The company, whose colleagues include Dollar Tree (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/dollar-tree-inc/dltr/nas">DLTR</a>) and Family Dollar Stores (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/family-dollar-stores-inc/fdo/nys">FDO</a>), saw excellent growth in its bottom line. How should we view the stock?<br />
<br />
According to the corporate <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/dollar-general-reports-record-fourth-quarter-and-full-year-2010-financial-results/rfid426320156/?channel=pf">press release</a>, adjusted profit increased 27% to 65 cents per share. The <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/article/dollar-general-4th-quarter-net-income/1683959/">Associated Press</a> says that expectations were set at 59 cents per share. Furthermore, <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Same-Store%20Sales">same-store sales</a> appear healthy: They expanded by 3.8%.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/25/dollar-general-earnings/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dollar General: Buy on the Dips?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/25/dollar-general-earnings/">Dollar General: Buy on the Dips?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 25 Mar 2011 10:00:00 EST. Many businesses are closing their doors. Others are cutting back, laying off employees and reducing production. But with every crisis there is opportunity. Such is the case for Dollar General (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/dollar-general-corporation/dg/nys">DG</a>). In a time of high unemployment and low wages, consumers are counting every penny. Dollar General stores offer deep discounts, even beating discounters like Walmart (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys">WMT</a>).<br />
<br />
In the most recent quarter, Dollar General's income rose by 69%. The company also raised its full-year guidance by 10% to $3.22 billion.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/04/dollar-general-plans-to-open-625-new-stores-hire-6-000-employee/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dollar General Plans to Open 625 New Stores, Hire 6,000 Employees</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/01/04/dollar-general-plans-to-open-625-new-stores-hire-6-000-employee/">Dollar General Plans to Open 625 New Stores, Hire 6,000 Employees</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 04 Jan 2011 10:20:00 EST. Dollar General (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/dollar-general-corporation/dg/nys">DG</a>) is a retailer of low priced goods, which are in demand during this period of high unemployment. (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/cogent-inc/cogt/nas">COGT</a>). Traders plowed into 1,571 new <a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Call%20Option">call option</a> contracts -- 3.27 times the average volume -- on the stock on Friday. And we know that traders were eager to get into this trade because 99% of the trades came in on the ask price.</p>
<p>Recently, 3M Company (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/3m-company/mmm/nys">MMM</a>) announced that it was going to acquire Cogent for $10.50 per share. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/dollar-general-corporation/dg/nys">DG</a>) did well during the second quarter, but the company's shares are nevertheless down this afternoon. With a little over an hour to go before the market closes for the day, the stock is off by 1%, coming in at a quote of $27.06. <br />
<br />
The shares have traded in a range between $21.30 and $31.41 over the last twelve months. The <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/dollar-general-corporation/dg/nys/tech-chart">one-year chart</a> shows that the equity hit a rough patch after peaking in June. It's a familiar image by now.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/31/dollar-general-down-on-q2-news/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dollar General Down on Q2 News</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/31/dollar-general-down-on-q2-news/">Dollar General Down on Q2 News</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 31 Aug 2010 17:00:00 EST. Things were perhaps ameliorated somewhat by durable goods order numbers and a <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/27/gdp-for-second-quarter-revised-lower-down-to-1-6/">revised GDP</a> that weren't as bad as expected, but that didn't stop the Dow from dipping below 10,000 later in the week, before fighting its way back above the benchmark to end the week, thanks largely to Fed chair <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/2010/08/27/bernanke-fed-wont-let-economy-falter/19610932/">Bernanke's comments</a> on Friday.</p>
<p>Though the end of August is usually quiet, this week lots more economic data are due out, including more housing numbers: The Case-Shiller Home Price Index for June on Tuesday, <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Construction%20Spending" class="inlinked">construction spending</a> numbers for July on Wednesday, and <a href="http://www.realtor.org/">NAR</a>'s pending home sales for July on Thursday. There's not expected to be much to get excited about in these numbers.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/29/the-week-in-preview-employment-housing-manufacturing-earning/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Week in Preview: Employment, Housing, Manufacturing, Earnings Expectations</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/29/the-week-in-preview-employment-housing-manufacturing-earning/">The Week in Preview: Employment, Housing, Manufacturing, Earnings Expectations</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 29 Aug 2010 12:30:00 EST. Gold hit a record close as investors continue to look for safe havens, and that is also keeping a lid on bond yields in Treasuries. <br />

With a little less than three hours to go until the market closes for the day, I see a quote of $29.56, which represents a rise of over 1% in the share price. Volume is above average.<br />
<br />
A 1% rise isn't necessarily anything to get too excited about in a normal market, but in a bear market, it can be a badge of honor, especially when it follows an earnings report. You also have to like the fact that Dollar General's <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/dollar-general-corporation/dg/nys/tech-chart">chart</a> looks pretty good.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/08/dollar-general-up-on-q1-numbers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dollar General Up on Q1 Numbers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/08/dollar-general-up-on-q1-numbers/">Dollar General Up on Q1 Numbers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 08 Jun 2010 15:00:00 EST. But here's a look at what analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters are expecting from a few of the stragglers that are scheduled to report results.</p>
<p>In the three months that ended in February, <strong>Mosaic Co.</strong> (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-mosaic-company/mos/nys">MOS</a>) declared a <a href="http://money.aol.com/rtn/pr/mosaic-announces-quarterly-dividend-of-0-05-per-share/rfid279391078?channel=pf">quarterly dividend</a> and denied that the <a href="http://uk.reuters.com/article/idUKN1420951020100115">company was for sale</a>. Analysts expect this potash and phosphate producer to report that fiscal third-quarter earnings surged nearly 80% from the same period of last year to $0.63 per share. Revenue for the period is expected to be 31.6% higher to $1.8 billion. So far, analysts anticipate sequential and year-over-year EPS and revenue growth in the fourth quarter. However, Mosaic's earnings results have fallen short of expectations in three of the past four quarters, by as much as 11 cents per share.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/28/the-week-in-preview-end-of-season-earnings-from-dg-mos-rimm/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Week in Preview: End-of-Season Earnings from DG, MOS, RIMM ...</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/28/the-week-in-preview-end-of-season-earnings-from-dg-mos-rimm/">The Week in Preview: End-of-Season Earnings from DG, MOS, RIMM ...</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 28 Mar 2010 12:30:00 EST. Since then, the company has grown rapidly. Now, Dollar General is the largest discount retailer in the U.S. -- that is, in terms of the number of stores (which is currently at 8,577).</p>
<p>A few years ago, Dollar General went private, with the backing of <a href="http://www.bloggingbuyouts.com/kkr/">KKR</a>, Citi (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/citigroup-incorporated/c/nys">C</a>), Goldman Sachs (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-goldman-sachs-group-inc/gs/nys">GS</a>), Wellington Management and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board. It was at the height of the buyout boom, with a price tag of $7.3 billion. Only $2.8 billion was in equity.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/13/dollar-general-goes-retail-on-wall-street/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dollar General goes retail on Wall Street</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/13/dollar-general-goes-retail-on-wall-street/">Dollar General goes retail on Wall Street</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 13 Nov 2009 13:20:00 EST. Speculation is that <a href="http://money.cnn.com/2009/08/21/news/companies/dollar_general_ipo.fortune/?postversion=2009082114"><font color="#810081">Toys "R" Us </font>and Dunkin' Donuts</a> could be next. </p>
<p><a href="http://www1.toysrus.com/about/">Toys "R" Us Inc.</a> is owned by <a href="http://www.bloggingbuyouts.com/bain-capital/">Bain Capital</a>, <a href="http://www.bloggingbuyouts.com/kkr/">KKR</a>, and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/vornado-realty-trust/vno/nys">Vornado Realty Trust</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/vornado-realty-trust/vno/nys">VNO</a>). The world's leading dedicated toy and baby products retailer was a public company from 1978 until its acquisition by the private equity consortium in July 2005 for $6.6 billion. It has more than 1,500 stores in 33 countries, and its businesses include Babies "R" Us, eToys.com, and FAO Schwarz, the latter two acquired earlier this year. Main competitors include privately owned KB Toys, as well as big-box retailers <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/target-corporation/tgt/nys">Target Corp.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/target-corporation/tgt/nys">TGT</a>) and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys">Wal-Mart Stores Inc.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys">WMT</a>).</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/08/22/toys-r-us-and-dunkin-donuts-in-line-for-ipos/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Toys 'R' Us and Dunkin' Donuts in line for IPOs?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/08/22/toys-r-us-and-dunkin-donuts-in-line-for-ipos/">Toys 'R' Us and Dunkin' Donuts in line for IPOs?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sat, 22 Aug 2009 14:20:00 EST. But, in the case of <a href="http://www.bloggingbuyouts.com/kkr/">KKR</a>, there is no doubt that it made a good deal in the leveraged buyout of <a href="http://www.dollargeneral.com">Dollar General</a> in July 2007 (the company had been public since 1968). The price tag was $7.2 billion.</p>
<p>Now, the company has <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/29534/000104746909007911/a2194244zs-1.htm">filed to go public</a>. And, in light of KKR's recent success with the <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/avago-technologies-limited/avgo/nas">Avago</a> (NASDAQ: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/avago-technologies-limited/avgo/nas">AVGO</a>) public offering -- as well as the resurgence in the equities markets -- there's a good chance that Dollar General will also get a nice reception.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/08/21/kkr-presses-the-ipo-button-on-dollar-general/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>KKR presses the IPO button on Dollar General</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/08/21/kkr-presses-the-ipo-button-on-dollar-general/">KKR presses the IPO button on Dollar General</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 21 Aug 2009 07:00:00 EST.
