However the recent news in Japan following fears of a nuclear crisis gives us some concern. ConocoPhillips and competitors like Exxon Mobil Corporation (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/exxon-mobil-corporation/xom/nys">XOM</a>), BP (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/bp-p-l-c/bp/nys">BP</a>) and Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/anadarko-petroleum-corporation/apc/nys">APC</a>) and Chevron Corporation (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/chevron-corporation/cvx/nys">CVX</a>) are sensitive to changes in oil prices.</p>
<p>While we expect ConocoPhillips's price of crude oil and LNGs (per barrel) will increase to around $83 by the end of the Trefis forecast period, Trefis members forecast the price rising to $102, implying an upside of 5% to our price estimate for COP stock.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/22/high-oil-prices-to-support-conoco-shares-despite-japans-woes/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>High Oil Prices to Support Conoco Shares Despite Japan's Woes</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/22/high-oil-prices-to-support-conoco-shares-despite-japans-woes/">High Oil Prices to Support Conoco Shares Despite Japan's Woes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 22 Mar 2011 17:00:00 EST. <br />
The recent political turmoil in Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya, which is slowly spreading to other Middle Eastern and North African countries is likely to have an impact on Exxon Mobil's production capacity. This is because the company derives the majority of its revenues from production of crude oil and natural gas liquids (NGLs), and the Middle East and North Africa regions account for a sizable portion of its portfolio.

Since then the world has changed dramatically.<br />
<br />
Egypt is engulfed in a civil uprising and protesters are clamoring for President Hosni Mubarak to step down. Uncertainty is the new state of affairs. Uncertainty breeds fear and fear has taken over the energy sector.<br />
<br />
The chart guys quickly covered their shorts and now the bulls have the market. This is fundamental. Three million barrels of oil a day pass through the Suez Canal and the Sumed pipeline. You can throw the charts out the window.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/01/brent-crude-oil-holds-above-100-per-barrel/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Brent Crude Oil Holds Above $100 per Barrel</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/01/brent-crude-oil-holds-above-100-per-barrel/">Brent Crude Oil Holds Above $100 per Barrel</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 01 Feb 2011 10:00:00 EST. Starting with five major defense contractors and six major oil companies (see <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/14/chasing-value-you-must-own-defense-and-oil-for-safety/" target="_blank">Chasing Value: You Must Own Defense and Oil for Safety</a>), I began a search to find one stock in each sector that might be suitable for inclusion in my list of 2011 stock picks posted last week <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/02/chasing-value-2011-stock-picks-the-journey-begins/" title="View Chasing Value: 2011 Stock Picks -- The Journey Begins on BloggingStocks" target="_blank">Chasing Value: 2011 Stock Picks -- The Journey Begin</a>.</p>
<p>Today we continue our analysis by examining return on equity (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Return%20On%20Equity%20-%20ROE">ROE</a>), return on invested capital (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Return%20On%20Invested%20Capital%20-%20ROIC">ROIC</a>), and price-to-earnings-to-growth (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Price/Earnings%20To%20Growth%20-%20PEG%20Ratio">PEG</a>). Each stock is ranked by sector and metric from best to worst. Sometimes there are clear winners and others there is little to separate one stock from the next. However, in total, a picture can be drawn that does portray a superior opportunity.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/16/chasing-value-defense-and-oil-part-3/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chasing Value: Defense and Oil -- Part 3</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/16/chasing-value-defense-and-oil-part-3/">Chasing Value: Defense and Oil -- Part 3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 16 Dec 2010 12:20:00 EST. After the first review, one stock was eliminated from consideration: Petroleo Brasileiro (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/petroleo-brasileiro-s-a-petrobras/pbr/nys">PBR</a>). The reason is in the first story.</p>
<p>Today we continue our analysis by examining price-to-book (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Price-To-Book%20Ratio%20-%20P/B%20Ratio">P/B</a>), price-to-cash-flow (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Price-To-Cash-Flow%20Ratio">P/CF</a>), and <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Dividend%20Yield">dividend yield</a>. All of this has its limits, but, if you are a fan of Professor Nassim NicholasTaleb and his best seller <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Black_Swan_(Taleb_book)">The Black Swan</a> then you already have been warned that the events that have the greatest impact on our lives and our investments are most often unpredictable. We cannot predict the future nor can we anticipate the tragedies that will tank our portfolio's.<br />
<br />
While I do believe predicting the future is, how should I say, futile, there are general clues as to which way the wind blows.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/14/chasing-value-you-must-own-defense-and-oil-for-safety/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chasing Value: You Must Own Defense and Oil for Safety</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/14/chasing-value-you-must-own-defense-and-oil-for-safety/">Chasing Value: You Must Own Defense and Oil for Safety</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 14 Dec 2010 16:00:00 EST. Then again, maybe it's not. 24/7 Wall St. is reporting that a German company is planning to install <a href="http://247wallst.com/2010/09/27/machines-that-dispense-gold-bars-coming-to-the-us/">vending machines in the U.S. that sell gold</a>.</p>
<p>It was only yesterday that I cautioned investors about the <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/27/chasing-value-beware-of-gold-fever/">overexuberance in the gold market </a>and now that is being raised to a new level. This not only exemplifies my concerns for new investors into the precious metal, but also is strong evidence that retail investors and water-cooler chatter have pushed their way into the market. Gold being sold in vending machines by gold promoters is specifically taking advantage of the foolish retail crowd.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/28/chasing-value-fools-gold-in-vending-machines/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chasing Value: Fool's Gold in Vending Machines</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/28/chasing-value-fools-gold-in-vending-machines/">Chasing Value: Fool's Gold in Vending Machines</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 28 Sep 2010 10:30:00 EST. As a contrarian investor, I do buy on fear and sell on greed as "my pal Warren" has advised for many years. This has worked out to be very profitable over the past 18 months. However, in the past 30 days the financial stocks have dropped to second place in favor of oil and gas stocks.</p>
<p>I think the economic recovery is moving at a snail's pace, lowering anticipated demand for oil while gas was already depressed based on the same factors and the addition of numerous new large supplies. Add to this the mess in the Gulf of Mexico and the public's already negative sentiment about oil companies and you have the makings of depressed pricing in the sector.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/02/chasing-value-buffett-must-be-buying-oil/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Chasing Value: Buffett Must Be Buying Oil</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/02/chasing-value-buffett-must-be-buying-oil/">Chasing Value: Buffett Must Be Buying Oil</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 02 Aug 2010 11:00:00 EST. <br />
Any time the volatility skews above 1.00, it is an indication that calls are more expensive than puts. Typically, when calls are more expensive than puts, it means the demand for calls is greater than the demand for puts because investors believe the stock is going to rise in the future and they want to take advantage of that movement by buying calls.<br />
<br />
The opposite is also true. Any time a volatility skews below 1.00, it is an indication that puts are more expensive than calls.<br />
<br />
<strong>Bullish Volatility Skews</strong><br />
<br />
- Hudson City Bancorp, Inc. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/hudson-city-bancorp-inc/hcbk/nas" class="inlinked">HCBK</a>)---part of the Savings &amp; Loans industry---came in at the top with a volatility skew of 1.13. This may come as a surprise as HCBK is down -6.89 percent for the past month.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/15/hudson-city-tops-bullish-volatility-skews-xcel-energy-tops-bear/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hudson City Tops Bullish Volatility Skews; Xcel Energy Tops Bearish</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/15/hudson-city-tops-bullish-volatility-skews-xcel-energy-tops-bear/">Hudson City Tops Bullish Volatility Skews; Xcel Energy Tops Bearish</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 15 Jul 2010 13:30:00 EST. If you have lost equity recently and can find similarly positioned stocks, it may be wise to consider some lateral moves. Selling one stock and buying something comparable allows you to claim a loss while still remaining fully invested.<br />
<br />
In this way you do not have to observe the 30-day rule where you cannot claim a loss in a stock sold today if you buy it back until after 30 days have past. In 30 days the market opportunity to repurchase the shares of the company you sold at good price may have also past.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/03/serious-money-tax-savings-lateral-moves/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Serious Money: Tax Savings, Lateral Moves</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/03/serious-money-tax-savings-lateral-moves/">Serious Money: Tax Savings, Lateral Moves</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 03 Jun 2010 14:00:00 EST. <br />
It is sad to learn of BP's poor adherence to basic safety precautions and the conflicts between managers on the drilling rig. It appears from the news reports that have trickled out that this mess was created by more than damaged equipment and poor decisions. The actual decision-making process on the leased Transocean (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/transocean-ltd-switzerland-common-stock/rig/nys">RIG</a>) platform was faulty from the beginning. Sadly BP is not alone in this regard -- just the most recently exposed.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/02/bp-may-disappear-while-trudging-through-its-own-sludge/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>BP May Disappear While Trudging Through Its Own Sludge</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/02/bp-may-disappear-while-trudging-through-its-own-sludge/">BP May Disappear While Trudging Through Its Own Sludge</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 02 Jun 2010 10:10:00 EST.
