Analyst upgrades:

  • Jefferies upgraded Biogen (NASDAQ: BIIB) to Buy from Hold based on valuation. The firm, which has a $50 target on the stock, believes Tysabri PML cases are reflected in shares.
  • Deutsche Bank upgraded Nordstrom (NYSE: JWN) to Buy from Hold as it finds the valuation attractive and believes the company's sales are benefiting from stabilization in California and share gains. Deutsche raised its target on shares to $45 from $36.
  • RBC Capital upgraded Yum! Brands (NYSE: YUM) to Outperform from Sector Perform and raised its target to $39 from $36 citing valuation and views it as a low risk option on a global economic recovery.
  • Credit Suisse (NYSE: CS) was upgraded to Buy from Hold at Citigroup.
  • Royal Caribbean (NYSE: RCL) was upgraded to Outperform from Market Perform at Wells Fargo.
  • Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) was upgraded to Hold from Sell at RBS.

Analyst upgrades:
  • Deutsche Bank upgraded shares of UBS (NYSE: UBS) to Buy from Hold following the company's Q3 update as they believe the quarter marks a turning point.
  • Merill raised BP Plc (NYSE: BP) and Total SA (NYSE: TOT) to Neutral from Underperform.
  • DISH Network (NASDAQ: DISH) was lifted to Hold from Sell at Soleil.
  • Friedman Billings upgraded Sovereign Bancorp (NYSE: SOV) to Market Perform from Underperform as they believe the company's deposits are showing stability despite the massive sell-off.
  • Kaufman Bros. raised Longtop Financial (NYSE: LFT) to Buy from Hold on valuation as they believe Chinese software service stocks now reflect the investment risks.
  • Lear (NYSE: LEA) was upgraded to Hold from Sell at Citigroup.
Analyst downgrades:
  • Morgan Stanley downgraded eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY) to Equal Weight from Overweight citing checks that indicate deteriorating trends are worst than expected.

Analyst initiations: TSS, CPLP and AHT

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Total Systems, Capital Products Partners and Ashford Hospitality were today's noteworthy initiations:
  • Stephens initiated Total Systems (NYSE: TSS) with an Overweight rating and $28 target. The firm thinks investor concerns about the negative impact of economic weakness are overdone.
  • JP Morgan believes Capital Products' (NASDAQ: CPLP) fixed-rate contract coverage and fixed operating costs should provide stable cash distributions to unit holders. The firm assumed coverage with an Overweight rating.
  • Ashford Hospitality (NYSE: AHT) was initiated at UBS with a Buy rating and $7 target.
OTHER INITIATIONS:
  • Bank of Kentucky (OTC: BKYF) was initiated with an Outperform rating and $29 target at Baird.
  • Morgan Stanley initiated Longs Drug Stores (NYSE: LDG) with an Equal Weight rating.

Analyst upgrades: PCOP, ZUMZ, NSC and OCCX

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Pharmacopeia, Zumiez, Norfolk Southern and OccuLogix were today's noteworthy upgrades:
  • CIBC upgraded Pharmacopeia (NASDAQ: PCOP) to Sector Outperformer from Sector Performer, as they believe its lead cardiovascular drug DARA has the potential to become an important new therapy for hypertension and diabetic nephropathy.
  • Think Equity upgraded shares of Zumiez (NASDAQ: ZUMZ) to Buy from Accumulate to reflect the company's strong same store sales growth.
  • Norfolk Southern Corporation (NYSE: NSC) was upgraded to Equal Weight from Underweight at Lehman Brothers on valuation.
  • Caris upgraded shares of OccuLogix (NASDAQ: OCCX) to Above Average from Average, as they believe weakness in the stock creates a buying opportunity. The firm believes the stock has dropped due to concerns about the company's cash position, but thinks the current stock price underestimates the revenue potential of the company's assets.
OTHER UPGRADES:

Analyst initiations 9-6-07: MSFT, CRM, TLEO and MFE

MOST NOTEWORTHY: European pharmaceuticals, Microsoft, Salesforce.com, Taleo and McAfee were today's noteworthy initiations:
  • UBS resumed coverage of Novartis AG (NYSE: NVS) with a Buy rating and AstraZeneca (NYSE: AZN), Roche Holding (OTC: RHHBY), Sanofi-Aventis (NYSE: SNY) and GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE: GSK) with Neutral ratings.
  • Deutsche Bank believes new product leverage can bring upside to consensus operating margin expectations at Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) and they view shares as attractively valued given its growth profile. The firm started shares with a Buy rating and $33 target.
  • Keybanc initiated shares of Salesforce.com (NYSE: CRM) with a Hold rating and sees slowing growth rates for revenue and net subscriber additions throughout the remainder of FY08 and beyond and thinks investor expectations are too high.
  • Keybanc also started shares of Taleo Corporation (NASDAQ: TLEO) with a Buy rating and $27 target, as it is well-positioned to gain market share in the Human Capital Management space.
  • Thomas Weisel believes McAfee Inc (NYSE: MFE) will benefit from PC market growth, enhanced awareness of the company's brand, and its renewed focus on product development for the midmarket corporate segment, and started shares with a Market Weight rating and $37 target.

Analyst initiations 5-09-07: ADBE, ADSK, DAL and DSX

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Delta Air Lines (DAL), Diana Shipping Inc (DSX), Adobe Systems Inc (ADBE), Eagle Materials, Inc (EXP), ACR Group (BRR) and Autodesk, Inc (ADSK) were today's noteworthy initiations:
  • Goldman is positive on Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL), starting shares with a Buy rating and $25 target based on above average growth, best-in-class unit costs, free cash flow and less labor cost risk.
  • Diana Shipping (NYSE: DSX) was started at JP Morgan with an Overweight rating based on valuation and positioning. Lazard started Diana with a Buy rating, expecting demand for dry bulk shipping will outperform supply through 2010.
  • Soleil expects Adobe Systems (NASDAQ: ADBE) recently released Creative Suite 3 to be the near-and-medium term growth driver and started shares with a Buy rating.
  • JP Morgan started Eagle Materials Inc (NYSE: EXP) with an Underweight rating, expecting a decline in wallboard industry profitability due to increased capacity and lower demand.
  • B. Riley started ACR Group (AMEX: BRR) with a Buy rating calling the stock "cheap."
  • Soleil believes a catch up on the Autodesk's (NASDAQ: ADSK) SEC filings and a strong Q1 will prove near-term catalysts and started shares off with a Buy rating and $56 target.
OTHER INITIATIONS:
  • Banc of American started Verigy Ltd (NASDAQ: VRGY) with a Buy rating and $32 target.
  • Stephens initiated Kaman Corp (NASDAQ: KAMN) with an Overweight rating and $34 target.
