Markets opened lower this morning, with the DJIA down around 70 points before noon as it pulled back from near 12,000. Earnings reports from some blue-chip stocks were lukewarm to poor, contributing to the slide. News that President Obama will propose a federal spending freeze and a ban on congressional earmarks provided a bit of an up-tick in the early afternoon, but not enough to overcome the earlier decline. Crude oil is trading below $87/barrel and gold is down -$13/oz, to $1,331.50, its lowest level in nearly three months.

U.S. stock futures are lower Tuesday morning, as investors await earnings reports from several major companies as well as data on consumer confidence and housing prices. Futures on the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 8 points to 11,922.00; S&P 500 futures dropped 3.70 points to 1,284.80; and Nasdaq 100 futures dropped 9 points to 2,289.00.

U.S. stocks closed higher Monday, with the blue-chip Dow index gaining 108.68 points, or 0.92%.

The Case-Shiller home-price index for November is due at 9 a.m. ET and consumer-confidence data for January will be released at 10 am ET.

President Barack Obama is scheduled to deliver the State of the Union address this evening.

Sony logoThere were two pieces of Sony Corp. (SNE)-related news in the past 24 hours. First, Sony Ericsson, the joint venture of LM Ericsson (ERIC) and Sony, posted on Friday an unexpected net gain of euro21 million, or $28 million, for the first quarter, even as the company's revenue dropped 19% to euro1.41 billion. A year ago, the company lost euro293 million. It lost euro167 million in the fourth quarter. The phonemaker's profit received a boost from the fact that its restructuring charge was just euro3 million, far lower than the euro150 million worth of charges in the fourth quarter.

Meanwhile, late Thursday, market researcher NPD Group released data showing that game software sales increased roughly 10% during March, far better than the 5% expected, and the first period of growth in six months. However, game hardware sales dropped 4%. Video-game sales received a major boost from strong releases.

Analyst upgrades:
  • Baird upgraded Nike (NYSE: NKE) to Outperform from Neutral on expectations the company will benefit from the drop in the U.S. dollar and continued solid trends in athletic footwear. The firm raised its target on shares to $69 from $61.
  • Deutsche Bank upgraded Temple-Inland (NYSE: TIN) to Buy from Hold as it believes the company is well positioned for cyclical turnaround in the Paper/Building Products space. The firm raised its target on shares to $19 from $11.
  • Goldman upgraded Diageo (NYSE: DEO) to Buy from Neutral to reflect the current valuation and the company's exposure to emerging markets.
  • Deutsche Bank (NYSE: DB) was upgraded to Hold from Sell at ING Group.
  • Banco Santander (NYSE: STD) was lifted to Buy from Hold at Deutsche Bank.
  • Jackson Hewitt (NYSE: JTX) was upgraded at Oppenheimer to Outperform from Perform.

  • Morgan Stanley upgraded shares of Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) to Overweight from Equal Weight on expectations of continued iPhone growth. The firm raised its target on the stock to $180 from $105.
  • FBR Capital upgraded Bank of America (NYSE: BAC) to Market Perform from Underperform as it sees limited downside with half of the company's capital plan completed. The firm keeps a $12 target on the stock.
  • Jefferies upgraded Cash America (NYSE: CSH) to Buy from Hold to reflect a strengthened balance sheet following the capital raise and easing regulatory risk. The firm raised its target price to $30 from $22.
  • Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) was upgraded to Outperform from Market Perform at Bernstein.
  • MB Financial (NASDAQ: MBFI) was raised to Outperform from Neutral at Baird.
  • Pinnacle West (NYSE: PNW) was upgraded at Credit Suisse to Outperform from Neutral.

  • Morgan Stanley said Bank of America's (NYSE: BAC) capital needs are largely known and shares are trading "cheaply despite reduced downside risk." The firm upgraded shares to Overweight from Underweight and raised the price target to $25 from $16. Shares were also upgraded to Outperform from Neutral at Baird citing manageable capital needs and attractive risk/reward.
  • Keefe Bruyette upgraded Fifth Third Bancorp (NASDAQ: FITB) to Outperform from Market Perform on valuation as it views the stock as inexpensive despite the recent rally. The firm has an $8 target on the stock.
  • Banc of America/Merrill upgraded Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) to Buy from Neutral as it believes fewer hedging losses could bring upside over the next few quarters.
  • Rio Tinto (NYSE: RTP) was raised to Overweight from Neutral at Barclays.
  • EnerNOC (NASDAQ: ENOC) was lifted to Buy from Neutral at Janney Montgomery.
  • Westpac Banking (NYSE: WBK) was upgraded to Neutral from Underperform at Credit Suisse.

ERIC logoLM Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC - option chain) stock is falling today after Sony Ericsson, the joint venture between Sony (NYSE: SNE) and ERIC, forecast continued weak mobile phone handset sales. Things are so bad that they expect to ship only half the phones this quarter that they did last, but keep in mind last wuarter included the holiday season. If you think this stock won't be rising too far in the coming months, then it could be a good time to look at a bearish hedged play on ERIC.

This morning, ERIC opened at $8.44. So far today the stock has hit a low of $8.22 and a high of $8.53. As of 11:50, ERIC is trading at $8.31, down 99 cents (-10.7%). The chart for ERIC looks neutral and S&P gives ERIC a 3 STARS (out of 5) hold ranking.

U.S. stock futures crept higher Wednesday morning, but investors will likely continue to focus on President Obama's economic stimulus bill, housing plan and auto and financial sector bailouts: Before the bell: Stocks may start session higher; housing plan, economy, autos in focus

General Motors Corp. (NYSE: GM) and Chrysler LLC barely managed to submit their recovery plans by the deadline that was part of their deal to receive $13.4 billion in government loans. It wasn't clear how they could plan a recovery given the state of the economy in general and the auto industry in particular. GM said it is cutting a total of 47,000 jobs globally and closing five more U.S. factories. It said it may need up to $30 billion, but asked for $9.1 billion now. Chrysler said it will cut 3,000 more jobs and stop producing three vehicle models. Chrysler requested $5 billion in new loans. GM shares rose 2.3% in premarket trade.
