Newspaper wrap-up: Sources say Clear Channel deal near collapse over loan term

MAJOR PAPERS:

The Wall Street Journal said the $19B privatization of Clear Channel Communications Inc (NYSE: CCU) was near collapse as the private-equity firms behind the deal and the banks financing it failed to resolve their differences over terms of the credit agreement, people familiar with the matter said.
Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ: CMCSA) and Time Warner Inc (NYSE: TWX) are in talks to fund a new nationwide wireless company that would be operated by Sprint Nextel Corporation (NYSE: S) and Clearwire Corporation (NASDAQ: CLWR), and use WiMax technology, reported the Wall Street Journal. Intel Corporation (NASDAQ: INTC) and Google Inc (NASDAQ: GOOG) may also help with funding.
The Wall Street Journal also reported federal regulators are handing out warnings to banks due to their exposure to development loans and commercial real-estate construction. Sources believe Corus Bankshares Incorporated (NASDAQ: CORS) is facing trouble in the near future due to increasing scrutiny by regulators and the fact that much of the fallout in the condo sector has yet to be felt by banks.
Some banks in the government-sponsored Federal Home Loan Banking system want to guarantee municipal infrastructure projects, the Financial Times reported, thus fulfilling the role traditionally taken by monoline insurance groups such as MBIA Inc(NYSE: MBI).

MAJOR PAPERS:

A full page advertisement by CVS Corporation (NYSE: CVS) in this morning's Wall Street Journal (subscription required) warned Caremark Rx Inc (NYSE: CMX) shareholders that their "[investments] would be at risk" under Express Scripts' (NASDAQ: ESRX) proposal and recommended the CVS/Caremark merger. Also in the Journal:

Investors at Clear Channel Communications Inc (NYSE: CCU) believe they are being short changed and have started a showdown with private equity buyers.
The NYSE Group Inc (NYSE: NYX) and the Tokyo Stock Exchange are expected to announce an alliance.
US Airways Group (NYSE: LCC) may increase its offer for Delta Air Lines (OTC: DALRQ).

The Financial Times (subscription required) featured articles on News Corporation (NYSE: NWS) and Corus Group ADS (NYSE: CGA).

News Corp's MySpace is close to launching local versions in Canada and Mexico.
Tata Steel is expected to top CSN's offer for Corus Group at a takeover auction on Tuesday.

USA Today wrote that two years ago, Verizon Communications' (NYSE: VZ) Verizon Wireless turned down the opportunity to be the exclusive distributor of the iPhone in the U.S. because of Apple Inc's (NASDAQ: AAPL) financial terms and other demands.
Investor's Business Daily's "New America" column mentioned Universal Stainless & Alloy Products (NASDAQ: USAP) positively, writing that Universal is looking to expand abraod with little foreign competition. The specialty steel products company focuses on the aerospace and power industries and named Boeing Company (NYSE: BA) as a key customer.

MAJOR PAPERS:

The Wall Street Journal (subscription required) touched on the effect of the iPhone on Research in Motion's (NASDAQ: RIMM) business and also warned of more trouble at Ford Motor (NYSE: F) with the United Auto Workers union.

The "Heard on the Street" column recommended investors not "hang up" on Research in Motion's shares because of Apple Inc's (NASDAQ: AAPL) upcoming iPhone.
A plan by Ford to offer bonuses to a significant portion of its white-collar workers may upset UAW talks.

The Financial Times (subscription required) featured articles on Corus Group (NYSE: CGA) and Barclays plc ADS (NYSE: BCS).

A Front Page article said an iron ore dispute involving Companhia Vale do Rio Duce may threaten CSN's bid $11.2B bid for Corus Group.
Barclays is "poaching" Citigroup (NYSE: C) executives. The latest deserter is Todd Gravino, who will become Barclays CFO of global retail and commercial banking.

OTHER PAPERS:

The U.K. Times wrote that AstraZeneca ADS (NYSE: AZN) doubled its M&A team to seek out targets to help rebuild its weak pipeline of new drugs.
The Washington Post wrote that Lockheed-Martin Corporation (NYSE: LMT) was chosen for an identity card contract worth an estimated $70M.

MAJOR PAPERS:

Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) may be in talks to acquire the in-game advertising company AdScape Media.
Home Depot (NYSE: HD) directors are expected to meet with activist investor Ralph Whitworth, who wants the company to spin-off its lower margin supply business to better concentrate on its main stores.
Sun Microsystems (NASDAQ: SUNW) is expected to announce an agreement with Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) that would involve Sun buying Intel chips for its server systems.

Shares of Under Armour (NASDAQ: UARM) may be set to take a tumble and some only believe shares should be trading no higher than $40.
Shares of Alcoa (NYSE: AA) may be set for another run and John Buckingham of Al Frank Asset Management would buy shares up to $32.41.
The "Technology Trader" says it may be too early to walk away from shares of Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO).

The Financial Times (subscription required) reported that a private equity consortium may be after Dow Chemical (NYSE: DOW).

OTHER PAPERS:

The U.K. Times reported that Tata Steel and CSN are both expected to raise their bid for Corus (NYSE: CGA).
The Telegraph reported that BP's (NYSE: BP) exiting CEO Browne, dreamed of merging with Shell (NYSE: RDS.A).
