  • The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs has decided to sharply limit the use of GlaxoSmithKline's (NYSE: GSK) once-popular drug for Type 2 diabetes, Avandia. The decision is likely to further reduce revenue from Avandia, whose sales have dropped in the U.S. by an estimated 60% in the last five months, reported the New York Times.
  • Goldman Sachs Group (NYSE: GS) said it would pay $172M for a majority stake in Indian metal castings maker Sigma Electricals and its affiliated companies, reported the Business Standard.
  • A molecular diagnostic test for HPV developed by Digene, which is now part of Qiagen (NASDAQ: QGEN), has been found to be almost 40% more accurate than traditional cytology in identifying women with advanced cervical disease, according to a report published today in The New England Journal of Medicine.

Newspaper wrap-up 6-25-07: eBay takes Google's AdWords back

  • The Wall Street Journal (subscription required) reported that online auctioneer eBay Inc (NASDAQ: EBAY) has resumed advertising with Google Inc (NASDAQ: GOOG), after having pulled its ads to prove that it didn't need to spend as heavily on Google's AdWords.
  • The Financial Times reported that some inside and outside of Lazard Ltd (NYSE: LAZ) are questioning if CEO Bruce Wassertein has given the company a sustainable model that will be able to thrive without the current "dealmaking binge."
  • According to the Financial Times, citing people familiar with the situation, News Corporation's (NYSE: NWS) Rupert Murdoch is looking beyond its $5B offer for Dow Jones and Company Inc (NYSE: DJ) in search of Internet acquisitions or a deal involving MySpace.

  • According to the Wall Street Journal (subscription required), citing people familiar with the matter, Community Health Systems Inc (NYSE: CYH) is near a deal to purchase Triad Hospitals (NYSE: TRI), which would break up an existing $4.5B private-equity buyout plan.
  • The Wall Street Journal's "Heard on the Street" column reported that rumors are swirling that Infineon Technologies ADS (NYSE: IFX) will be chosen to supply the main chip to drive the upcoming iPhone from Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL).

  • According to Google Inc's (NASDAQ: GOOG) official blog, it has acquired Adscape media. Terms were not disclosed.

  • The Financial Times (subscription required) reported that General Electric Company (NYSE: GE) is expected to buy a 95% stake in Idex Aquaservices.

  • The Economic Times reported that Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ) has formed a partnership with India's Videocom.
  • According to the U.K. Times, Nelson Peltz is in the running for Ford Motor Company's (NYSE: F) Aston Martin.
  • The Business-Standard wrote that Goldman Sachs Group (NYSE: GS) plans to buy a stake in India's MCX.
