Consumers can use Serve to make digital purchases, pay off bills, transfer funds and send money via Apple's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/apple-inc/aapl/nas" class="inlinked">AAPL</a>) iPhone and Google's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/google-inc/goog/nas" class="inlinked">GOOG</a>) Android phones. <br />
<br />
Serve is also available via the web and Facebook, and users are provided a debit card as a traditional way for a consumer to access their accounts. The card can be used at any ATM machine or vendor that accepts American Express.<br />

The editor of the <a href="http://www.moneyletter.com/">MoneyLetter</a> explains, "Jerome Dodson, president of Parnassus Investments and portfolio manager of the fund, states, "I've always felt that companies that treat their employees well do better than those that don't.<br />

A selloff late in the day erased the small gains, and markets closed in the red today. <br />
<br />
Another weak housing figure did not manage to cause too much harm as -- by now -- investors are conditioned to expect poor housing data. Consumer spending and income rose in February, topping expectations. U.S. investors also continued to expect that oil infrastructure would keep growing based upon Middle East build-outs for expanded production.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/28/closing-bell-monday-gave-up-gains-alu-ebay-gsic-fslr-ewj/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Closing Bell: Stocks Give Up Gains (ALU, EBAY, GSIC, FSLR, EWJ, CCJ, PKD)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/28/closing-bell-monday-gave-up-gains-alu-ebay-gsic-fslr-ewj/">Closing Bell: Stocks Give Up Gains (ALU, EBAY, GSIC, FSLR, EWJ, CCJ, PKD)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 28 Mar 2011 16:30:00 EST. Then again, the reason was usually that the transaction had only a tangential strategic connection (like Skype). But, when there were clear synergies, the results have been particularly strong. Just look at PayPal.<br />
<br />
Well, it looks like eBay has learned this lesson. That is, the company's latest big deal is the <a href="http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20110328006021/en/eBay-Acquire-GSI-Commerce">$2.4 billion acquisition</a> of GSI Commerce (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/gsi-commerce-inc/gsic/nas">GSIC</a>).</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/28/ebay-strikes-a-2-4-billion-deal-for-gsi-commerce/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>eBay Strikes a $2.4 Billion Deal for GSI Commerce</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/28/ebay-strikes-a-2-4-billion-deal-for-gsi-commerce/">eBay Strikes a $2.4 Billion Deal for GSI Commerce</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 28 Mar 2011 14:30:00 EST. After all, they have become a key part of our lives. And smartphones have the power to carry out secure and sophisticated transactions.</p>
<p>As is no surprise, many companies are scrambling to be winners in the e-wallet space. Take American Express (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/american-express-company/axp/nys">AXP</a>). The company has <a href="http://www.fiercemobilecontent.com/story/american-express-launches-serve-digital-commerce-platform/2011-03-28">launched a new e-wallet</a> called Serve.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/28/american-express-e-wallet-serve/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>American Express Revs Up Its E-wallet</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/28/american-express-e-wallet-serve/">American Express Revs Up Its E-wallet</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 28 Mar 2011 11:30:00 EST. It seems that the market for used electronics is booming. Much of it is resold to developing countries. But even here in the U.S. consumers are dumping their old iPads and buying the new iPad2, the <a href="http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/937dde18-4c0b-11e0-82df-00144feab49a,s01=1.html#axzz1GVxrEmXZ"><em>Financial Times</em></a> reports.</p>
<p>That sets up a huge secondary market. The big beneficiaries are eBay (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/ebay-inc/ebay/nas" class="inlinked">EBAY</a>) and the Apple Store. On eBay, for example, sales jumped from 3,300 to 7,700 in a week with prices dropping from $531 to $484 in just one week. If buyers had done some research they could have bought the same unit from the Apple Store for $399, according to the <em>FT</em>.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/14/would-you-buy-a-used-ipad/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Would You Buy a Used iPad?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/14/would-you-buy-a-used-ipad/">Would You Buy a Used iPad?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 14 Mar 2011 11:00:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/ebay-inc/ebay/nas">EBAY</a>), first discussed here on on May 14, 2009 at a price of $16.84, have pushed through psychological resistance at $30, and now may be a good time to consider taking some profits off the table with EBAY, if you're in at/near $17. <br />
<br />
However, those investors who can tolerate the risk can maintain their full position, and go for an even larger gain, as EBAY is likely to continue to head north. <br />

eBay's marketplace unit, displaying more than 140 million listings per day, should post a revenue rise of 6-8% in 2011. Meanwhile, PayPal, now in 190 markets, should register 20% revenue growth in both 2011 and 2012.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/02/ebay-is-in-an-uptrend/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>eBay Is in an Uptrend</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/03/02/ebay-is-in-an-uptrend/">eBay Is in an Uptrend</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 02 Mar 2011 16:30:00 EST. This is the new mantra at eBay. According to chief executive John Donahoe: "Clearly, I hope you see that we are starting to play offense."</p>
<p>EBay (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/ebay-inc/ebay/nas" class="inlinked">EBAY</a>) has long been a dominant player in the e-commerce industry. <a href="http://pages.cs.brandeis.edu/%7Emagnus/ief248a/eBay/history.html">Started in 1995</a>, it has brought together buyers and sellers in an auction format. Now, 16 years later and highly successful, the company finds a new competitor in Amazon.com (<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/amazon-com-inc/amzn/nas">AMZN</a>), which is grabbing market share. In the meantime, eBay has acquired Paypal, as a wholly owned subsidiary. Paypal, an online payment service, helped to propel eBay's business transactions.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/11/a-makeover-for-ebay/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>A Makeover for eBay</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2011/02/11/a-makeover-for-ebay/">A Makeover for eBay</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Fri, 11 Feb 2011 12:15:00 EST. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters foresee strong reports from such big names as Apple (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/apple-inc/aapl/nas" class="inlinked">AAPL</a>), eBay (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/ebay-inc/ebay/nas" class="inlinked">EBAY</a>), IBM (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/international-business-machines-corporation/ibm/nys">IBM</a>), General Electric (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/general-electric-company/ge/nys" class="inlinked">GE</a>), Google (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/google-inc/goog/nas">GOOG</a>), Schlumberger (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/schlumberger-ltd-netherlands-antilles/slb/nys" class="inlinked">SLB</a>) and Southwest Airlines (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/southwest-airlines-co/luv/nys" class="inlinked">LUV</a>). Although, it looks like the standout is Apple (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/apple-inc/aapl/nas">AAPL</a>). As a sign of it prowess, the company has a market value over $300 billion.<br />
<br />
But the competitive environment is intensifying. Just look at Google (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/google-inc/goog/nas">GOOG</a>). Not long ago, its Android mobile operating system was considered an interesting side project. Now, it has become a juggernaut.<br />
<br />
Yet the problem is that it has proven to be difficult to monetize. But Google is not giving up. In fact, it looks like the company is building a mobile payments platform - which may hit the market this year. This is according to a recent <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/dec2010/tc20101231_087039.htm">piece</a> in BusinessWeek.com.<br />

Big drivers have been PayPal and the mobile business. But another key has been acquisitions.</p>
<p>Even as the year closes, eBay is still striking deals. The <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-12-20/ebay-to-buy-brands4friends-at-transaction-value-of-200-million.html">latest one</a> came today: the purchase of brands4friends. For those that didn't, don't fret: first discussed here <a href="http://%20%20http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/09/09/ebay-online-auction-star/#continued">on May 14, 2009</a> at a price of $16.84, there's more upside ahead for eBay, and I obviously still like the business model here. <br />

eBay's marketplace revenue should increase a health 7-9% in 2010. Meanwhile, Skype (in which eBay owns a 30% stake) should increase at double-digit rates in 2010 and 2011; PayPal, at better than 20% in both 2010 and 2011.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/16/is-there-more-upside-ahead-for-ebay/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Is There More Upside Ahead for eBay?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/12/16/is-there-more-upside-ahead-for-ebay/">Is There More Upside Ahead for eBay?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 16 Dec 2010 15:00:00 EST.
