Most people are caught up with holiday shopping and tend to put off large purchases.</p>
<p>This year was different. December auto sales were higher for most makers, Toyota being the exception. Republicans are poised to gain control of the House of Representatives and gain governorships in Tuesday's mid-term elections. Also, the Federal Reserve is expected to announce another round of <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Quantitative%20Easing">quantitative easing</a> Wednesday, following the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/Federal%20Open%20Market%20Committee%20-%20FOMC" target="_blank">FOMC</a> meeting. Major retailers are scheduled to report October <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/glossary/same%20store%20sales" target="_blank">same-store sales</a> Thursday, while the October unemployment rate, announced on Friday, is expected to remain at 9.6%.</p>
<p>Toyota's (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/toyota-motor-corporation/tm/nys" class="inlinked" target="_blank">TM</a>) fiscal second-quarter results will be one of the highlights on the <a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/category/earnings/" class="inlinked" target="_blank">earnings</a> front this week. After three periods of way underestimating Toyota's earnings, have the analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters got it right this time? The stock sure could use a boost. Teva Pharmaceuticals (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/teva-pharmaceutical-industries-limited-american-depositary-shares/teva/nas" class="inlinked" target="_blank">TEVA</a>) is in a similar situation; i.e., high expectations for this week's quarterly results but a stock in need of a boost. Marathon (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/marathon-oil-corporation/mro/nys" class="inlinked" target="_blank">MRO</a>) and Starbucks (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/starbucks-corporation/sbux/nas" class="inlinked" target="_blank">SBUX</a>) are also expected to post strong earnings growth this week, but both stocks are riding high.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/31/week-in-preview-election-qe2-employment-and-more-earnings/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Week in Preview: Election, QE2, Unemployment and More Earnings</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/10/31/week-in-preview-election-qe2-employment-and-more-earnings/">Week in Preview: Election, QE2, Unemployment and More Earnings</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 31 Oct 2010 12:30:00 EST. Ignore the rearview mirror; put it in drive and move forward. At least the dismal year ended on a high note. Despite a total sales decline of 21.2%, to 10.4 million units, the industry gets to celebrate a 15.1% increase in sales for the month of December, according to Autodata.</p>
<p>For the Detroit crowd, Ford (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/ford-motor-company/f/nys" target="_blank">F</a>) led the pack, with December sales up almost a third. General Motors (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/general-motors-corp-1-5percent-prf-ser-d/grm/nys" target="_blank">GRM</a>) ticked 5.7% higher, with Chrysler up 3.7% for the month.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/06/auto-sales-surge-in-december-capping-dismal-year/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Auto Sales Surge in December, Capping Dismal Year</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/01/06/auto-sales-surge-in-december-capping-dismal-year/">Auto Sales Surge in December, Capping Dismal Year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 06 Jan 2010 09:30:00 EST. That is, the Japanese automaker is running after hydrogen fuel-cell technology instead of battery-powered electric propulsion technology, which is the mainstay of current hybrid vehicles and upcoming all-electric vehicles.</p>
<p>Honda's fuel-cell development chief, <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601109&amp;sid=atHH0LYy6MYA">Takashi Moriya</a>, said that "Fuel-cell cars will become necessary ... we're positioning it as the ultimate zero-emission car." Why is Honda pursuing fuel-cell technology instead of electric motor technology? Does Honda believe battery technology won't ever satisfy the ever-growing demand for completely gasoline-free engine designs in the next decade? Possibly. Right now, a major drawback to electric vehicles is battery longevity and cost.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/08/13/honda-no-battery-powered-cars-for-us-well-use-hydrogen/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Honda: No battery-powered cars for us; we'll use hydrogen</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/08/13/honda-no-battery-powered-cars-for-us-well-use-hydrogen/">Honda: No battery-powered cars for us; we'll use hydrogen</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Thu, 13 Aug 2009 11:40:00 EST. The 64-year-old Fukui said, about passing the job to his 55-year-old successor, "It is very important to have a generational change in management every few years." It will be a challenging post for Ito, who assumes the reins as Honda and the overall auto industry face falling sales. The company is expecting an earnings loss of nearly 90% this year to $860 million (but at least they are still hoping to turn a profit). <br /><br />Putting it mildly, it has been a turbulent time in the auto industry. <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/toyota-motor-corporation/tm/nys">Toyota Motor Corp.</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/toyota-motor-corporation/tm/nys" target="_blank">TM</a>) replaced its president in January. Mazda announced changes in management in November. And Nissan president has delegated some of his responsibilities of late. Meanwhile, on American soil ... well, we all know the saga the Big-Three is facing. <br /> <br /><em>Beth Gaston Moon works for <a href="http://www.weseed.com" target="_blank">WeSeed.com</a>, "The stock market for the rest of us."
