Analyst upgrades: ACAD, GNSS and STM

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Acadia Pharmaceuticals, Genesis Microchip and SAFECO Corp were today's noteworthy upgrades:
  • JMP Securities upgraded Acadia Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ACAD) to Strong Buy from Market Outperform, citing increased confidence in the company's pimavanserin for combination treatment of schizophrenia.
  • Genesis Microchip (NASDAQ: GNSS) was upgraded to Hold from Underperform at Jefferies to reflect the acquisition by STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM). The firm does not expect additional competitive offers.
  • SAFECO (NYSE: SAF) was upgraded to Market Perform from Underperform at Friedman Billings based on improved outlook and valuation.

The Financial Times reported Tuesday that Citigroup (NYSE: C) has trimmed its structured investment vehicles by more than $15 billion since October.

STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), rival to Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN), announced it is buying video-chip maker Genesis Microchip (NASDAQ: GNSS) for $336 million. The deal pays $8.55 a share, a 60% premium on Genesis' closing price Monday.

Home lender Freddie Mac (NYSE: FRE), has adopted stricter limits and broader guidelines for when it will buy out delinquent loans from mortgage pools.

Speaking in Tokyo on Tuesday, Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE) Chief Executive Officer Howard Stringer said the electronics maker plans to network its PlayStation 3 video game console and its other electronics in 2008.

Analyst downgrades 2-22-07: SanDisk & ValueClick downgraded today

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Pharmion Corp (PHRM), Genesis Microchip (GNSS) and SanDisk Corp (SNDK) were some of today's most notable downgrades:
  • Pharmion Corp (NASDAQ: PHRM) was downgraded to Sell from Source of Funds at ThinkEquity, citing valuation.
  • Matrix USA downgraded Genesis Microchip Inc (NASDAQ: GNSS) to Strong Sell from Hold to reflect a share decline in revenues; they also believe shares are overvalued relative to the sector.
  • SanDisk Corp (NASDAQ: SNDK) was cut to Hold from Buy at WR Hambrecht. The firm said it has learned that a crack in the IP story has occurred, as Samsung has found a way to significantly reduce its royalty payments to SanDisk on its finished SD cards that it is currently shipping. The firm said this step by Samsung puts at risk ~15% of SanDisk royalty revenues as early as Q2:07, as Samsung is no longer willing to pay the 8% royalty rate to SanDisk on NAND MLC SD cards.
OTHER DOWNGRADES:
  • Stephens downgraded Group 1 Automotive Inc (NYSE: GPI) to Equal Weight from Overweight following disappointing Q1 results.
  • JMP Securities downgraded Flanders Corp (NASDAQ: FLDR) to Market Perform from Outperform.
  • Oppenheimer cut ValueClick Inc (NASDAQ: VCLK) to Neutral from Buy on valuation.
  • Matrix USA downgraded L-1 Identity Solutions (NYSE: ID) to Sell from Buy on valuation.
  • Goldman took Medco Health Solutions Inc (NYSE: MHS) off its Conviction Buy List, citing valuation.
  • Raymond James lowered Hiland Holdings (NASDAQ: HPGP) rating to Outperform from Strong Buy.
  • JP Morgan cut Waters Corp (NYSE: WAT) to Neutral from Overweight based on valuation.

MOST NOTEWORTHY: Genesis Microchip Inc (GNSS), Columbia Sportswear Co (COLM) and Gentex Corp (GNTX) were today's most notable downgrades:
  • Genesis Microchip Inc (NASDAQ: GNSS) was downgraded to Sell from Hold at Roth Capital, citing the loss of significant market share, and to Market Weight from Overweight at Thomas Weisel following the company's disappointing earnings report.
  • Columbia Sportswear Co (NASDAQ: COLM) was downgraded to Sell from Hold at Matrix USA based on valuation.
  • Calyon downgraded Gentex Corp (NASDAQ: GNTX) to Sell from Neutral.

OTHER DOWNGRADES:
  • Following the company's fourth-quarter report, Buckingham downgraded International Flavors & Fragrances Inc (NYSE: IFF) to Neutral from Accumulate.
  • Bank of America downgraded Clear Channel Communications Inc (NYSE: CCU) to Neutral from Outperform with a $37 target, as shares are pricing a best-case scenario of a deal and sees downside risk if the deal falls apart.
  • Following fourth-quarter results and reduced guidance, Friedman Billings downgraded shares of Phelps Dodge Corp (NYSE: PD) to Market Perform from Outperform with a $125 target.
