Closing Bell: A Double From Lows (CAGC, CMCSA, DELL, DSCO, FDO, GENZ, SNY)

The FOMC Minutes offered a slight economic upgrade today. A large draw in oil inventories and word that Iran was sending two warships through the Suez canal to go to the Mediterranean spooked investors for a bit. The S&P is now up 100% from the lows of March 2009.

Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow Jones 12,288.17 +61.53 (0.50%)
S&P 500 1,336.32 +8.31 (0.63%)
Nasdaq 2,825.56 +21.21 (0.76%)

Closing Bell: Getting Back On Track (AMB, PLD, XOM, INTC, AMD, GENZ, EGPT, CCME)

This week got off to a good start considering that last Friday was a rough day in the market due to the geopolitics of the day. Egypt is not getting much better and the economy has come to a stop as no one is back at work yet. Still, things aren't getting worse. This offered some stability to the region. Brent Sea crude hit $100 per barrel today. Data from the PMI showed that inflation at the wholesale level continues to firm, while spending seems to outstrip income again.

Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow Jones 11,891.93 +68.23 (0.58%)
S&P 500 1,286.12 +9.78 (0.77%)
Nasdaq 2,700.08 +13.19 (0.49%)

Closing Bell: Dollar and Terror Kick Start the Week Off Weak (ISLN, MSFT, GENZ, SNY, AXP, ACTL, MSCC, PFE)

Stocks started the week off in the red on a key tech downgrade, and as the U.S. dollar rose against some key currencies. Frankly, today felt like a day where the real answer was "more sellers than buyers" over a key catalyst, even considering a EU terror alert. The end of the TARP program marked more sentiment than any real event.

Here were the unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow Jones 10,751.27 -78.41 (-0.72%)
S&P 500 1,137.03 -9.21 (-0.80%)
Nasdaq 2,344.52 -26.23 (-1.11%)

Closing Bell: Traders Put The Risk Back On (MSFT, LNG, OXGN, ARST, HPQ, GENZ, SNY, PCG)

Today was another up day, mostly thanks to the new Basel III banking accords showing that most banks are actually not in need of fresh capital any time in the immediate future. We also saw Warren Buffett refute that there is a double-dip recession and we also had a slightly less-atrocious August Treasury deficit than expected. This was a day where traders began putting back on the risk trade.

ADHD Patch Helps Investors Focus on Shire

ShireThe Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently gave Shire Plc (SHPGY) shareholders something to smile about when it approved Daytrana for treating patients between 13 and 17 years who suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Daytrana is the only ADHD treatment that is available in a transdermal patch, which delivers methylphenidate through the skin into the bloodstream. It is already approved for use by patients between 6 and 12 years.

With this announcement, Shire -- which licensed Daytrana from Noven Pharmaceuticals -- stands to gain market share and increase revenues.
