Salesforce.com's Growth Machine Won't Stop

Salesforce.com (CRM) logoIt's extremely tough for a company to maintain a super growth rate for a couple years. After all, rivals will emerge and the market will get saturated.

But there are exceptions. Just look at Salesforce.com (CRM). It seems there is no end to the company's growth. Then again, it is a leader in cloud computing, which is expected be one of the biggest megatrends in tech history.

Salesforce.com Strikes a Deal for Dimdim

While Salesforce.com (CRM) is the clear leader in cloud computing, the company still has serious competitive threats. In fact, the company is making some major changes -- with the goal of going to the next-level. Salesforce.com calls this "cloud 2.0."

A key to this strategy is acquisitions. Last year, Salesforce.com made six deals (they included Jigsaw, Sitemaster, Activa, Live Chat, Heroku and Etacts). And with a huge market cap and cash pile, Salesforce.com is certainly positioned nicely for more transactions in 2011.

Adobe looks squarely at Google, Microsoft with new web-based tools

The father of the PDF document, Adobe Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: ADBE), is starting to push further into the web-based document creation business. That strategy puts it squarely in the cross-hairs of Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) and its excellent Google Docs product, as well as software giant Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT), which is set to release a major online component with Office 2010.

Adobe indicated that a fee-based version its new online initiatives would allow businesses to covert all kinds of documents to the de-facto PDF standard, as well as hold online meetings via Acrobat.com.

Dimdim drums up $6.4 million

A group of tech veterans -- DD Ganguly, Jayant Pandit, Saurav Mohapatra, Sundar Subramanian and Rohit Shankar – have worked on various projects, despite being in far-flung places across the globe. They did so by leveraging free technologies such as Skype to help manage things.

However, they also wanted to share screens, but couldn't find anything for it as the conferencing software was either too expensive or complicated. So, they started a new company: Dimdim.

That was in 2006 and, as of now, Dimdim is getting lots of traction. In fact, the firm has raised $6.4 million in venture capital. The investors include: Index Ventures, Nexus India Capital and Draper Richards.

Dimdim is available as downloadable open source software. There is also an on-demand version.

For the most part, Dimdim is gunning for a large market opportunity. For example, Cisco (NASDAQ: CSCO) purchased WebEx for a whopping $3.2 billion. Other major players in the space include Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), Citrix (NASDAQ: CTXS) and Adobe (NASDAQ: ADBE).

So, if Dimdim can develop an enterprise-ready version and can provide it on a low-cost basis, the impact could be highly disruptive. And now, the company has some capital to give it a try.
