Just as President Obama lifted the executive order banning the use of embryonic stem cells for research, Roche and Genentech (NYSE: DNA) appear to have reached an agreement on Roche's bid to acquire the 44% of DNA that Roche does not currently own.

Shares of biotech companies engaged in stem cell protocols rallied after the Obama announcement. While most of these companies are small in size with stock prices below $2 per share, the announcement gave impetus to price increases of 17% to 100%.

Beware biotech originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 10 Mar 2009 14:40:00 EST. Its college dorm beginnings and customization model allowed the company to separate itself from a host of other competitors.

It is hard to say what exact magic it was that allowed the DELL story to unfold, but suffice it to say the company was the best in the business at selling computers to individuals and small businesses.
Seriously, can retail customers afford premium coffee when budgets are severely strained and debts are high?

No way. Premium coffee is a luxury item, and though many are addicted to java, cutting back is relatively easy to do. In that dynamic, sales are likely to slow.

Continue reading Single-serving coffee not the answer for Starbucks

Single-serving coffee not the answer for Starbucks originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 25 Feb 2009 15:01:00 EST.
Surprisingly, the answer is yes. Despite the market being down more than 10% at the start of this year, there have been a number of winners that have done quite well.

As I have said many times, the current environment is very unique. Nobody has ever seen anything like this.
After reporting reduced revenues for the fourth quarter of 2008, CBS is taking significant steps to conserve capital and strengthen its balance sheet.

The reason for the big gain was the company's fourth-quarter operating performance.

The company reported that it had earned $1.03 per share, excluding items. This compares favorably to analyst expectations of 99 cents per share. In the year prior, WMT made $1.02 per share.

The company said it is seeing customer traffic increase as it draws sales away from competitors. The intense focus on price savings is paying dividends during this economic slowdown.

WMT said earnings were hurt by a strong U.S. dollar that weakened the impact of overseas sales. Looking forward, WMT expects the global slowdown to negatively impact performance and that a strong dollar would hurt earnings over the next few quarters.

Continue reading Wal-Mart: One retail stock you can feel good about owning

Wal-Mart: One retail stock you can feel good about owning originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 18 Feb 2009 10:15:00 EST.
At the time, I suggested that the fundamentals at the company were so strong that the analysts downplaying the stock and the investors driving the price down were mistaken.

BWLD recovered in early December and held on to those gains for the first part of 2009.
We make an investment on reasonable assumptions and take the risk that such assumptions pan out. What we can't do is foresee events that are totally outside of the control of the company, economy, or ourselves. For example, if we buy a stock of a company that utilizes acquisitions as part of its strategy, we can safely assume from past examples that the government will approve or disapprove such acquisitions in a reasonable amount of time.

Continue reading Blame Uncle Sam for the demise of Sirius

Blame Uncle Sam for the demise of Sirius originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 12 Feb 2009 18:40:00 EST. We all know the economy is horrible, but certain companies are doing well in this environment no matter how tough it is for everyone else.

Case in point is The Coca-Cola Company (NYSE: KO).
A hot new company goes public, attracts investors and its stock goes through the roof. Everyone wants all-in until the price reaches an unsustainable level, and then the selling begins.

Eventually either the hot company crashes and burns, or recovers to provide more rational returns in the future.

Whole Foods Market (NASDAQ: WFMI) is a great example of this evolution.

Five years ago, this alternative grocery store was all the rage. The stock appreciated as investors believed that shoppers would be more than willing to part with more dollars in order to get food that was naturally raised without chemicals and pesticides.

Continue reading Time to get long Whole Foods (WFMI)

Time to get long Whole Foods (WFMI) originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 09 Feb 2009 19:00:00 EST.
