/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DreamWorks Animation: Did It Deserve Wednesday's Selling Pressure?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/29/dreamworks-animation-earnings/">DreamWorks Animation: Did It Deserve Wednesday's Selling Pressure?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 29 Apr 2010 10:00:00 EST. To be honest, I didn't think Sony's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/sony-corporation/sne/nys">SNE</a>) <em>Dear John</em> would be the one to do it.</p>
<p>According to <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/">Box Office Mojo</a>, <em>John</em> grossed roughly $32 million at domestic theaters. That was more than enough to put the sci-fi flick in second place. However, no one should feel sad for News Corp.; <em>Avatar</em>'s worldwide haul now stands at over <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=avatar.htm">$2.2 billion</a>.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/08/should-avatar-be-rushed-to-dvd-now-that-it-is-in-second-place/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Should 'Avatar' Be Rushed to DVD Now That It Is in Second Place?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/08/should-avatar-be-rushed-to-dvd-now-that-it-is-in-second-place/">Should 'Avatar' Be Rushed to DVD Now That It Is in Second Place?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 08 Feb 2010 16:00:00 EST. Probably not. By now, we're all used to seeing News Corp.s (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/news-corporation/nws/nas">NWS</a>) <em>Avatar</em> take the top spot. And for those keeping score, this is the seventh victory in a row for James Cameron (who, by the way, <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/31/entrepreneurs-journal-business-lessons-from-avatars-james-cam/">may offer lessons for entrepreneurs</a>, according to Tom Taulli).</p>
<p>According to early estimates from <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/">Box Office Mojo</a>, <em>Avatar</em> made another $30 million at domestic theaters over the past three days. At the time of this writing, the worldwide gross was just under $2 billion (it will definitely go over $2 billion, don't worry). Time Warner's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/time-warner-inc/twx/nys">TWX</a>) <em>Edge of Darkness</em>, starring the aforementioned Gibson, wasn't even close to a challenge for the 3-D aliens. Give it some credit, though: It came in second with $17 million.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/01/news-corp-s-avatar-isnt-ready-to-step-down/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>News Corp.'s 'Avatar' Isn't Ready to Step Down</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/01/news-corp-s-avatar-isnt-ready-to-step-down/">News Corp.'s 'Avatar' Isn't Ready to Step Down</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 01 Feb 2010 08:30:00 EST. In the end, it failed. James Cameron has produced a hit that will simply not be stopped. At the time of this writing, early estimates from <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/">Box Office Mojo</a> credited the picture with capturing another $41 million over the past weekend at domestic theaters. <em>Avatar</em> is closing in on $500 million, an accomplishment which makes you wonder if this is the wintertime or the summertime.</p>
<p><em>Eli</em> came in second with $31 million. A reasonably good start for Time Warner considering the power of News Corp.'s new <em>Titanic</em>; word of mouth is now key to propelling the apocalyptic project into solid blockbuster status. The film reportedly has a budget of <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=bookofeli.htm">$80 million</a> attached to it, so hopefully the worldwide gross will be stellar even if the domestic take falters.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/18/time-warners-eli-not-holy-enough-to-defeat-news-corp-s-avat/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Time Warner's 'Eli' Not Holy Enough to Defeat News Corp.'s 'Avatar'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/18/time-warners-eli-not-holy-enough-to-defeat-news-corp-s-avat/">Time Warner's 'Eli' Not Holy Enough to Defeat News Corp.'s 'Avatar'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 18 Jan 2010 11:00:00 EST. James Cameron's epic 3D picture grossed $48 million at domestic theaters over the weekend, as of early estimates from <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?view=main&amp;yr=2010&amp;wknd=02&amp;p=.htm">Box Office Mojo</a>. This puts the grand total at almost $430 million (worldwide, <em>Avatar</em> has made well over a billion bucks). Amazing for this time of year.</p>
<p>News Corp. is also counting its money from <em>Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel</em>, which is ranked in third place at the time of this writing; its total gross now stands at roughly $178 million. Coming in second is Time Warner's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/time-warner-inc/twx/nys">TWX</a>) <em>Sherlock Holmes</em> action adventure. It's possible <em>Holmes</em> and <em>Squeakquel</em> could change places once final numbers are released, since both are credited with similar weekend amounts. Nevertheless, <em>Holmes</em> has now raked in about $165 million.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/11/news-corp-s-avatar-refuses-to-yield-top-spot/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>News Corp.'s Avatar Refuses to Yield Top Spot</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/11/news-corp-s-avatar-refuses-to-yield-top-spot/">News Corp.'s Avatar Refuses to Yield Top Spot</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 11 Jan 2010 08:00:00 EST. Although I have no interest in seeing it, I undoubtedly must be one of the only people on the planet who lacks the need to become immersed in the 3-D adventure. According to early estimates at <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?yr=2010&amp;wknd=01&amp;p=.htm">Box Office Mojo</a>, James Cameron's "titanic" cinematic beast scored another $68 million at domestic theaters over the New Year's weekend. Total so far: better than $350 million.</p>
<p>Time Warner's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/time-warner-inc/twx/nys">TWX</a>) take on a famous literary detective had to settle for second place yet again. <em>Sherlock Holmes</em> pulled in $38 million. Coming in third was the <em>Alvin and the Chipmunks</em> sequel, also released by News Corp. Indeed, there's no shortage of excitement at the multiplex.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/04/should-studios-adopt-the-james-cameron-model-of-moviemaking/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Should Studios Adopt the James Cameron Model of Moviemaking?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/04/should-studios-adopt-the-james-cameron-model-of-moviemaking/">Should Studios Adopt the James Cameron Model of Moviemaking?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 04 Jan 2010 11:00:00 EST. It could even end up being the top studio, although there is currently some ambiguity on that count. This article over at <em><a href="http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118013147.html?categoryid=3762&amp;cs=1&amp;nid=2562">Variety</a></em> says that News Corp. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/news-corporation/nws/nas">NWS</a>) might come out ahead once all is said and done.</p>
<p>Nevertheless, according to <a href="http://insidemovies.moviefone.com/2009/12/29/warner-bros-sets-new-world-wide%20box-office-record/">Moviefone</a>, Time Warner's movie operations captured an estimated $3.99 billion at multiplexes around the globe. Yes, it's an impressive feat, and it was done with the help of a major franchise. <em>Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince</em> grossed well over $900 million on a worldwide basis. Even more amazing was the performance of surprise comedy hit <em>The Hangover</em>. And to think, that one had an R rating, something that tends to limit the potential for big success. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/31/thoughts-on-time-warners-2009-box-office-performance/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Thoughts on Time Warner's 2009 Box Office Performance</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/31/thoughts-on-time-warners-2009-box-office-performance/">Thoughts on Time Warner's 2009 Box Office Performance</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 31 Dec 2009 17:00:00 EST. <p>James Cameron's <em>Avatar</em> topped the charts at domestic theaters, pulling in an estimated $75 million, according to <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/">Box Office Mojo</a>. If the project can continue to attract moviegoers in large droves, as well as propagate a lot of repeat business, then it should break even before it hits other distribution channels. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/28/news-corp-s-avatar-and-alvin-and-the-chipmunks-had-a-great/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>News Corp.'s 'Avatar' and 'Alvin and the Chipmunks' Had a Great Weekend</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/28/news-corp-s-avatar-and-alvin-and-the-chipmunks-had-a-great/">News Corp.'s 'Avatar' and 'Alvin and the Chipmunks' Had a Great Weekend</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 28 Dec 2009 10:50:00 EST. The media company's new film, <em>The Blind Side</em>, beat the latest <em>Twilight</em> picture. No, it won't make the stock go up, but I'm sure studio execs were excited by the fact that <em>Blind Side</em> held up well during its second weekend out in the marketplace. </p>
<p>According to early estimates over at <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/">Box Office Mojo</a>, <em>Blind Side</em> grossed $20 million at domestic theaters while <em>The Twilight Saga: New Moon</em>, distributed by Summit Entertainment, made roughly $15 million. Obviously Time Warner benefited from the satiation of demand on <em>New Moon,</em> which has so far taken in over $250 million. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/07/time-warner-beats-twilight-while-lions-gate-is-on-a-wild-ride/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Time Warner beats 'Twilight' while Lions Gate is on a wild ride </em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/07/time-warner-beats-twilight-while-lions-gate-is-on-a-wild-ride/">Time Warner beats 'Twilight' while Lions Gate is on a wild ride </a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 07 Dec 2009 08:40:00 EST. We now have the answer: a real, real lot. </p>
<p>According to early estimates at <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?yr=2009&amp;wknd=47&amp;p=.htm">Box Office Mojo</a>, <em>New Moon</em> made $140 million at domestic theaters. To put this in perspective, this means that the vampire flick now occupies the third spot on the chart of <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/weekends/">best opening weekends</a> (behind <em>Dark Knight</em> and <em>Spiderman 3</em>). Truly impressive, especially when you consider that we're not in the summertime. </p>

As a shareholder of the Mouse, I remain dissatisfied with the performance. However, this past weekend's theatrical take of the film makes me a little happier. </p>
<p>According to early estimates at <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/">Box Office Mojo</a>, <em>Carol</em> scored about $22 million at domestic theaters, making it the second most popular film of the three-day period. Sure, it wasn't number one, but given the fact that <em>Carol</em> made $30 million last weekend, I'd say you have to give it some credit for avoiding a significant percentage drop. So far, it has generated more than $60 million in revenue. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/16/disneys-a-christmas-carol-didnt-die-off-in-second-weekend/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Disney's 'A Christmas Carol' didn't die off in second weekend</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/16/disneys-a-christmas-carol-didnt-die-off-in-second-weekend/">Disney's 'A Christmas Carol' didn't die off in second weekend</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 16 Nov 2009 08:20:00 EST. <p>When I discussed Lions Gate Entertainment's (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/lions-gate-entertainment-corp/lgf/nys">LGF</a>) first-quarter results, I noted the <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/08/11/lionsgate-reports-q1-profit-smashing-estimates/">disappointing statement of cash flows</a>. Unfortunately, the company didn't do much better in the <a href="http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/lionsgate-reports-net-income-of-317-million-and-adjusted-ebitda-of-544-million-for-second-quarter-of-fiscal-2010-compared-to-net-loss-of-518-million-and-adjusted-ebitda-of-negative-359-million-in-prior-years-second-quart-69595237.html">second quarter</a>. For the six-month period, Lions Gate used over $160 million for operations compared to the roughly $40 million used in the similar frame one year ago.</p>
<p>Of course, cash flow doesn't always get the most coverage. Investors tend to get more excited by a swing to profitability. On that count, Lions Gate scored admirably, earning 26 cents per diluted share versus losing 44 cents per diluted share twelve months prior. <a href="http://www.earnings.com/company.asp?client=cb&amp;ticker=lgf">Earnings.com</a> indicates that analysts were really underestimating the Q2 income potential here: the call was for 6 cents per share. </p>

Unfortunately, the film's first weekend at the box office was nothing short of a disaster.</p>
<p>Too strong? Hardly. According to early estimates at <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?yr=2009&amp;wknd=45&amp;p=.htm">Box Office Mojo</a>, <em>Carol</em> took in little more than $30 million at domestic screenings. It was wasn't supposed to be like this. <em>Carol</em> was supposed to be light-years ahead of the competition. Sony's (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/sony-corporation/sne/nys">SNE</a>) <em>Michael Jackson's This Is It</em> came in second. <em>The Men Who Stare at Goats</em>, distributed by Liberty Capital Group's (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/liberty-media-corporation-capital-common-series-a/lcapa/nas">LCAPA</a>) Overture Films, was third. And <em>The Fourth Kind</em>, from General Electric's (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/general-electric-company/ge/nys">GE</a>) Universal, is currently ranked, aptly enough, in fourth place. Each of the latter three pictures had a gross of somewhere between $12 million and $14 million. To me, <em>Carol</em>'s take didn't seem as disproportionate as it should have been.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/09/disneys-a-christmas-carol-investors-not-in-a-merry-mood/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Disney's 'A Christmas Carol': Investors not in a merry mood?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/09/disneys-a-christmas-carol-investors-not-in-a-merry-mood/">Disney's 'A Christmas Carol': Investors not in a merry mood?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 09 Nov 2009 09:30:00 EST. And how fitting it was that the man who gave us the <em>Thriller </em>masterpiece saw victory during a weekend devoted to all things Halloween. </p>
<p>According to early estimates at <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/">Box Office Mojo</a>, <em>Michael Jackson's This Is It</em>, distributed by <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/sony-corporation/sne/nys">Sony</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/sony-corporation/sne/nys">SNE</a>), grossed about $21 million at domestic theaters, good for the top slot. The total tally for the film is over $32 million once the Wednesday opening is taken into account. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/02/michael-jackson-wins-halloween-box-office-race-saw-vi-continu/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Michael Jackson wins Halloween box office race, 'Saw VI' continues to suffer</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/02/michael-jackson-wins-halloween-box-office-race-saw-vi-continu/">Michael Jackson wins Halloween box office race, 'Saw VI' continues to suffer</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 02 Nov 2009 09:20:00 EST. I never thought it could happen. <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/lions-gate-entertainment-corp/lgf/nys">Lions Gate Entertainment</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/lions-gate-entertainment-corp/lgf/nys">LGF</a>) released <em>Saw VI</em> this past weekend. Surely the latest cinematic celebration of cruelty would be the number-one picture at domestic theaters, right? <em>Saw</em> is a big brand when it comes to torture movies. Jigsaw is a Freddy Krueger (and beyond) for the new generation. The teens would be out in full force to support all the latest traps and sequences of dismemberment and bloodletting for sure. </p>
<p>Well, <em>Saw VI</em> didn't come out on top. Instead, <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/viacom-inc-new/via/nys">Viacom</a>'s (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/viacom-inc-new/via/nys">VIA</a>) <em>Paranormal Activity</em> made the most money in the race for domination at the multiplex, scoring approximately $22 million according to early estimates from <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/#">Box Office Mojo</a>. The new <em>Saw</em> did come in second, though, so that was at least some consolation, correct?</p>

The film grossed well over $30 million. Coming in second was <em>Law Abiding Citizen</em>. If <em>Wild Things</em> wasn't in the market this weekend, that one definitely would have been tops at the multiplex. This past weekend, though, the company's new comedy made waves at the box office. </p>
<p>According to <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/">Box Office Mojo</a>, Universal's <em>Couples Retreat</em>, starring Vince Vaughn, took in about $35 million at domestic theaters as of early estimates, more than enough to capture the top slot. <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/sony-corporation/sne/nys">Sony</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/sony-corporation/sne/nys">SNE</a>) took the next two spots on the chart with <em>Zombieland</em>, and the resilient cartoon <em>Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs</em>, respectively. Yep, the walking dead, made popular by George Romero so many years ago, were feasting in darkened theaters across the country. According to <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/">Box Office Mojo</a> estimates available at the time of this writing, <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/sony-corporation/sne/nys">Sony</a>'s (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/sony-corporation/sne/nys">SNE</a>) <em>Zombieland</em> made the most money at domestic theaters over the past weekend, taking in $25 million.</p>
<p>Sony also captured second place with its computer cartoon, <em>Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs</em>. That film is on its way to a total haul of over $100 million. At the moment, it has better than $80 million in the bank. Shareholders of <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-walt-disney-company/dis/nys">Disney</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-walt-disney-company/dis/nys">DIS</a>), however, had their own computer cartoons in the marketplace as well. The double feature of Pixar's <em>Toy Story</em> and <em>Toy Story 2</em> came in third with $12 million. To be honest, I thought the idea of running those two back-to-back would be too much to take for the attention spans of the younger crowd. I know it would be way too much for <em>me</em> to take. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/10/05/sonys-zombies-consume-competition-at-box-office/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Sony's zombies consume competition at box office</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/10/05/sonys-zombies-consume-competition-at-box-office/">Sony's zombies consume competition at box office</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 05 Oct 2009 08:30:00 EST. <p>Goldman Sachs believes that the company should see a lot of prosperity in the next six months. The stock might even rise as high as $45 per share, if the price target is to be believed. The premium attached to 3-D movie tickets is part of the thesis here. As well as something else, something a lot more powerful: the franchise value of <em>Shrek</em>. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/10/02/dreamworks-animation-ready-to-rise/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DreamWorks Animation ready to rise?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/10/02/dreamworks-animation-ready-to-rise/">DreamWorks Animation ready to rise?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 02 Oct 2009 15:40:00 EST. As far as I can tell, this initiative is a smart marketing move. Disney is able to promote a lot of its content in a very targeted fashion.
<p>Of particular interest is one piece of content that was highlighted in an article at the <em><a href="http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-ct-disney11-2009sep11,0,1299360,full.story">Los Angeles Times</a></em> website. Instead, it's animated in a 2-D environment. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/09/11/disney-promotes-its-content-with-new-convention/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Disney promotes its content with new convention</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/09/11/disney-promotes-its-content-with-new-convention/">Disney promotes its content with new convention</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 11 Sep 2009 15:00:00 EST.
