In his Half-Priced Stocks, he says, "All told, PepsiCo has built an impressive lineup of 18 brands that each generate more than $1 billion in annual sales."

"Long ago, management realized that carbonated drink sales would fizzle out and per-capita consumption would become sluggish. In their place, bottled water and sports drinks became two of the fastest-growing categories. And Pepsi is the dominant player in both, with its Aquafina and Gatorade brands.

"The global population is expected to surpass 9 billion by 2050. Wages are rising in emerging economies--led by India and China--and more people are moving into cities where the consistent and better paying jobs are.

"That means greater demand for protein-rich foods, especially meat and dairy consumption. The consumption of both has a strong correlation to urbanization. The result will be a permanent increase in demand for crop grains for feeding.

Continue reading Monsanto (MON): Planting the seeds of growth

Monsanto (MON): Planting the seeds of growth originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 04 Feb 2009 14:00:00 EST. His simple theory is that with discretionary spending at a minimum, "everybody still needs to eat."

While it's certainly hard to argue with the fact that we all need sustenance, a different case can be made for investing in suppliers and vendors of food.

My dad thinks prices at the store will rise much higher because it's still cheaper than eating out, thus, great profits will be had by everyone up and down the supply chain.

But I'm not so sure.

Cal-Maine Foods, Inc. (NASDAQ: CALM), which released earnings on Monday, is a good example of why I'm not jumping onboard with this theory.

The company, which is currently the largest producer and distributor of fresh-shell eggs in the United States, said profit for its second fiscal quarter fell 32% as sales to egg-product makers and the food service industry slowed, and feed costs remained high.

Cal-Maine earned $1.14 per share for the quarter ended Nov. 29, but last year it earned $1.69 a share.

Continue reading Everyone's gotta eat, right?
The contributing editor to Stephen Leeb's Income Performance Report adds, "Consumer staples are set to sail through a tough economy." Here, he takes a look at PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP) and Heinz (NYSE: HNZ).

"From Gatorade and Tropicana to Frito-Lay and Quaker Foods, PepsiCo has built a $42 billion global empire marketing drinks and snacks that consumers are likely to buy through thick and thin making PepsiCo the classic consumer staples company.

"Over the next several years, we expect PepsiCo's earnings to grow at an average annual rate of 10% or more. The stock currently pays a 3.0% yield, and management has raised the dividend for more than 30 years in a row.

"The company has a strong balance sheet with low long-term debt. Best of all, Pepsi stock now trades at its lowest valuation (about 13 times next year's expected earnings) since 1990, making it a compelling buy now.

Continue reading PepsiCo (PEP) & Heinz (HNZ): Time for comfort food?

PepsiCo (PEP) & Heinz (HNZ): Time for comfort food? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 10 Dec 2008 12:30:00 EST. In The Complete Investor he looks at Mosaic (NYSE: MOS). a world leader in fertilizers.

"Mosaic has been decimated in price despite reporting record earnings. The company is the world's second-biggest producer of fertilizer components and the leading producer of potash.

"It's also the largest maker of processed phosphates, which gives it a lot of leverage to the rapidly growing markets of China and Brazil, and is an exclusive marketer of 1.2 million metric tons of nitrogen products.

"Since its high in June, the stock has lost three-fourths of its value and now trades at just 3 times next year's earnings. The sell-off came despite Mosaic's highest-ever earnings ($2.65 in the latest quarter vs. $0.69 a year earlier) and expanding gross margins (38.1% vs. 26%).

"The apparent reason was that those record earnings were slightly below some analyst estimates. Also, investors perhaps feared that farmers wouldn't be able to obtain credit to buy fertilizers.

"Once all the added liquidity puts these fears to rest, and given that the worldwide inventory of soybeans, corn, and wheat is forecasted to keep declining into 2009, we think demand for Mosaic's products will be strong.

"Sara Lee is a leading producer of branded foods, beverages, and personal care products. Roughly 50% of sales are generated outside of the U.S. Leading brands include Ball Park, Hillshire Farm, Jimmy Dean, Sara Lee, State Fair, Earth Grains, and Senseo brand coffee products.

"Management launched a comprehensive restructuring plan in 2005 to focus on core products and maximize operating efficiencies. These actions yielded $218 million in annualized cost savings in fiscal 2008.

"Food commodity costs soared earlier this year. However, SLE has been able to pass costs to customers through price increases. Furthermore, it has benefited from growing volumes. Fiscal Q4 net sales grew 12.2% year-over-year to $3.5 billion.

"With its earnings announcement, management issued fiscal 2009 guidance. It expects net sales to grow 4-6% year-over-year to $13.7-14 billion and pro forma earnings to grow 8-18% to 90-98 cents per share.

"Since issuing guidance, economic conditions have deteriorated significantly. This could lead to increased trading down activity to lower-priced brands or private-label goods.

"Also, the strengthening dollar has turned the foreign exchange tailwind into a headwind. Yet food commodity and energy costs have fallen significantly, which could provide margin relief for the company."

The co-editors of Vital Resource Investor explain, "The big cycle in food demand has begun, and long-term-oriented investors will be rewarded handsomely." What's the best play? Among their favorites is Monsanto (NYSE: MON).

"Monsanto is the undisputed leader in the genetically modified (GM) seed industry. Its business consists of two segments: Seeds/Genomics and Agricultural Productivity.

"The Seeds/Genomics segment consists of the company's global seeds and traits business, and genetic technology platforms, including biotechnology, breeding and genomics.

"The Agricultural Productivity segment consists primarily of crop protection products, residential lawn-and-garden herbicide products, and the company's animal agricultural businesses.

"Monsanto shares have been affected by the market's shorter-term gyrations, but the underlying business is extremely healthy. In fact, the seed business is currently in a sweet spot as global food demand changes dramatically.

Continue reading Monsanto (MON): Feed the world

Monsanto (MON): Feed the world originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 25 Sep 2008 10:54:00 EST.
The editor of The Turnaround Letter explains, "New management has begun to shake things up and the turnaround program is well underway." Here's the advisor's review.

"The roots of some of Kraft's products reach all the way back to 1767, but it wasn't until 1903 that James L. Kraft started his wholesale cheese business from a horse drawn wagon in Chicago. Today, Kraft produces many of the best-known food brands in the world.

"In 1988, Philip Morris (renamed Altria) purchased Kraft, and in 2000 it integrated the purchase of Nabisco into Kraft. Altria sold a small stake to the public in 2001, but maintained majority control until 2007, when the company was completely spun off as an independent company once again.

"Under the Altria umbrella, Kraft stagnated, with declining revenues and little product innovation. As a result, the stock price today is within $1 of the price where it was when first sold to the public in mid-2001.

"New management has begun to shake things up at Kraft. In June 2006, veteran food executive Irene Rosenfeld became CEO, returning to Kraft from a stint at Pepsico running its Frito-Lay division.

Continue reading Turnaround Kraft (KFT): New management 'shakes things up'

Turnaround Kraft (KFT): New management 'shakes things up' originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 22 Aug 2008 13:04:00 EST.
He adds, "Mainstream retailers and your corner grocer have been embracing the trend, devoting an ever-growing amount of shelf space to organic foods." Here's a trio of favorites.

"What was essentially a nascent industry in 1997 with $3.6 billion in sales has exploded to a behemoth with almost $14 billion in sales in 2006, according to the Organic Trade Association.

"And barring a major economic disaster worse than we've seen thus far, the industry looks set to continue double-digit growth well into the next decade.

"That's not to say there aren't potential troubles ahead as commodity prices continue to soar. Organic farming techniques tend to be more cost intensive--ironically enough--and transport costs continue to swell.

"But so far the industry has been able to pass the bulk of the higher costs onto consumers, and although sales volumes have dropped off and profits are down, those consumers are as dedicated as ever.

Continue reading Kraft, United Natural & Hain Celestial: Organic gains

Kraft, United Natural & Hain Celestial: Organic gains originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Tue, 29 Jul 2008 09:50:00 EST. Here, in Personal Finance, he looks at some agriculture, chemical and seed plays.

"During the past five years, consumer food costs have soared by more than 117%. And that momentum is increasing; in the trailing 12 months alone, prices surged more than 52%.

"The mega-investors aren't waiting around; they're buying into other parts of the ag business-from grain elevators to ag processors and distributors-as a workaround for such potential regulation.

"You shouldn't be sitting on your hands, either. This food trend is going to be here for a while, so you better stake your claim while buyers still outnumber sellers.

"One way to invest in this trend is to step into companies that are serving the ag producers. This means the companies developing and selling engineered seeds, as well as chemicals and fertilizer products needed to not just grow crops but more bountiful and, therefore, more profitable crops.

Continue reading Growth in seeds: Chemical ag plays

Growth in seeds: Chemical ag plays originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 09 Jul 2008 10:35:00 EST.
"An area of the market that hasn't been affected by the economic slowdown and isn't correlated with the equities has been the commodity markets. Global demand for commodities has continued to increase.

"This has lead to record highs for most commodities, including soft commodities. We expect this to continue. There are several reasons for this.

"First, emerging markets are developing at a rapid pace and their populations are becoming richer and can now afford to eat better. That leads to higher prices in soybeans, corn, wheat, etc. Second, there are government mandates for producing ethanol which has driven up the price of corn.

Continue reading MoneyMan sees growth in agriculture

MoneyMan sees growth in agriculture originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 17 Apr 2008 14:45:00 EST.
The editor of the industry-leading Commodity Trend Alert explains, "We love chocolate and want to own a great brand name that is likely to be acquired or partially acquired by a competitor at this low price." Here is his review.

"There's nothing more satisfying than a candy bar -- well, almost. I get even more excited about finding a great company or, in this case, a chocolate franchise selling at a distressed price, paying a nice dividend and home to shareholder activists seeking to boost their return on equity.

"We have regularly sought to identify distressed or contrarian blue chip stocks since 2001. The bottom line has to be deep-value and a strong catalyst for change as corporate earnings perform a 360-degree turn.

"Over the last two years, Hershey's common stock has been a real dog.
