THQ Inc. (
THQI) reported earnings for the fiscal second quarter last week. How does the stock look after the numbers?
Well, to begin with, we're dealing with an equity that is priced in the single digits. At the time of this writing, shares were exchanging hands for $4.14. The 52-week low is $3.33 while the 52-week high is $8.29. As can be seen from the
chart, the stock has basically collapsed since peaking back in April. If you look at the corporate
press release detailing the Q2 data, you may understand what all the bearishness is about. On a non-
GAAP basis, the loss per share widened to 60 cents compared to a loss of 37 cents in the year-ago period. Also, the top line experienced a decline.

GameStop (
GME) has its issues. The video-game business isn't as unambiguously hot as it was before, and the future of physical media is in doubt as we continue to move deeper into the digital age. But there are reports out today that might be more troubling than those topics.
Inarguably, the big element of this retailer's business model is its used-game strategy. Players love to visit their local GameStop locations to trade in console software or to buy software that someone else gave back (sometimes they may even do both). But what if the company were suddenly to be disallowed from engaging the practice? Would that ruin the prospects for shareholder value?

Bookstores disappearing, music stores almost gone, video stores all but done -- and GameStop Corp. (GME) is next. Yes, it's days are numbered, we just don't know what that number is yet.
I have been pondering this for a while, off and on, and did a very limited survey of two teenage boys -- mine -- asking them their thoughts about GameStop. The 17-year-old was playing a game on his Apple (AAPL) MacBook Pro at the time. He said he downloads free games or buys them, but all from the Web. He knew he could buy used games inexpensively at GameStop but had never done so and thought this business activity would fade.
The 14-year-old was also on his Mac, using FaceBook and YouTube. He said he had been to GameStop with friends in the past but never bought anything. Both boys use their cell phones to play games in the car.

GameStop (GME), which has jumped in price after announcing a stock buyback, is a new recommendation from John Reese, whose portfolio holds are based on screens developed to reflect the investment strategies of some of the stock's markets most successful investors.
The editor of Validea explains, "This recommendation is based on the P/E/ Growth Investor strategy of Peter Lynch.
"GameStop is a retailer of video game products and personal computer (PC) entertainment software. The company sells new and used video game hardware, video game software and accessories, as well as PC entertainment software, and related accessories and other merchandise.

GameStop (
GME) got destroyed during yesterday's trading session. Sure, some of the sell-off was undoubtedly linked to the overall bearishness of the markets, but I think Wall Street was nevertheless unhappy with the stock itself. Players just didn't appreciate the second-quarter results.
When you fail to beat the analysts, institutions can be tough. According to the
Associated Press, the video-game chain made 26 cents per share. This figure was one penny less than expectations. A penny may not sound like much, but the company's shares closed down over 8% to $19.06 on Thursday; volume was heavy.

Activision Blizzard (ATVI) has had a rocky ride over the last year. The following chart illustrates the sideways motion of the video-game superstar's stock. The 52-week range has been a narrow one: the low is $9.93, and the high is $13. Lately, the shares have received a new burst of energy after falling to the $10 level in May. At the time of this writing (it's a little over one hour until the market closes up shop), a quote of $12.02 went by on my screen.
A catalyst currently exists for the publisher. StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty is set to be released on Tuesday. This is the highly-anticipated game from the Blizzard portion of the company. And when I say highly-anticipated, I mean it.

I remember 15 years ago, I rarely felt more satisfied than when I sold an unwanted CD for a decent price (still looking for someone to take that Spin Doctors album off my hands). It was also a rush to score a CD that was new (and cheap) to me, even if it had been dismissed by its former owner. That business may have suffered a precipitous fall, the trade of used goods continues to thrive among the gaming community.
Gamestop (GME) makes much of its business (27% in the last quarter, to be exact) in the used trade, and it makes good business sense. Once a consumer buys a title from, say, Electronic Arts (ERTS), the publisher has made its money. The profit from used discs goes to the seller and the middle man (which happens to be Gamestop). While used games comprised just 27% of Gamestop sales last quarter, they made up 48% of the company's gross profit.

Oh, GameStop (
GME) is one tough stock for me to look at, let me tell you. Earlier in the year, I took a
lousy loss on it, only to see the shares
rebound. After the rebound, they started to go down again. And now, with international issues destroying the markets, there's added confusion following the release of the company's first-quarter report.
The chart, as they say, says it all. Over the last
twelve months, the stock has confounded the traders (well, maybe I should just speak for myself and say it's confounded me). There's been no solid direction to the shares as players attempt to figure out exactly where the business model is going. Can it withstand the threat of games-by-download? Can it compete with the casual titles people play on mobile platforms? And what about Best Buy Co., Inc. (
BBY), Target Corporation (
TGT), and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. (
WMT)? They want their share of the industry, too. As an example, Wal-Mart wants to engage
used entertainment software.
