Week in Preview: Mosaic, Family Dollar Earnings and March Unemployment Rate

earnings expectationsThe calendar quarter winds down this week and quarterly reports are due from Apollo Group (APOL), CarMax (KMX), Global Payments (GPN), Krispy Kreme (KKD), Lennar (LEN) and McCormick (MKC). But analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters have high hopes for results from fertilizer and animal feed maker Mosaic (MOS), apparel maker Phillips Van Heusen (PVH) and discount retailer Family Dollar (FDO). So here's a look at what they anticipate from these three companies.

Mosaic

During its fiscal second quarter, Cargill agreed to distribute its stake in Mosaic, and Mosaic also said it would redeem senior notes. Analysts anticipate that the Minnesota-based potash producer will report per-share earnings of $1.07, a jump of 53.3% from the same quarter of last year. Mosaic also is expected to post revenue of $2.4 billion for the three months that ended in February. That's a 35.9% rise from a year earlier.

Dollar General: Buy on the Dips?

Dollar General (DG) reported earnings for the fourth quarter earlier in the week. The company, whose colleagues include Dollar Tree (DLTR) and Family Dollar Stores (FDO), saw excellent growth in its bottom line. How should we view the stock?

According to the corporate press release, adjusted profit increased 27% to 65 cents per share. The Associated Press says that expectations were set at 59 cents per share. Furthermore, same-store sales appear healthy: They expanded by 3.8%.

Closing Bell: Preparing for Earnings, with Bonds Closed (GYMB, ALXA, IBM, DLTR, CIT, POT)

With bonds closed and banks closed, equities here in the U.S. had a hard time trying to decide which direction the wind was blowing. The DJIA 11,000 mark was flirted with again in afternoon trading, this time on the downside on what appears to have been a positive close. Some M&A was a help, but investors used today and will likely use tomorrow to determine how they want to be positioned as earnings season kicks off.

Here were today's unofficial closing levels:

Dow Jones 11,008.59 +2.11 (0.02%)
S&P 500 1,165.04 -0.11 (-0.01%)
Nasdaq 2,402.33 +0.42 (0.02%)

The Week in Preview: Earnings from Walmart, Abercrombie and Other Retailers

retail earningsAs the earnings season begins to wind down, retail earnings move into the spotlight. Already, JCPenney (JCP), Kohl's (KSS) and Macy's (M) have posted earnings that topped consensus estimates, though the former two also offered disappointing guidance, and Nordstrom (JWN) met earnings expectations.

Many more retailers are scheduled to post their second-quarter results this week, including Walmart (WMT), Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF), and Dollar Tree Stores (DLTR), whose earnings expectations we'll take a closer look at here.

Dollar General Up on Q1 Numbers

Dollar General (DG), whose colleagues include Family Dollar Stores (FDO) and Dollar Tree (DLTR), is in the green during afternoon trading. With a little less than three hours to go until the market closes for the day, I see a quote of $29.56, which represents a rise of over 1% in the share price. Volume is above average.

A 1% rise isn't necessarily anything to get too excited about in a normal market, but in a bear market, it can be a badge of honor, especially when it follows an earnings report. You also have to like the fact that Dollar General's chart looks pretty good.

Closing Bell: Lower Than Expected Jobs, Oil, Leave Market Sliding (BP, DLTR, SPLS, WSM)

Today was an other down day, partly on Europe, partly on finance regulation, and partly on fears of growth slowing here. The jobless claims went up 25,000 when they were only supposed to change by a few thousand, leading many to fear that the jobs market is not really recovering at all. And oil was hit hard during the day on the contract roll-date. A late day sell-off took away any great hopes of recovery and set up a tone for a bad Friday with options expiration.

Here were the unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow 10,068.01 -376.36 (-3.60%)
S&P 500 1,071.59 -43.46 (-3.90%)
Nasdaq 2,204.01 -94.36 (-4.11%)
