(<a class="inlinked" href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/garmin-ltd/grmn/nas">GRMN</a>) said it <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSSGE6BM09820101223">lost a patent dispute</a> with Japanese firm Pioneer Corp. Can the company continue its growth? Or is the industry maturing and suffering from new players, like Google (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/google-inc/goog/nas">GOOG</a>)?<br />
<br />
Unfortunately, things are not looking so good. On news of the of Garmin's Q1 <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/news/2010-05-05/garmin-drops-after-earnings-miss-analysts-estimates-update2-.html">report</a>, the shares are off 5.82% to $35.30. Although, the losses have improved from a daily low of $31.99. In other words, there's much investor uncertainty with the stock.<br />

(<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/garmin-ltd/grmn/nas">GRMN</a>) topped analysts' fourth-quarter earnings expectations this morning, but the GPS guru opened with a thud after warning that it expects both <a href="http://www.dividend.com/blog/?p=19056">gross and operating margins</a> to decline in fiscal 2010. "The margin declines will be primarily driven by an ongoing price decline of approximately 10 percent in the [personal navigation device] industry and increasing R&amp;D investment across our segments," said the company in a statement.</p>
<p>Aside from that cautious note, Garmin's fourth-quarter results and forward-looking guidance were actually much more robust than Wall Street expected. The firm swung to a quarterly profit of $1.43 per share, excluding items, compared to analysts' consensus forecast of 95 cents per share. Gross margin ticked four percentage points higher to 46%, while revenue arrived at $1.06 billion.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/24/garmin-gaps-lower-on-margin-warning/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Garmin Gaps Lower on Margin Warning</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/24/garmin-gaps-lower-on-margin-warning/">Garmin Gaps Lower on Margin Warning</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 24 Feb 2010 10:30:00 EST. (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/google-inc/goog/nas">GOOG</a>) realizes that the mobile market is a must-win proposition. To this end, the company has been aggressive with M&amp;A -- such as its $750 million <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/09/google-gets-mobile-with-a-750-million-deal-for-admob/">acquisition</a> for AdMob -- as well as technologies, like Android, and a high-end handset, Nexus One.<br />
<br />
Another disruptive move was to make GPS navigation free. Obviously, this was a major jolt to the industry as billions of dollars in market values got vaporized.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/21/nokia-goes-free-with-navigation/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nokia Goes Free with Navigation</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/21/nokia-goes-free-with-navigation/">Nokia Goes Free with Navigation</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 21 Jan 2010 17:00:00 EST. Maybe they wanted more than a <a href="http://247wallst.com/2009/10/28/durable-goods-something-for-everyone/">marginally positive durable goods</a> reading. Maybe it was that <a href="http://247wallst.com/2009/10/28/doe-oil-inventories-back-up-oih-dig-uso-oil/">oil inventory is back up</a>. And then there is the notion that stocks have just gotten too far ahead of themselves and there were reports of a large strategist cutting GDP targets. But investors sold religiously today ahead of tomorrow's GDP figure. <br /><br />Here were today's closing bell levels:<br /><br />Dow 9,762.69 -119.48 (-1.21%) <br />S&amp;P 500 1,042.63 -20.78 (-1.95%) <br />Nasdaq 2,059.61 -56.48 (-2.67%)<br /><br /><a href="http://247wallst.com/2009/10/28/top-10-analyst-upgrades-downgrades-initiations-aks-apol-bp-crdn-rx-sndk-sti-tgt-txn-wynn/">Top 10 Analyst Calls</a><br /><a href="http://247wallst.com/2009/10/28/top-day-trader-alerts-amd-apol-etfc-ilmn-lvlt-pvtb/">Top Day Trader Alerts</a><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/10/28/closing-bell-the-big-giveback-adus-cit-grmn-ilmn-lvlt-pal/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Closing Bell: The big giveback (ADUS, CIT, GRMN, ILMN, LVLT, PALM)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/10/28/closing-bell-the-big-giveback-adus-cit-grmn-ilmn-lvlt-pal/">Closing Bell: The big giveback (ADUS, CIT, GRMN, ILMN, LVLT, PALM)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 28 Oct 2009 16:00:00 EST. Oil was down essentially 6% and broke under that $64.00 per barrel mark in NYMEX WTI Crude after <a href="http://247wallst.com/2009/07/29/oil-inventories-confirm-technical-event-in-etf-charts-uso-oil/">inventories showed a surge</a>. But this was based on the economy and on inventories, and this took stocks lower as a result of the current parallel between oil prices and stock prices. A <a href="http://247wallst.com/2009/07/29/fine-tuning-q2-gdp-expectations/">weak forecast for Friday's GDP</a> may be more important than a weak Durable Goods report and more important than the retroactive Beige Book. The good news for today is that the market could have been down much worse than what we saw. <br /><br />Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:<br /><br />Dow 9,070.72 -26.00 (-0.29%) <br />S&amp;P 500 975.15 -4.47 (-0.46%) <br />Nasdaq 1,967.76 -7.75 (-0.39%)<br /><br /><a href="http://247wallst.com/2009/07/29/top-10-analyst-upgrades-and-downgrades-afl-cpb-ecl-isis-mgm-ne-nsc-pery-ter-wdc/">Top Upgrades and Downgrades</a><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/07/29/closing-bell-the-day-oils-back-was-broken-cop-yhoo-msft-gt/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Closing Bell: The day Oil's back was broken (COP, YHOO, MSFT, GT, MS, GS, GRMN, TRMB)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/07/29/closing-bell-the-day-oils-back-was-broken-cop-yhoo-msft-gt/">Closing Bell: The day Oil's back was broken (COP, YHOO, MSFT, GT, MS, GS, GRMN, TRMB)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 29 Jul 2009 16:15:00 EST. <p>Here, the technology stock specialist and editor of <a href="http://www.thestockadvisors.com/ccount/click.php?id=2866 ">Next Inning</a> reviews the company and the prospects for its new entry in the cell phone market -- the nuvifone.</p>
<p>"As you would expect, the nuvifone is very GPS-centric with all sorts of Geo-tagging features for email, SMS and pictures. It also includes an Opera browser and is fully capable of viewing Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents and working with both personal and enterprise email systems.</p>
<p>"While I've not seen one in person yet, what I've heard from those who have and from what I've seen on the GRMN web site, I think the product has potential.</p>
<p>"The key, however, will be how the nuvifone is marketed and how well GRMN does in building an applications store, a factor that I think will be a huge differentiation driver as we move forward in the Smartphone sector.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/02/24/garmin-grmn-the-wildcard-is-nuvifone/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Garmin (GRMN): The wild card is nuvifone</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/02/24/garmin-grmn-the-wildcard-is-nuvifone/">Garmin (GRMN): The wild card is nuvifone</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Tue, 24 Feb 2009 12:10:00 EST. <p>There's no doubt about it -- times are tough. People are struggling to find work and to pay the bills as the value of their homes and savings dwindle. The poor get poorer, and the rich get richer. </p>
<p>Or do they? It's all relative, of course, but world's billionaires have been taking some big hits too.
