Analyst upgrades, downgrades and initiations: AXP, BHP, KBH, MSFT, TROW, USB ...

Analyst upgrades:

  • Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) was upgraded to Buy from Hold by Canaccord, which cited the company's strong Q1 results.
  • Pali Capital raised T. Rowe Price (NASDAQ: TROW) to Neutral from Sell following the company's better-than-expected Q3 results.
  • Under Armour (NYSE: UA) was upgraded to Neutral from Negative at Susquehanna following positive checks ahead of the company's Tuesday's Q3 report.
  • Stifel Nicolaus raised American Express (NYSE: AXP) to Buy from Hold, as the firm thinks the company is close to reaching "normalized" earnings.
  • Goldman Sachs upgraded Garmin (NASDAQ: GRMN) to Sell from Conviction Sell.
  • RBC Capital upgraded Noble Energy (NYSE: NBL) to Outperform from Sector Perform.
  • American Superconductor (NASDAQ: AMSC) was upgraded to Outperform from Sector Perform by Pacific Crest.

Analyst initiations: CLF, SYMX and BKHM

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Cleveland Cliffs, Synthesis Energy and Bookham Tech were today's noteworthy initiations:

  • KeyBanc believes the pullback in Cleveland Cliffs (NYSE: CLF) shares is an attractive entry point given acceleration of North American Iron Ore pellet contract pricing and increased pellet production into 2009. Shares were assumed with a Buy rating and $180 target.
  • Stanford believes the Synthesis Energy's (NASDAQ: SYMX) U-GAS technology offers several advantages, including the ability to use waste/low grade coal and operational cost savings and intitiated shares with a Buy rating and $12 target.
  • Morgan Keegan started Bookham Tech (NASDAQ: BKHM) with an Outperform rating and said the company continues to benefit from a expanding customer base, timing of new product introductions, and new products.

OTHER INITIATIONS:

Analyst initiations: Ascent Solar, Xcorporeal, Chipotle Mexican Grill

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Ascent Solar, Xcorporeal and Chipotle Mexican Grill were today's noteworthy initiations.

  • Cowen said Ascent Solar Technologies Inc.'s (NASDAQ: ASTI) unique thin-film solar technology is well suited for integrated applications. Shares were started with an Outperform rating.
  • Roth Capital believes Xcorporeal Inc (AMEX: XCR) is targeting a large, unmet market, as the firm notes that 500K patients are expected to receive kidney therapy over the next few years. Roth, which initiated shares without a rating, anticipates that the company will obtain regulatory approval for the home therapy and critical care markets during the next few quarters, possibly creating a catalyst for the stock to appreciate.
  • JP Morgan initiated the Class B shares of Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc (NYSE: CMG.B) with an Overweight rating as they believe the recent pullback provides a compelling entry point.

OTHER INITIATIONS:

Analyst downgrades: O'Reilly Automotive, Corning, Lincoln National

MOST NOTEWORTHY: O'Reilly Automotive, Corning and Lincoln National were today's noteworthy downgrades:

  • William Blair downgraded O'Reilly Automotive (NASDAQ: ORLY) to Market Perform from Outperform following weak Q1 results, citing the potential for further downward EPS revisions.
  • Thomas Weisel downgraded Corning Inc. (NYSE: GLW) to Market Weight from Overweight citing balanced risk/reward given the backdrop of a maturing LCD penetration and generational upgrade cycle, and the challenging environment.
  • Wachovia downgraded Lincoln National Corp. (NYSE: LNC) to Market Perform from Outperform as they believe the weak Q1 market weakness will impact profitability.

OTHER DOWNGRADES:

  • Smith International (NYSE: SII) was cut to Perform from Outperform at Oppenheimer.
  • Delphi Financial (NYSE: DFG) was downgraded at Friedman Billings to Market Perform from Outperform.
  • CIBC downgraded Biovail (NYSE: BVF) to Sector Performer from Sector Outperformer.

Analyst upgrades 7-24-07: CMLS, DFG, PBY and RNOW

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Lee Enterprises (LEE), The Pep Boys (PBY), Cumulus Media (CMLS), VeraSun Energy (VSE) and Acuity Brands (AYI) were today's more noteworthy upgrades:
  • Wachovia upgraded Lee Enterprises (NYSE: LEE) to Market Perform from Underperform on valuation.
  • RBC Capital raised Pep Boys (NYSE: PBY) to Sector Perform from Underperform citing upside potential from its real estate monetization strategy.
  • Cumulus Media (NASDAQ: CMLS) was upgraded to Hold from Sell at Citigroup based on the proposed buyout offer.
  • VeraSun Energy (NYSE: VSE) was upgraded to Hold from Sell at Soleil based on the acquisition of three 110mgy ethanol projects from ASAlliance.
  • Gabelli upgraded Acuity Brands (NYSE: AYI) to Hold from Sell following the company's announcement that it will pursue a tax-free spin-off of its specialty products business...
