Google's book-scanning project wins court battle in Germany
Google Book Search, the Internet giant's grand ambition to make the printed books of the world electronically-accessible to all, has snared a court victory in Germany. Google has remained adamant every since the Google Book Search project was publicly announced that it was not intended to smash copyrights of published works -- although foes have come out fighting Google Book Search as a copyright-infringing behemoth from the start.Although Google has sidestepped the German injunction from scanning in book contents to make them accessible via a Google search, this problem is one for Google that will not go away. As the Internet search giant continues its quest to make all the world's information available to everyone, everywhere, Google will continue to have plenty of foes worldwide who will shift into protection mode to ensure intellectual property and copyrights are not just reproducible at will for all the world to see at any time.
Google's knack at being a disruptive force in many industries will surely case it to face more and more lawsuits from many angles. Will this, over time, hurt Google's bottom line as it continues to settle lawsuits (financial settlements)? You be the judge, and if you hold GOOG shares, you be the intently-watching witness as well.
