So far today the stock has hit a low of $16.98 and a high of $17.65. As of 10:45, GPS is trading at $17.63, up $0.72 (4.3%).

After rising between March and June, the stock has been falling sharply during the month of July. As Zac Bissonnette noted yesterday evening, the company has appointed a new CEO, and investors are taking this as very good news today. The stock was upgraded by Citigroup this morning to a buy on the basis that the company's newly appointed CEO Glenn Murphy developed a record of "redefining customer in-store experience" while heading Canada's Shoppers Drugs Mart. Citigroup feels as though Murphy will bring the same ability to drive growth to Gap that he was able to achieve in his previous job. Technical indicators for GPS are bullish but deteriorating, while S&P gives the stock a negative 2 STARS (out of 5) sell rating.

For a bullish hedged play on this stock, I would consider a December bull-put credit spread below the $15 range. A bull-put credit spread is an options position that combines the purchase and sale of put options to hedge risk and leverage returns. For this particular trade, we will make an 11.1% return in just 5 months as long as GPS is above $15 at December expiration. GPS would have to fall by more than 13% before we would start to lose money.

GPS hasn't been below $15 at all in the past year and has shown support around $16.90 recently. This trade could be risky if GPS continues to disappoint investors, but even if that happens, the new CEO could get a little leeway for a while to turn the company around.

Brent Archer is an options analyst and writer at Investors Observer.

New Gap CEO cause for upgrade and optimism originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 27 Jul 2007 11:50:00 EST. I had a meeting with a British portfolio manager, James, who partially specializes in US retailers. He is the co-manager of a $3 billion US growth fund for a major mutual fund company based in London. He travels to the US five to six times per year to visit companies and attend various growth conferences. He is an absolute seller of the Gap Inc. (NYSE:GPS) and is using those dollars to buy and add to his Nike Inc. (NYSE:NKE) position.

As a quick backdrop, I wrote in my book "Stop Losing Money Today" about various companies that serve a niche market, or a fad market; and companies that become absolute phenomenons. One such company that I highlighted was Nike. Nike began as a niche sneaker maker/marketer that migrated to a fad during the "joggers" period of the 70's to an outright phenomenon in the 90's as it expanded its products to apparel, shoes for men and women, and opened its extensive retail stores. Today Nike sells over $16 billion worth of merchandise.

The Gap, on the other hand, has become a has-been concept in the retail world. The distribution channels are massive for the Gap, with over 3,000 outlets representing the Gap Stores, Banana Republic and Old Navy. But they have miscalculated the fickle consumer and underestimated the competition from players like Abercrombie and Fitch. The Gap has had senior management issues (never a good sign) and has retained a senior search firm to find a new CEO. The holiday season was very disappointing for the Gap concepts.

At one time in the 1990's, the Gap Stores "was it". They owned the teenage and twenty-something markets. They really infused the nation with the comfort and casual look. But eventually, the Gap became an old and passe concept and did not keep up with changing tastes and trends.

Nike has led the athletic apparel and footwear market and has withstood the fierce competition from Russell, Adidas, Reebok and now the hot manufacturer Under Armour (NYSE:UA). Nike has consistently portrayed an image of quality yet cutting edge. Nike realized early on that the decision makers for footwear and apparel are teenagers, not parents, and they aligned themselves with major university athletic programs. The brilliance of Nike was to open the retail stores as they can control all aspects of the purchase. Customers coming in to buy a pair of shoes, invariably walk out with t-shirts and other accessories added to the purchase.

Nike has never sat pat on any of their footwear or apparel lines. They are constantly tweaking the offerings and keeping them fresh and appealing. Interestingly, both Gap and Nike sell about $16 billion of merchandise annually, but Nike is growing and solid, while Gap is struggling and unfocused.

James did confess to me that he wears Reebok shoes himself!!

(NYSE:GPS) said net sales of $1.40 billion in November was a 2% decrease from the year-ago November sales month. With holiday shopping already at full-throttle by November, this strikes me as odd. The Gap also reported an 8% decrease in same-store sales this November, compared with half the amount, or 4% reported for the same period last year.

I was traveling at the end of November and saw a Gap store brimming with sales, long lines and stressed clerks, so at least one store in the Midwest seemed to be doing well. I think Gap's Old Navy division was doing more business, but the combined results still pour into a single company balance sheet.

With clothing retailers Kohl's and J.C.Penneys showing results that pumped up same-store sales results for November, I guess Gap's clothing-only business didn't fare as well as the department store approach.

When these numbers were released, Sabrina Simmons, senior vice president of corporate finance at The Gap Inc. said, "Overall, November was a challenging month as negative traffic trends persisted .. promotional and markdown activities at Gap and Old Navy drove total company merchandise margins below last year, and we expect pressure on merchandise margins to continue into December."

The Gap, Inc. same-store sales plunge in November originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 07 Dec 2006 15:00:00 EST.
