The price was higher than some analysts expected and is expected to negatively impact LH's earnings by 0.25 over the next year, which is sending LH stock lower today. If you think this stock won't be rising too far in the coming months, then it could be a good time to look at a bearish hedged play on LH.

ADHD Patch Helps Investors Focus on Shire

ShireThe Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently gave Shire Plc (SHPGY) shareholders something to smile about when it approved Daytrana for treating patients between 13 and 17 years who suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Daytrana is the only ADHD treatment that is available in a transdermal patch, which delivers methylphenidate through the skin into the bloodstream. It is already approved for use by patients between 6 and 12 years.

With this announcement, Shire -- which licensed Daytrana from Noven Pharmaceuticals -- stands to gain market share and increase revenues.

Closing Bell: Sneaking in a Win (AAPL, BP, GOOG, GLD, MU, GENZ)

Today was a fairly quiet trading day due to the notion that ISM showed a weaker than expected services spending economy. The other notion is that employment trends remained muted as a follow-on to last week's weak employment data. On an interesting side-bar, gold is losing its luster as a safety trade... probably because the price has become ridiculous in dollar terms and any other currency-related terms. A late day recovery kept most markets in the black for the day.

Here were the closing bell levels:

Dow 9,743.62 +57.14 (0.59%)
S&P 500 1,028.06 +5.48 (0.54%)
Nasdaq 2,093.88 +2.09 (0.10%)

Closing Bell: Bears Breathe Deep Late in Day (ABK, BBY, CAAS, C, LULU, GENZ)

Today's strength was there all day, although a late day drop on comments regarding Greece bailouts and profit taking may have created adding selling. The weekly jobless claims data is still showing many pink slips for workers, but the data continues to improve and the continuing jobless claims was the smallest reading since the end of 2008. This was a bull market trading day, but the bears coming alive at the end of the day made the markets an uncertain win or lose until the last minute of trading today.

Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow 10,841.52 +5.37 (0.05%)
S&P 500 1,165.77 -1.95 (-0.17%)

Closing Bell: Can't Win Every Day (ADBE, GENZ, SBUX, COP, GENT, S)

Blame a poor US Treasury auction, blame poor home sales data, or blame Portugal after a Fitch downgrade. Regardless, the markets needed a breather and may need even more of a breather ahead. Depending upon which stock indexes you track, we had been in a constant gain environment with the market up 10 of the past 11 days.

Genzyme: Unconvincing Rally

Not all of my stock picks work out. I first wrote about Genzyme Corp. (GENZ) on June 19, 2009, at a price of $55.02. In the fall 2009, Genzyme's technicals had deteriorated to the point that the stock chart formed a bear hug: a bearish pattern, and I noted at that time, I thought that the prudent stance in December was to stand aside.

After falling through key, psychological support at $50, Genzyme's shares found support at/near $47, and have since moved back above $50 and the key 50-day moving average. However, the rally has been less than impressive. The MACD Histogram, a measure of buying pressure and selling pressure is less than convincing: according to my analysis, there's not enough buying pressure. Hence, I'd take the roughly $3 gain.

Closing Bell: Jobs Giveth and Taketh Away (CYCC, QCOM, GS, LUV, PALM, GENZ)

Today needed a strong jobs number to keep traders interested and to keep traders and investors from taking profits. A 10% unemployment reading and a loss of 85,000 non-farm payrolls for December was not enough. The drop in the dollar earlier today (based on the FOMC being able to keep a zero-rate) may have been the only thing that kept more profit taking by stock trading from coming. Here were today's unofficial closing bell levels:

Dow 10,617.06 +10.20 (0.10%)
S&P 500 1,144.93 +3.24 (0.28%)
Nasdaq 2,317.17 +17.12 (0.74%)

Genzyme: Up ahead, an uptrend

Genzyne Corp.'s (NASDAQ: GENZ) stock has meandered since the June 19, 2009, Buy recommendation at $55.02, and it appears institutional investors have adopted a wait-and-see stance regarding the company.

Even so, I'm reiterating my Buy rating for GENZ. Here's why:
