It is important to remember that a stock screener is just a tool and every investment should be analyzed on its own merits to make sure it fits with your personal portfolio and risk characteristics. My weekly column finds interesting investment opportunities with the help of our <a href="http://money.aol.com/investing/stockscreener">Stock Screener</a>.</em><br /><br />Since two of the stocks I covered in the <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/category/stock-screen/">Stock Screener</a> section had such wild movements in such a short time, I've decided to quickly take a look at all the stocks I've covered here, see what major news recently affected them and how they reacted. All returns are as of May 2nd close.<br /><br /><strong>Solar Energy Stocks</strong> <br /><br />On March 27th, I went over some <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/03/27/stock-screener-generating-power-with-batteries-and-solar-energy/">solar energy stocks</a>. I looked at <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/trina-solar-ltd-adr/TSL/NYS">Trina Solar Ltd.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/trina-solar-ltd-adr/TSL/NYS">TSL</a>) and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/suntech-power-holdings-co-ltd/STP/NYS">Suntech Power Holdings Co., Ltd.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/suntech-power-holdings-co-ltd/STP/NYS">STP</a>), concluding with: "I think it may not be too late to jump on the Trina bandwagon. Suntech could prove a long-term solid player as well."
<ul> </ul>
Since then, TSL returned over 24% and STP returned 5.8%.<br />The main catalyst in the solar energy stock was a <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/04/04/solar-energy-stocks-see-sun-rising/">court ruling</a> that could pave the way to more regulations and have a positive impact on alternative energy stocks.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/05/03/stock-screener-one-month-later-tsl-up-24-liz-down-20/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Stock Screener one month later: TSL up 24%, LIZ down 20%</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/05/03/stock-screener-one-month-later-tsl-up-24-liz-down-20/">Stock Screener one month later: TSL up 24%, LIZ down 20%</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 03 May 2007 21:36:00 EST. I originally had my mind set on the <a href="http://finance.aol.com/usw/quotes/stockscreener?btnOK=Search&amp;c_i=Cosmetics+%26+Skin+Care&amp;c_p=Any&amp;c_p_f=&amp;c_p_t=&amp;c_pct=Any&amp;c_pct_f=&amp;c_pct_t=&amp;c_av=Any&amp;c_av_f=&amp;c_av_t=&amp;c_iv=Any&amp;c_iv_f=&amp;c_iv_t=&amp;c_mc=Any&amp;c_mc_f=&amp;c_mc_t=&amp;prof_pys=Any&amp;prof_pys_f=&amp;prof_pys_t=&amp;prof_1ysg=Any&amp;prof_1ysg_f=&amp;prof_1ysg_t=&amp;prof_pyni=Any&amp;prof_pyni_f=&amp;prof_pyni_t=&amp;f_per=Any&amp;f_per_f=&amp;f_per_t=&amp;f_ps=Any&amp;f_ps_f=&amp;f_ps_t=&amp;f_pb=Any&amp;f_pb_f=&amp;f_pb_t=&amp;f_pm=Any&amp;f_pm_f=&amp;f_pm_t=&amp;f_ld=Any&amp;f_ld_f=&amp;f_ld_t=&amp;f_idr=Any&amp;f_idr_f=&amp;f_idr_t=&amp;f_y=Any&amp;f_y_f=&amp;f_y_t=&amp;perf_eps=Any&amp;perf_eps_f=&amp;perf_eps_t=&amp;perf_lqe=Any&amp;perf_lqe_f=&amp;perf_lqe_t=&amp;perf_cqe=Any&amp;perf_cqe_f=&amp;perf_cqe_t=&amp;perf_lfye=Any&amp;perf_lfye_f=&amp;perf_lfye_t=&amp;perf_tfye=Any&amp;perf_tfye_f=&amp;perf_tfye_t=&amp;perf_ac=Any&amp;r_dv=0&amp;r_nor=20">Cosmetic &amp; Skin Care</a> industry for this week, but just above it was the <a href="http://finance.aol.com/usw/quotes/stockscreener?btnOK=Search&amp;c_i=Correctional+Institutions&amp;c_p=Any&amp;c_p_f=&amp;c_p_t=&amp;c_pct=Any&amp;c_pct_f=&amp;c_pct_t=&amp;c_av=Any&amp;c_av_f=&amp;c_av_t=&amp;c_iv=Any&amp;c_iv_f=&amp;c_iv_t=&amp;c_mc=Any&amp;c_mc_f=&amp;c_mc_t=&amp;prof_pys=Any&amp;prof_pys_f=&amp;prof_pys_t=&amp;prof_1ysg=Any&amp;prof_1ysg_f=&amp;prof_1ysg_t=&amp;prof_pyni=Any&amp;prof_pyni_f=&amp;prof_pyni_t=&amp;f_per=Any&amp;f_per_f=&amp;f_per_t=&amp;f_ps=Any&amp;f_ps_f=&amp;f_ps_t=&amp;f_pb=Any&amp;f_pb_f=&amp;f_pb_t=&amp;f_pm=Any&amp;f_pm_f=&amp;f_pm_t=&amp;f_ld=Any&amp;f_ld_f=&amp;f_ld_t=&amp;f_idr=Any&amp;f_idr_f=&amp;f_idr_t=&amp;f_y=Any&amp;f_y_f=&amp;f_y_t=&amp;perf_eps=Any&amp;perf_eps_f=&amp;perf_eps_t=&amp;perf_lqe=Any&amp;perf_lqe_f=&amp;perf_lqe_t=&amp;perf_cqe=Any&amp;perf_cqe_f=&amp;perf_cqe_t=&amp;perf_lfye=Any&amp;perf_lfye_f=&amp;perf_lfye_t=&amp;perf_tfye=Any&amp;perf_tfye_f=&amp;perf_tfye_t=&amp;perf_ac=Any&amp;r_dv=0&amp;r_nor=20">Correctional Institutions</a> industry. When prison management companies first became public I was so repulsed by the idea that I never followed up on them. Now, some ten years later, and after their performance the past year, I decided to take another look.<br /><br />The four companies in the industry (in order of market capitalization) are <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/corrections-corporation-of-america/CXW/NYS">Corrections Corporations of America</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/corrections-corporation-of-america/CXW/NYS">CXW</a>) with a $3.39 billion market cap, <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/geo-group-inc-the/GEO/NYS">The Geo Group, Inc.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/geo-group-inc-the/GEO/NYS">GEO</a>) with a market value of $1.22 billion, <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/cornell-companies-inc/CRN/NYS">Cornell Companies, Inc.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/cornell-companies-inc/CRN/NYS">CRN</a>) with a $302.52 million market cap and finally, the OTC traded (hence I won't cover it here) <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/cornell-companies-inc/CRN/NYS">Avalon Correctional Services, Inc.</a> (OTC: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/cornell-companies-inc/CRN/NYS">CITY</a>).<br /><br />Why even bother? Well, look at the year-to-date returns and decide for yourselves (the bottom, yellow line is the S&amp;P 500), the rest, going up, are Cornell, CCA and Geo.<br /><br />Better yet, one year returns are 54% for Cornell, 91% for CCA and 115% for Geo. So the question is -- have they run out of room to grow?<br /><img vspace="4" hspace="4" align="middle" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.bloggingstocks.com/media/2007/04/corrections.gif" alt="" /><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/04/24/stock-screener-corrections-not-the-market-kind-facilities/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Stock Screener: Corrections (not the market kind) facilities</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2007/04/24/stock-screener-corrections-not-the-market-kind-facilities/">Stock Screener: Corrections (not the market kind) facilities</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 24 Apr 2007 15:10:00 EST.
