Magician David Blaine spins around New York City for Target ... and the needy kids

targetMagician David Blaine -- who many probably would wish to disappear and stay that way -- stepped inside a gyroscope Tuesday in Times Square. His hands and feet will be shackled to the spinning scope Thursday afternoon, Thanksgiving Day in the U.S.

What happens next? Blaine will have until Friday morning to make his escape. Blaine, who always seems to be successful getting out of the "magical" binds that he chooses, will lead 100 children selected by The Salvation Army on a shopping expedition at Target.

Target Corporation (NYSE:TGT) will supply each of the lucky recipients with a $500 gift certificate for the shopping expedition. While Blaine's act is decent, this feat of helping the Salvation Army assist some needy kids if his best exploit yet. In fact, Blaine said the stunt was particularly important since The Salvation Army had provided him with clothing while he was growing up -- and he said that "this challenge is close to my heart."

I for one hope Blaine can "escape" from his gyroscope in Times Square in time to ensure 100 lucky children get to have the shiniest Christmas that they probably have ever seen. Although the holidays are not about material goods and possessions, going from one extreme to the other would make the highlight reel of any kid who is used to having help from the Salvation Army.
