At the time of this writing, the stock was down 2.4% to $27.43. That might sound bad, but it's actually a higher price than the intraday low of $26.71 (for further perspective, consider that the 52-week low for the shares is $26.61). <br />
<br />
According to the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/article/dreamworks-4q-falls-short-of/451184/">Associated Press</a>, the cartoon studio made an adjusted 47 cents per share. Oh man, know what the overall estimate was? Try 75 cents per share. Huge disparity. Honestly, I'm shocked the stock didn't drop beyond the 52-week low today based on such performance.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/25/dreamworks-animation-drops-after-earnings-buying-opportunity/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DreamWorks Animation Drops After Earnings: Buying Opportunity?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/25/dreamworks-animation-drops-after-earnings-buying-opportunity/">DreamWorks Animation Drops After Earnings: Buying Opportunity?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 25 Feb 2011 18:00:00 EST. The fact that Time Warner Inc.'s (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/time-warner-inc/twx/nys">TWX</a>) <em>Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1</em> captured the top spot was a predestined event. And the fact that it made the most money of any <em>Potter</em> film in its debut, as many news reports have mentioned, is also, frankly, not a surprise. <br />
<br />
According to <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/">Box Office Mojo</a>, <em>Hallows Part 1 </em>grossed $125 million at domestic theaters. This <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/franchises/chart/?id=harrypotter.htm">data set</a> shows how that figure compares to the opening performance of the other entries in the series. It's impressive, certainly, but again, considering that the <em>Potter</em> projects have almost reached a conclusion (presumably, anyway), it seems fitting that there's a lot of excitement surrounding the release.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/22/time-warners-latest-potter-doesnt-surprise/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Time Warner's Latest 'Potter' Doesn't Surprise</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/22/time-warners-latest-potter-doesnt-surprise/">Time Warner's Latest 'Potter' Doesn't Surprise</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 22 Nov 2010 17:30:00 EST. This weekend, however, I have to give it at least some credit: It once again captured the top spot at domestic theaters. <a href="http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/">Box Office Mojo</a> says that the project made $29 million from Friday through Sunday, bringing the total gross so far to nearly $89 million. </p>
<p>Don't expect me to jump up and down for joy, though -- and I highly doubt shareholders of the studio are happy that the film didn't at least crack the $100 million mark by this point.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/16/dreamworks-animations-megamind-retains-top-spot/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DreamWorks Animation's 'Megamind' Retains Top Spot</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/16/dreamworks-animations-megamind-retains-top-spot/">DreamWorks Animation's 'Megamind' Retains Top Spot</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 16 Nov 2010 10:30:00 EST. Today, I'm going to briefly comment on the price movements of three that I am watching.</p>
<p>Activision Blizzard (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/activision-blizzard-inc/atvi/nas">ATVI</a>) is currently down 3% to $11.52, with significant volume backing the sell-off. Down, is that right, you ask? Yes, I'm afraid it is. I know: <em>Call of Duty: Black Ops</em> is doing excellent business. Millions of copies have been sold, and hundreds of millions of dollars <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/story/company-news/new-call-of-duty-sets-first-day-gaming-sales-record/19713555/">have been grossed</a>. Unfortunately, when it comes to trading on such news, the best bet is to sell out on any anticipatory rise that manifests itself before the event finally occurs.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/12/a-look-at-three-stocks-atvi-dwa-intc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A Look at Three Stocks: ATVI, DWA, INTC</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/12/a-look-at-three-stocks-atvi-dwa-intc/">A Look at Three Stocks: ATVI, DWA, INTC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 12 Nov 2010 15:15:00 EST. No matter how great management thinks the next project is, moviegoers may simply not send it into the stratosphere in terms of the first-weekend gross.<br />
<br />
Such is the case with DreamWorks Animation's latest project, <em>Megamind</em>. At first glance, it seems like an awesome hit. According to estimates over at <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/">Box Office Mojo</a>, the cartoon came in first place at domestic theaters over the three-day period, beating out other new films from Time Warner (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/time-warner-inc/twx/nys">TWX</a>) and Lions Gate Entertainment (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/lions-gate-entertainment-corp/lgf/nys">LGF</a>).<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/08/market-down-on-dreamworks-animation-after-megamind-debut/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Market Down on DreamWorks Animation After 'Megamind' Debut</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/11/08/market-down-on-dreamworks-animation-after-megamind-debut/">Market Down on DreamWorks Animation After 'Megamind' Debut</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 08 Nov 2010 14:30:00 EST. It's one of those fun stocks that investors like to check out (I like checking it out, at least). I'm sure a lot of market participants would love to find an excuse to add the stock to a trading portfolio, mostly because the idea that it will be purchased by some bigger entity is perhaps too big to ignore. <br />
<br />
At the time of this writing, shares were exchanging hands at a quote of $35.23, which meant that they were down less than 1%. The 52-week low is $26.61 while the 52-week high is $44.77. As the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/dreamworks-animation-skg-inc/dwa/nas/tech-chart">one-year chart</a> shows, the technical story is not as attractive as the computer-generated images produced by the company. <br />

It appears that the cartoon concern possibly isn't so fond of being a standalone entity any longer. Instead, it might want to be purchased by another media player. Comcast (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/comcast-corporation/cmcsa/nas">CMCSA</a>) was mentioned as a potential suitor.</p>
<p>There's some confusion, however, over this topic; it's not clear whether Jeffrey Katzenberg, the CEO of DreamWorks Animation, approached Comcast or Comcast approached Katzenberg.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/18/dreamworks-animation-buy-out/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DreamWorks Animation: Time for a Buy Out?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/18/dreamworks-animation-buy-out/">DreamWorks Animation: Time for a Buy Out?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 18 Jul 2010 13:40:00 EST. Time to declare your independence from fear. Specifically, the fear of holding risk in your portfolio. Ergo, I list four stocks here that investors should perhaps keep on a watch list. The choice is yours, but maybe you might find something of interest in these four.</p>
<p><strong>Abercrombie &amp; Fitch</strong> (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/abercrombie-and-fitch-co/anf/nys">ANF</a>): This stock is most definitely a risk, make no mistake about it. Being a retailer based on fashion, how can it not be in the current climate? Yet, back in May, the company's <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/18/abercrombie-and-fitch-trade-or-stay-away/">first-quarter numbers</a> didn't seem so bad (although they didn't comprise the best data set I've ever seen, either). And the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/charts/abercrombie-and-fitch-co/anf/nys/tech-chart">one-year chart</a> shows that Friday's closing price of $31.11 is getting close to recent support levels.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/04/four-risky-stocks-for-the-fourth/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Four Risky Stocks for the Fourth: ANF, BBY, DWA, NWS</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/07/04/four-risky-stocks-for-the-fourth/">Four Risky Stocks for the Fourth: ANF, BBY, DWA, NWS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 04 Jul 2010 14:40:00 EST. According to early estimates at <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/">Box Office Mojo</a>, the cartoon, distributed by Viacom (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/viacom-inc-new/via/nys">VIA</a>), is in the top spot yet again. It took in $25 million at domestic theaters, and its total gross so far stands at over $180 million. <br />
<br />
Surprisingly, <em>Get Him to the Greek</em>, from General Electric's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/general-electric-company/ge/nys">GE</a>) Universal Pictures, made only $17 million. That was good for second place, but I thought it would have easily done over $20 million. Universal has to be at least a little down on this debut, but I knew the project's relatively low budget, which is reportedly <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=gethimtothegreek.htm">$40 million</a>, would offer some room for spinning. This <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6530TD20100606">Reuters</a> article quotes an exec doing just that.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/07/shrek-DreamWorks Animation/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>'Shrek' Surprises in Third Weekend</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/06/07/shrek-DreamWorks Animation/">'Shrek' Surprises in Third Weekend</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 07 Jun 2010 09:00:00 EST. This week, it's the Mouse's turn to fail miserably. Disney (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-walt-disney-company/dis/nys">DIS</a>) was supposed to have a blockbuster on its corporate hands in <em>Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time</em>, a project that was produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, the same man who turned <em>Pirates of the Caribbean</em> into a major film franchise. <br />
<br />
After looking at the Friday-through-Sunday estimates, I can see that the company has nothing on its corporate hands, unfortunately. According to early numbers from <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/">Box Office Mojo</a> available at the time of this writing, <em>Persia</em> settled for third place with $30 million.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/30/disneys-prince-turns-out-to-be-a-frog/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Disney's 'Prince' Turns Out to Be a Frog</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/30/disneys-prince-turns-out-to-be-a-frog/">Disney's 'Prince' Turns Out to Be a Frog</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 30 May 2010 19:00:00 EST. The new <em>Shrek</em> bombed. There's no way to spin the statistic (although I can't wait to see how the company tries). According to early estimates at <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/">Box Office Mojo</a>, <em>Shrek Forever After</em> grossed $71 million at domestic theaters over the three-day weekend. Why is this so bad? It was number one, after all. <br />
<br />
To begin with, big tent-pole pictures are in trouble if they don't score over $100 million in their debut spots. It's simply the way it is. Beyond that, you have to check out what the first <em>Shrek</em> made back in 2001 during its opening: that flick captured <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/franchises/chart/?id=shrek.htm">$42.3 million</a>. You mean to tell me the fourth in the series couldn't make at least double what the original did? If it had to bomb, it could have bombed a little less severely, don't you think?<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/24/dreamworks-animation-bombs-with-shrek/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DreamWorks Animation Bombs with 'Shrek'</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/24/dreamworks-animation-bombs-with-shrek/">DreamWorks Animation Bombs with 'Shrek'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 24 May 2010 09:50:00 EST. I've been wrong on a few stocks. Sure, the market has been volatile, and perhaps my ideas will eventually bear fruit, but it doesn't matter. When you're timing is off, it's off. And I've got to admit it.</p>
<p>Where shall I begin? Let's go with Disney (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-walt-disney-company/dis/nys">DIS</a>). I've been bullish on Disney. Like many of the analysts on Wall Street, I became infatuated with the prospects for the Mouse's studio operations. A little too infatuated, I think. I kept throwing around this $40 personal price target. My rationale? Perhaps it turned out to be too simplistic; I basically said that, because <em>Iron Man 2</em>, <em>Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time</em> and <em>Toy Story 3</em> were all ready to reign supreme at the box office, traders would become excited and more than willing to fulfill the promise of the one-year chart and keep the technicals moving in a positive direction.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/22/stocks-ive-been-wrong-on/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Thoughts from the Week: Stocks I've Been Wrong On</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/22/stocks-ive-been-wrong-on/">Thoughts from the Week: Stocks I've Been Wrong On</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sat, 22 May 2010 11:40:00 EST. According to early estimates from the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/article/iron-man-2-stays-atop-box-office-with/599796/">Associated Press</a> (which could change once final numbers are issued, like they did <a href="http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2010/05/10/box-office-actuals-iron-man-2-grosses-5-million-less-than-originally-reported/">last time around</a>), the superhero flick, which is distributed by Viacom (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/viacom-inc-new/via/nys">VIA</a>), captured $53 million over the weekend at domestic theaters, making it the top feature once again. <br />
<br />
The new <em>Robin Hood</em> picture, starring Russell Crowe and brought to multiplexes by General Electric's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/general-electric-company/ge/nys">GE</a>) Universal Pictures, came in second with what I thought was a weak $37 million.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/17/iron-man-2-is-a-hero-again-to-disney/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Iron Man 2: A Hero Again for Disney</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/17/iron-man-2-is-a-hero-again-to-disney/">Iron Man 2: A Hero Again for Disney</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 17 May 2010 08:30:00 EST. The project dominated the screens, as it was expected to do. According to estimates at <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/">Box Office Mojo</a>, the movie, which is distributed by Viacom (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/viacom-inc-new/via/nys">VIA</a>), brought in about $133 million. <br />
<br />
The rest of the weekend's features all made less than $10 million; talk about an unfair fight. Time Warner's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/time-warner-inc/twx/nys">TWX</a>) <em>A Nightmare on Elm Street</em> came in second with $9 million. DreamWorks Animation's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/dreamworks-animation-skg-inc/dwa/nas">DWA</a>) <em>How to Train Your Dragon</em>, also distributed by Viacom, was third, grossing over $6 million. News Corp.'s (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/news-corporation/nws/nas">NWS</a>) <em>Date Night </em>took up the fourth spot, while CBS (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/cbs-corporation/cbs/nys">CBS</a>) Films and <em>The Back-Up Plan </em>did enough business to secure position number five.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/10/iron-man-2-tops-at-theaters-what-about-disney/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>'Iron Man 2' Tops at Theaters: What About Disney Stock?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/10/iron-man-2-tops-at-theaters-what-about-disney/">'Iron Man 2' Tops at Theaters: What About Disney Stock?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 10 May 2010 09:00:00 EST. Wall Street was not excited by the latest earnings data. But does this mean the company should now be considered a pariah?</p>
<p>The stock closed yesterday at $41.38. This represented a decline of 98 cents, or 2.3%. The shares hit an intraday low of $40.07. Talk about pessimistic. It was a piece on the economic science of advertising a feature movie. And it mentioned DreamWorks Animation's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/dreamworks-animation-skg-inc/dwa/nas">DWA</a>) <em>How to Train Your Dragon</em>. That film hasn't done as well as management probably expected; it certainly didn't do as well as the market expected, judging by the <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/29/dreamworks-animation-dip-an-opportunity/">price action of DWA</a> after the flick's first weekend at bat.</p>
<p>According to <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE63768T20100408">Reuters</a>, all the studios are trying to deal with the inflationary aspects related to opening a movie. Whether you're a Disney (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-walt-disney-company/dis/nys">DIS</a>) or a Time Warner (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/time-warner-inc/twx/nys">TWX</a>), it makes no difference; if you want a big debut weekend for a tent-pole production, you're probably going to put a lot of capital to work (and, by definition, at risk).</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/10/dreamworks-fumbles-dragon-marketing/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Did DreamWorks Animation Fumble 'How to Train Your Dragon' Marketing?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/10/dreamworks-fumbles-dragon-marketing/">Did DreamWorks Animation Fumble 'How to Train Your Dragon' Marketing?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sat, 10 Apr 2010 12:40:00 EST. There was a lot to watch for those who invest in the media sector. Let's have a look at what went on.</p>
<p>First, Time Warner Inc. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/time-warner-inc/twx/nys">TWX</a>) scored with <em>Clash of the Titans</em>. I think most observers were expecting this one to reign supreme. According to estimates available at the time of this writing over at <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/">Box Office Mojo</a>, <em>Titans</em> made over $60 million in the domestic marketplace. Shareholders are hoping that this will be the start of another good run for the studio. As you'll probably recall, Time Warner was <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/12/31/thoughts-on-time-warners-2009-box-office-performance/">very successful</a> in the celluloid game during 2009.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/05/time-warner-and-lions-gate-clash-at-box-office/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Time Warner and Lions Gate Clash at Box Office</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/04/05/time-warner-and-lions-gate-clash-at-box-office/">Time Warner and Lions Gate Clash at Box Office</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 05 Apr 2010 17:20:00 EST. According to <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN2819934520100328?type=marketsNews">reports</a>, financial publication <em>Barron's</em> is enthusiastic about the value of the media company's shares. Indeed, <em>Barron's</em> makes a compelling case. <br />
<br />
The price of the stock, in terms of the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Price-Earnings%20Ratio%20-%20P/E%20Ratio">P/E</a> ratio, does look rather inexpensive. When you put the P/E ratio against the technical strength of the shares, there's no way not to be intrigued. Viacom is up by a double-digit percentage on a year-to-date basis, and it isn't far from a 52-week high.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/30/is-viacom-a-trade-after-barrons-piece/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Is Viacom a Trade After Barron's Piece?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/30/is-viacom-a-trade-after-barrons-piece/">Is Viacom a Trade After Barron's Piece?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 30 Mar 2010 11:30:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/dreamworks-animation-skg-inc/dwa/nas">DWA</a>) is down today. Very down. At the time of this writing, shares of the animation studio were off well over 8%, and volume was pretty huge. The cartoon <em>How to Train Your Dragon</em> is not sitting well with Wall Street.<br />
<br />
That's because the movie's opening gross apparently was much less than what analysts wanted to see. According to <a href="http://boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/">Box Office Mojo</a>, <em>Dragon</em>, which is distributed by Viacom, Inc. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/viacom-inc-new/via/nys">VIA</a>),<em> </em>pulled in around $43 million at domestic theaters over the three-day weekend, making it the top project. The Walt Disney Company's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/the-walt-disney-company/dis/nys">DIS</a>) very successful <em>Alice in Wonderland</em> fell to second place.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/29/dreamworks-animation-dip-an-opportunity/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>DreamWorks Animation: Dip an Opportunity?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/03/29/dreamworks-animation-dip-an-opportunity/">DreamWorks Animation: Dip an Opportunity?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 29 Mar 2010 15:30:00 EST.
