Analyst downgrades: GPCB, AKAM, Q, SFLY and LDK

MOST NOTEWORTHY: GPC Biotech, Akamai, Qwest, Shutterfly and LDK Solar were today's noteworthy downgrades:
  • GPC Biotech (NASDAQ: GPCB) was downgraded to Sell from Neutral at Goldman, to Sell from Hold at Deutsche Bank and to Underweight from Overweight at Lehman after the company's phase III trial of satraplatin to treat prostate cancer did not meet its primary endpoint.
  • Deutsche Bank downgraded shares of Akamai Technologies (NASDAQ: AKAM) to Hold from Buy on valuation following the recent rally as they believe concerns around slowing growth, margins and capital efficiency will limit upside.
  • Qwest Communications (NYSE: Q) was downgraded to Sector Performer from Outperformer at CIBC and to Neutral from Overweight at JP Morgan following the company's disappointing Q3 results.
  • Jefferies downgraded shares of Shutterfly (NASDAQ: SFLY) following the better-than-expected Q3 results due to valuation.
  • Piper downgraded shares of LDK Solar (NYSE: LDK) to Market Perform from Outperform, as they expect higher blended poly cost for the company due to tightening scrap poly supply and increased competition.

Market highlights for next week: Home Depot (HD), Macy's (M) to report

Monday August 13
Tuesday August 14
  • The Home Depot Inc (NYSE: HD) to report Q2 earnings; conference call at 9am. Home Depot is expected to post substantial Q2 revenue/EPS declines, but equally important will be the company's comments: with the housing sector expected to remain sluggish through at least late 2007, analysts will evaluate whether HD can overcome that headwind with a new focus on customer service, demographic trends that suggest increased home repair/remodeling, and 20-year high homeownership rates that suggest steady house goods demand.
  • District Court California: Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM) to request an injunction related to Qualcom Incorporated's (Nasdaq: QCOM) infringement of 3 Broadcom cellular baseband patents.
Wednesday August 15
  • Macy's Inc (NYSE: M) to report Q2 earnings; conference call at 10:30am.
  • PDUFA date for GPC Biotech's (NASDAQ: GPCB) Satraplatin for treatment of hormone refractory prostate cancer.
Thursday August 16
  • JC Penney Co Inc (NYSE: JCP) to report Q2 earnings; conference call at 9:30am.
  • Hewlett Packard Company (NYSE: HPQ) to report Q3 earnings; conference call at 5pm. Analysts will evaluate HPQ's ability to maintain momentum in its innovative imaging/printing group, which is expected to help HPQ post solid Q3 revenue gains.

Analyst initiations 12-28-06: CDC Corp, On2 Tech started with Buy ratings

MOST NOTEWORTHY: CDC Corporation topped today's modest list of initiations:
  • Shares of CDC Corp (NASDAQ:CHINA) were initiated by Oppenheimer with a Buy rating and $12 target, as the firm expects CDC to unlock shareholder value by spinning off its software and games business into separately traded companies in the first-half of 2007.
OTHER INITIATIONS:
  • On2 Technologies (AMEX:ONT) was initiated with a Buy rating and $1.40 target at ThinkEquity, and the firm believes that On2 will capitalize on its continued success in Flash, also noting that Adobe Systems (NASDAQ:ADBE) licenses the company video codec in its Flash player 8.
  • Soleil believes Middleby Corp (NASDAQ:MIDD) is positioned to benefit from switching to more energy-efficient models in restaurants from the current equipment, and has initiated the Illinois-based company with a Buy rating and $134 target.
  • Deutsche Bank initiated GPC Biotech AG (NASDAQ:GPCB) with a Buy rating; they believe shares could double in a best-case scenario.
