While
General Motors (NYSE:
GM) and Chrysler are clinging to the life raft of government cheese and new car dealers around the country are closing shop,
America's Car-Mart (NASDAQ:
CRMT) is doing a pretty brisk business.
The company reported its third quarter results this morning and they were pretty solid: an 8% increase in net income, a decrease in the company's debt load, and same-store sales growth of 2.9%. In a
press release, CEO Hank Henderson commented that "Throughout the quarter we carried a slightly larger percentage of higher-cost vehicles in an effort to better attract those folks who are now 'buy-here-pay-here' customers as a result of recent credit tightening. We were able to maintain the positive sales momentum that began well over a year ago. In fact, for the nine-month period, unit sales are up strongly at 7.7%, revenues are up 11.6% and same store revenue growth is up 11.2%."

While the release of economic data doesn't stop next week (see economic schedule highlights below), the earnings season does wind down dramatically. Most of the S&P 500 companies already have reported on the past quarter, which means dismal earnings news is largely behind us, at least for a while. About the only companies of note expected by analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters to report falling earnings this week are Costco Wholesale Corp. (NASDAQ: COST), Wendy's/Arby's Group Inc. (NYSE: WEN), Foot Locker Inc. (NYSE: FL), Bank of Montreal (NYSE: BMO), and Steinway Musical Instruments Inc. (NYSE: LVB).
While PetSmart Inc. (NASDAQ: PETM) and Big Lots Inc. (NYSE: BIG) quarterly profits are expected to be about the same as a year ago, Liz Claiborne Inc. (NYSE: LIZ), Kenneth Cole Productions Inc. (NYSE: KCP), Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ: CIEN), and Trina Solar Ltd. (NYSE: TSL) are expected to have swung to losses in the most recent quarter.

While the earnings crunch for this quarter is all but over, there is still plenty of action in the earnings arena this coming week. For instance, analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial are expecting America's Car Mart Inc. (NASDAQ: CRMT) and Campbell Soup Co. (NYSE: CPB) to be among this week's top earnings gainers.
Bentonville, Ark.-based America's Car Mart is expected to post net income of 38 cents per share (up 52.6% from the same period a year ago) on revenue of $73.8 million (up 25.8%). The used car dealer chain has tended in recent quarters toward positive surprises -- by 21 cents per share, or 73.5%, in the previous quarter. The long-term EPS growth forecast is 15%, about the same as the S&P 500. The consensus recommendation of analysts is to buy CRMT.
Campell is tentatively scheduled to report this week, and the world's biggest soup maker is expected to post net income of 25 cents per share (up 44.0% from a year ago) on revenue of $1.7 billion (up 7.5%). The Camden, N.J.-based company has just missed earnings estimates in the past three quarters. Its long-term EPS growth forecast is 7.5%, which is less than the industry average, but about the same as rivals Kraft Foods (NYSE: KFT) and Heinz (NYSE: HNZ). The analysts' consensus recommendation is currently to buy Campbell.
Other anticipated double-digit earnings gainers scheduled to report this week include brand name apparel maker Guess Inc. (NYSE: GES), mining equipment maker Joy Global (NASDAQ: JOYG), and chip maker National Semiconductor (NYSE: NSM). And Take-Two Interactive Software (NASDAQ: TTWO) is expected to swing to a profit.

America's Car-Mart (NASDAQ: CRMT) operates
91 automotive dealerships, located primarily in the smaller urban markets of eight South-Central states. The dealerships focus on selling and providing the financing for basic, affordable cars, trucks and sport utility vehicles. Competitors include AutoNation (NYSE: AN) and CarMax (NYSE: KMX).
The company pleased investors late last month, when it reported fiscal Q4 EPS of 47 cents and revenues of $76.5 million. Analysts had been looking for 29 cents and $69.2 million. The firm said it was seeing increased traffic at its dealerships, as the cost of living rose. CL King subsequently upgraded CRMT shares from "accumulate" to "strong buy", noting management's improved execution in sales, underwriting, collections and purchasing. The company was expected to do well, in the current economic environment.

Headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas, world capital of Wal-Mart,
America's Car-Mart Incorporated (NASDAQ:
CRMT) has taken a page from master marketer Sam Walton.
America's Car-Mart will make it possible for just about anyone with weak or limited credit history to purchase a basic, reliable used car. No money for the down payment? No problem. America's Car-Mart will accept anything of value, including furniture, electronics and even livestock, as part of the down payment. This approach seems to be working. At a time when
Car-Max (NYSE:
KMX) posted a 55% drop in earnings, America's Car-Mart posted
4Q 2008 revenue gain of 29% to $76.5 million. Gross margins are up, past due accounts are down (surprising in a tight rural economy), net income is way up, and the company's debt level is down. Retail sales by unit volume increased 25% despite the fact the company closed three underperforming dealerships in the quarter. The average retail sales price increased 7% and the company has worked hard to improve the quality of the used vehicles in its inventory.
These good numbers are not just a fluke for 4Q 2008. FY 2008 revenues are up 14% to $275 million. Net income totaled $15 million or $1.26 per diluted share. The company has invested in software to track loan delinquencies and has developed its own proprietary credit scoring method to serve its non-traditional client base. Investors are happy with the news. They bid the stock up more than 5% to close at $18.86, closing in on the stock's 52 week high.
