Here are some highlights from this past week's earnings coverage on BloggingStocks:

  • Blockbuster Inc. (BBI) Q1 net loss was in line with estimates and same-store sales declined, shares also fell.
  • CA Inc. (CA) shares sold off on high volume following the Q4 earnings miss and disappointing guidance.
  • Cigna Corp. (CI) reported better-than-expected Q1 earnings and higher revenue, and reaffirmed its full-year outlook.
  • Cisco Systems Inc. (CSCO) beat Q3 earnings and revenue expectations in the "strongest quarter in our history."
  • Dean Foods Co. (DF) lower Q1earnings beat analysts' estimates, but shares fell on heavy volume afterward.

Dole Food: Sell After Q1?

Dole Food Company, Inc. (DOLE) is, at the time of this writing, down 76 cents to $9.98. That's a loss in value of 7%. The company had posted its Q1 numbers after the bell on Monday. The market is obviously not infatuated with them today.

According to the press release, adjusted EBITDA dropped to $85 million from $122 million. Net cash from operating activities plunged to $19 million from $39 million. These are not attractive statistics. A bad market environment in Europe and Asia apparently hurt the performance of fresh fruit.

  • UBS upgraded Boeing (BA) to neutral from sell, citing increased delivery forecasts. The firm raised its target to $68 from $50.
  • Benchmark Co. upgraded Meredith Corp. (MDP) to buy from hold to reflect improving broadcasting and magazine advertising fundamentals. The firm raised its target for shares to $40 from $36.
  • Keefe Bruyette upgraded Transatlantic (TRH) to market perform from underperform after the annual statutory data was published. The firm raised its target for shares to $51 from $4.
  • Disney (DIS) was upgraded to buy from neutral at BofA/Merrill.
  • Royal Caribbean (RCL) was upgraded to neutral from sell at Goldman.
  • FedEx (FDX) was upgraded to outperform from market perform at Morgan Keegan.

Closing Bell: Losing the DJIA 10K (AMZN, BIIB, BRCM, COF, DOLE, MSFT, SPWRA)

This was the day that could have been. Earnings were coming out favorably, yet the data just couldn't support the stocks. There were also trader comments that BofA/Merrill had large sell orders or sell programs throughout the day. It looks like the DJIA even closed out under the 10,000 mark on an unofficial basis.
