But analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters have high hopes for results from fertilizer and animal feed maker Mosaic (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-mosaic-company/mos/nys">MOS</a>), apparel maker Phillips Van Heusen (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/phillips-van-heusen-corporation/pvh/nys">PVH</a>) and discount retailer Family Dollar (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/family-dollar-stores-inc/fdo/nys">FDO</a>). So here's a look at what they anticipate from these three companies.</p>
<p><strong>Mosaic</strong></p>
<p>During its fiscal second quarter, Cargill agreed to distribute <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/mosaic-and-cargill-agree-to-split-off-and-orderly-distribution-of-cargill-stake-in-mosaic/rfid405938161/?channel=pf">its stake in Mosaic</a>, and Mosaic also said it would <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/mosaic-to-redeem-455-million-2014-senior-notes/rfid394641356/?channel=pf">redeem senior notes</a>. Analysts anticipate that the Minnesota-based potash producer will report per-share earnings of $1.07, a jump of 53.3% from the same quarter of last year. Mosaic also is expected to post revenue of $2.4 billion for the three months that ended in February. That's a 35.9% rise from a year earlier.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/27/week-in-preview-mosaic-family-dollar-earnings-and-march-unempl/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Week in Preview: Mosaic, Family Dollar Earnings and March Unemployment Rate</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/27/week-in-preview-mosaic-family-dollar-earnings-and-march-unempl/">Week in Preview: Mosaic, Family Dollar Earnings and March Unemployment Rate</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 27 Mar 2011 12:30:00 EST. The company, whose colleagues include Dollar Tree (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/dollar-tree-inc/dltr/nas">DLTR</a>) and Family Dollar Stores (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/family-dollar-stores-inc/fdo/nys">FDO</a>), saw excellent growth in its bottom line. How should we view the stock?<br />
<br />
According to the corporate <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/dollar-general-reports-record-fourth-quarter-and-full-year-2010-financial-results/rfid426320156/?channel=pf">press release</a>, adjusted profit increased 27% to 65 cents per share. The <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/article/dollar-general-4th-quarter-net-income/1683959/">Associated Press</a> says that expectations were set at 59 cents per share. Furthermore, <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Same-Store%20Sales">same-store sales</a> appear healthy: They expanded by 3.8%.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/25/dollar-general-earnings/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dollar General: Buy on the Dips?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/25/dollar-general-earnings/">Dollar General: Buy on the Dips?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 25 Mar 2011 10:00:00 EST. This portfolio is up 54.48% since inception (August 2, 2000) vs. a decline of 10.56% in the S&amp;P 500 over the same time frame. We hope that you are participating in these profits. The <a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/dow-jones-industrial-average/%24indu/dji">DJIA</a> 11,000 mark was flirted with again in afternoon trading, this time on the downside on what appears to have been a positive close. Some M&amp;A was a help, but investors used today and will likely use tomorrow to determine how they want to be positioned as <a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/category/earnings/">earnings</a> season kicks off. <br />

Already, JCPenney (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/penney-j-c-co-inc-holding-co/jcp/nys" class="inlinked">JCP</a>), Kohl's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/kohl-s-corporation/kss/nys" class="inlinked">KSS</a>) and Macy's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/macy-s-inc/m/nys">M</a>) have posted earnings that topped consensus estimates, though the former two also offered disappointing guidance, and Nordstrom (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/nordstrom-inc/jwn/nys">JWN</a>) met earnings expectations.</p>
<p>Many more retailers are scheduled to post their second-quarter results this week, including Walmart (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys" class="inlinked">WMT</a>), Abercrombie &amp; Fitch (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/abercrombie-and-fitch-co/anf/nys" class="inlinked">ANF</a>), and Dollar Tree Stores (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/dollar-tree-inc/dltr/nas" class="inlinked">DLTR</a>), whose earnings expectations we'll take a closer look at here.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/15/earnings-preview-walmart-abercrombie-dollar-tree/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Week in Preview: Earnings from Walmart, Abercrombie and Other Retailers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/15/earnings-preview-walmart-abercrombie-dollar-tree/">The Week in Preview: Earnings from Walmart, Abercrombie and Other Retailers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 15 Aug 2010 12:30:00 EST. With a little less than three hours to go until the market closes for the day, I see a quote of $29.56, which represents a rise of over 1% in the share price. Volume is above average.<br />
<br />
A 1% rise isn't necessarily anything to get too excited about in a normal market, but in a bear market, it can be a badge of honor, especially when it follows an earnings report. You also have to like the fact that Dollar General's <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/dollar-general-corporation/dg/nys/tech-chart">chart</a> looks pretty good.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/08/dollar-general-up-on-q1-numbers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dollar General Up on Q1 Numbers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/08/dollar-general-up-on-q1-numbers/">Dollar General Up on Q1 Numbers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 08 Jun 2010 15:00:00 EST. The jobless claims went up 25,000 when they were only supposed to change by a few thousand, leading many to fear that the jobs market is not really recovering at all. And oil was hit hard during the day on the contract roll-date. A late day sell-off took away any great hopes of recovery and set up a tone for a bad Friday with options expiration. <br />

For the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/family-dollar-reports-record-second-quarter-earnings/rfid316619526/?channel=pf">second quarter</a>, the discount chain said it made 81 cents per share against 60 cents per share in the second quarter of 2009. That was good for a 35% growth rate.</p>
<p>Even better, though, was the fact that management was able to beat the estimates. Analysts were looking for <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/06/buy-family-dollar-before-q2-report/">78 cents per share</a> on the bottom line. The gross margin rose from 33.7% to 35.4%. Same-store sales expanded by 3.6%.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/07/family-dollar-rises-after-q2-numbers/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Family Dollar Rises After Q2 Numbers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/07/family-dollar-rises-after-q2-numbers/">Family Dollar Rises After Q2 Numbers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 07 Apr 2010 15:15:00 EST. The question is, should a trader open a position before the numbers?</p>
<p>This is a really difficult one. According to Trey Thoelcke's <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/04/the-week-in-preview-a-quiet-start-to-the-cruelest-month/">data summary</a>, analysts are expecting very good things from the retailer. Earnings may rise over 20% to 78 cents per share, while sales could increase just under 5%. Another positive element is the dividend payout: it was raised in January <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/rtn/pr/family-dollar-increases-regular-quarterly-dividend-by-14-8percent/rfid291605963/?channel=pf">by 14.8%</a>. You've got to take that as a sign of confidence on the part of the management team, right?</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/06/buy-family-dollar-before-q2-report/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Buy Family Dollar Before Q2 Report?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/06/buy-family-dollar-before-q2-report/">Buy Family Dollar Before Q2 Report?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 06 Apr 2010 14:40:00 EST. This action by a company will often serve to put an artificial floor on the stock's price, which is good for a bullishly slanted position. If you think that the stock won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on DLTR.<br />
<br />
DLTR opened this morning at $56.56. So far today the stock has hit a low of $56.56 and a high of $59.44. As of 12:00, DLTR is trading at $59.04 up 2.62 (4.6%). The chart for DLTR looks neutral and <a href="http://www.iotogo.com/spoutlookonline" target="_blank">S&amp;P</a> gives DLTR a neutral 3 STARS (out of 5) hold ranking.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/22/dollar-tree-rises-on-buyback-announcement/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Dollar Tree Rises on Buyback Announcement</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/22/dollar-tree-rises-on-buyback-announcement/">Dollar Tree Rises on Buyback Announcement</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 22 Mar 2010 12:50:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys">WMT</a>), the world's largest retailer, led off the coming parade of earnings reports from retailers by posting <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/18/walmart-sales-fell-2-in-the-fourth-quarter/">disappointing fourth quarter results</a>. JCPenney (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/penney-j-c-co-inc-holding-co/jcp/nys">JCP</a>), on the other hand, <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/19/jcpenney-shares-soar-on-earnings-beat/">easily topped earnings expectations</a>.</p>
<p>Many more shopping mall and strip mall stalwarts are scheduled to report results this week. The expectations of analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters are high for the likes of Sears Holdings Corp. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/sears-holdings-corporation/shld/nas">SHLD</a>) and Macy's Inc. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/macy-s-inc/m/nys">M</a>), RadioShack Corp. What does this mean? They're using their tangible assets effectively and have demonstrated the strength of intangible factors, such as brand and operational efficiency, to create shareholder value.</p>
<p>"Q" is the ratio of a public company's market capitalization to the market value of its tangible assets. So, a Q ratio of above one means that investors value the company's non-tangible assets -- e.g., brand, differentiation, innovation, customer experience and customer loyalty -- and see these factors as reasons to pay a higher price per share. A company with a Q ratio of below one can't generate a sufficient return on its physical assets. According to <a href="http://www.deloitte.com" target="_blank">Deloitte</a>, this could create an arbitrage opportunity, as it may be ripe for an acquisition.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/11/emerging-markets-and-electronics-retailers-sport-best-intangible/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Emerging Markets and Electronics Retailers Sport Best Intangible Values</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/11/emerging-markets-and-electronics-retailers-sport-best-intangible/">Emerging Markets and Electronics Retailers Sport Best Intangible Values</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 11 Jan 2010 12:00:00 EST.
