Last week's preview raised the question of whether consumers were turning to comfort foods in these uncertain times, specifically in terms of second quarter earnings of Campbell Soup (NYSE: CPB) and Krispy Kreme (NYSE: KKD). Campbell's strong earnings growth topped expectations, while Krispy Kreme narrowed its loss, though it fell short of estimates.

This coming week should bring reports from more food-related companies, from cereal maker General Mills and food packager CongAgra to grocery chain Kroger, to the parent companies of restaurants Cracker Barrel, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Carl's Jr., and Hardees. Also look for reports from tech-related companies such as Oracle, Adobe, and Palm, as well as from financials Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs, and from economic bellwether FedEx.

• Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ: CIEN) up 29.7% to 37 cents per share, on $238.4 million in revenue
• Greif Inc. (NYSE: GEF) up 24.1% to 87 cents per share, on $839.9 million in revenue

• Deutsche Bank believes upside remains on Xilinx Inc's (NASDQ: XLNX) margins and tax rates, initiating shares with a Buy rating and $38 target.

• JP Morgan waits for improved new unit volumes and better earnings visibility before getting more constructive on Red Robin Gourmet Burgers Inc (NASDAQ: RRGB) and initiated shares with a Neutral rating.

• Given the lack of catalysts to improve margins above their peers, JP Morgan doesn't expect multiple expansions from Ingram Micro (NYSE: IM) in the near-term, assuming shares with a Neutral rating.

• Deutsche Bank expects Silicon Labratories (NASDAQ:: SLAB) multiples to expand with operating margins, starting shares with a Buy rating and $40 target.

• Needham believes Comtech Group Inc (NASDAQ: COGO) is uniquely leveraged to benefit from the growth of manufacturing in China and started shares with a Buy rating and $21 target...

Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) promised to invest $100 million in business ventures with Chinese software companies and it looks like the fruits of that investment are paying off. Microsoft announced new licensing agreements on three mobile phone technologies to two Chinese companies. The software involved was developed at Microsoft's Beijing research lab and developed at its facilities in China.

Microsoft licensed mobile picture-viewing and video compression technologies to Comtech, which designs cell phones, telecommunications equipment and consumer gear for both Chinese and multinational electronics makers. The other Chinese company benefiting from Microsoft's investment in China is Talkweb, which is getting licensed access to technology that people can use to upload photos to their website and create cartoons of themselves. These cartoons can then be sent to family and friends using a phone or other multimedia messaging service.

These are only the first of many deals Microsoft hopes to make in China. This licensing strategy was used successfully in Europe and the U.S. to create start-ups built around Microsoft technologies. Microsoft licenses to existing and new companies that decide to commercialize a product Microsoft does not want to take to market itself, a win-win situation.
