A selloff late in the day erased the small gains, and markets closed in the red today.

Another weak housing figure did not manage to cause too much harm as -- by now -- investors are conditioned to expect poor housing data. Consumer spending and income rose in February, topping expectations. U.S. investors also continued to expect that oil infrastructure would keep growing based upon Middle East build-outs for expanded production.

Continue reading Closing Bell: Stocks Give Up Gains (ALU, EBAY, GSIC, FSLR, EWJ, CCJ, PKD)

Closing Bell: Stocks Give Up Gains (ALU, EBAY, GSIC, FSLR, EWJ, CCJ, PKD) originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 28 Mar 2011 16:30:00 EST. Japan led things south with news that the nuclear reactors were not shut down and could pose serious risks ahead. This sent Japan's NIKKEI 225 down more than 6% and back under the dreaded 10,000 mark. US markets held up better than expected, while news that Saudi troops were being asked to enter into protect Bahrain's infrastructure sent oil back up. US markets came back from larger losses late in the session.

Case in point: First Solar rose from about $120 to $175 this winter, before pulling back to about $157.

First Solar should post a 30% to 40% revenue increase in 2011, after a roughly 30% revenue increase in 2010, and it's those eye-opening growth rates that have attracted the attention of institutional investors ... until China announces a change in its solar policy. At which time FSLR typically plunges, until investors realize that the policy change won't render FSLR's business model obsolete. It short, objective events can change quickly in the solar sector, hence FSLR's high-risk stock designation.
Continue reading First Solar Retakes the $150 Level

First Solar Retakes the $150 Level originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 25 Feb 2011 15:00:00 EST. (FSLR), first discussed here on February 1, 2010, at a price of $113.81, continue to progress, but it's been a wild ride and the shares definitely are not for squeamish investors.

Further, First Solar's roller-coaster pattern continued this autumn: a rise to $150 in October was followed by a plunge to $120 in November; FSLR currently trades at about $135.

First Solar should post a 20% to 25% revenue increase in 2010, and a 35% to 40% revenue increase in 2011, and it's those eye-opening growth rates that have attracted the attention of institutional investors ... until China announces a change in its solar policy. At which time FSLR typically plunges, until investors realize that the policy change won't render FSLR's business model obsolete. It short, objective events can change quickly in the solar sector, hence FSLR's high-risk stock designation.
Continue reading The First Solar Roller-Coaster Continues

The First Solar Roller-Coaster Continues originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 07 Dec 2010 14:10:00 EST. In a research note this morning, JPMorgan cited alternative energy issue First Solar (FSLR) as one equity that could be damaged by the GOP's Congressional gains.

"Most of the downside is accounted for by the possibility of fiscally conservative measures, such as budget cuts and the reduction/elimination of certain subsidies," wrote JPMorgan in a note to clients.
A higher headline figure on wholesale inflation from PPI and a worse weekly jobless claims figure were matched with a wide trade deficit. To make matters worse, a 30-Year Treasury auction went poorly and suddenly long-bond yields are at the highest levels of a few weeks.

First Solar should post a 20% to 25% revenue increase in 2010, and a 30% to 40% revenue increase in 2011, and it's those eye-opening growth rates that have attracted the attention of institutional investors...until China announces a change in its solar policy. At which time FSLR typically plunges, until investors realize that the policy change won't render FSLR's business model completely obsolete. It short, objective events can change quickly in the solar sector, hence FSLR's high-risk stock designation.
Continue reading First Solar: The Wild Ride Continues

First Solar: The Wild Ride Continues originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 26 Aug 2010 15:30:00 EST. Specifically, the brokerage firm said that shareholders who've grown skeptical with lower earnings from First Solar might want to consider replacing their shares with call options.

With FSLR currently trading near $125, the firm is recommending that clients swap out their stock for December 125 calls. These intermediate-term options will cost you about $14.30, at last check, which means that FSLR must rise above $139.30 prior to December expiration before you'll begin seeing profits.
Continue reading JPMorgan Recommends First Solar Calls

JPMorgan Recommends First Solar Calls originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 02 Aug 2010 14:00:00 EST.
