They unfortunately didn't meet the market's expectations. Today, the shares are under a bit of selling pressure. But is the dip an opportunity?

According to the AP, the year-over-year profit growth wasn't so bad. On an adjusted basis, the beauty business made 29 cents per share in the recently completed quarter versus booking 20 cents per share in the previous year's similar period. Sounds fine, of course, but there is the analyst game to consider. On that front, the company lost. The call was set at 30 cents per share. For the want of a penny, my friends.

Continue reading Estee Lauder: Buy or Sell?

Estee Lauder: Buy or Sell? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 13 Aug 2010 17:20:00 EST. It was fitting, in a sense, since it was the day before Halloween. In fact, as this Closing Bell piece noted, there were more tricks than treats to be had on Wall Street.

There are always equities bucking the trend, however. The Estee Lauder Companies (NYSE: EL) was one of them. Bullish buyers loved the beauty company's fiscal Q1 earnings release. As has been the case with many reports, the top line wasn't the fun part of the document: Estee Lauder saw a decrease of 2.7% for adjusted revenues. Here's the item of interest: net income after charges was 85 cents per share, more than three times what was made in the comparable frame.

Continue reading Estee Lauder's earnings explode to the upside in Q1

Estee Lauder's earnings explode to the upside in Q1 originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sat, 31 Oct 2009 14:10:00 EST. That's compared to a net loss of $0.05 per share in the year-ago period. Okay, I concede, that was a pretty good performance. It was partly driven by lower interest expenses and a benefit derived from the repurchase of some senior notes. Free cash flow also saw a gain.

Continue reading Revlon's current Q1 profit is a lot prettier than last year's loss

Revlon's current Q1 profit is a lot prettier than last year's loss originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sat, 02 May 2009 13:40:00 EST. Americans tend to be optimistic and like to look forward to a better future. But before we get too far down the road, let's take one last look in the rear-view mirror.

How many times have we looked at the outgoing president and remarked at how fast the office aged him? How gray, old and tired he looks.

What comes to mind when you think of Presidents Day?

Sadly, after Washington and Lincoln, it's mattress sales or furniture bargains. (Car sales are off the radar this year, for obvious reasons.) So, when I noticed that makeup maven Estee Lauder Companies (NYSE: EL) was trading significantly lower today in the wake of its latest earnings report, I decided to take a fresh look at the stock. Was my bullish endorsement back in December completely wrong-headed, or is today's drop just a blip on the charts?

First, let's sum up the quarterly results. EL banked a second-quarter profit of 80 cents per share on $2.04 billion in revenue. The profit number exceeded analysts' expectations by three cents per share, while revenue matched consensus estimates. However, the company warned that third-quarter net sales are expected to drop 2% to 4%, and it announced plans to cut its headcount by 2,000 employees over the next two years -- roughly 6% of its workforce.

Continue reading Should you invest in Estee Lauder's post-earnings pullback?

Should you invest in Estee Lauder's post-earnings pullback? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 05 Feb 2009 10:50:00 EST.
In addition to being a crackerjack equities analyst, I'm also something of a makeup aficionado. Credit my upbringing for this; my mother grew up in the '50s, and even today, she is loathe to so much as check the mail without a full application of liquid eyeliner. So, as you might imagine, I'm quite familiar with Estee Lauder Companies (NYSE: EL).

While it's technically a consumer-goods company, you might have a perception of Estee Lauder as a peddler of upscale cosmetics -- in today's economy, high-priced eyeshadow is unarguably a discretionary expense worth cutting. However, EL's reach is probably broader than you realize. For example, the company owns MAC, a line that caters specifically to professional makeup artists and amateur makeup fetishists. No matter the economic climates, these two constituencies can be counted on to keep shelling out for blush.

Estee Lauder also boasts the lower-priced Clinique line, a staple of many women's' skin-care and cosmetics routines for decades. On the high end, the company sells fragrances by the likes of Tom Ford and Michael Kors -- two names favored by the kind of consumers who do still have disposable income to spare. Plus, its Bumble and bumble brand name is a favorite of professional hair stylists.

Continue reading Cheap Stocks: Estee Lauder Companies

Cheap Stocks: Estee Lauder Companies originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sat, 06 Dec 2008 18:10:00 EST.
