Both can be found in the foodstuffs industry. And both beat Wall Street's projections. But which one do I prefer?</p>
<p>Hormel Foods (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/hormel-foods-corporation/hrl/nys">HRL</a>), the company behind the Spam and Dinty Moore brands, made 63 cents per share in the fiscal third quarter, which, according to <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE67J23Q20100820">Reuters</a>, was three pennies ahead of the estimate. But the good news doesn't stop there: guidance for the full fiscal year was increased.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/21/hormel-and-smucker-earnings/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Two Quarterly Reports: Hormel and Smucker</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/08/21/hormel-and-smucker-earnings/">Two Quarterly Reports: Hormel and Smucker</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sat, 21 Aug 2010 09:40:00 EST. Now isn't the time to be too aggressive. With that in mind, here are five stocks that made our column dedicated to conservative investors.</p>
<p><strong>Avista Corp.</strong> (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/avista-corporation/ava/nys">AVA</a>): an energy company, engaged in the generation, transmission, and distribution of energy and energy-related businesses in the United States and Canada. You would think, considering all the scary volatility going on in the markets right now, that a stock like Hormel Foods (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/hormel-foods-corporation/hrl/nys">HRL</a>) would be trading higher today. Investors would theoretically want to get defensive and hedge themselves against all the bearish sentiment with an equity based on something everyone needs to do: eat!<br />
<br />
But it's not working that way this afternoon. Hormel is down $1.19, or nearly 2.9%, to $40.59 on decent volume. Traders apparently were not impressed with the second-quarter earnings report.<p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/19/hormel-down-on-q2-news/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Hormel Down on Q2 News</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/05/19/hormel-down-on-q2-news/">Hormel Down on Q2 News</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Wed, 19 May 2010 15:30:00 EST. And the world's largest retailer is among those that step into the spot light this week.</p>
<p>Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters are looking for <strong>Wal-Mart Stores Inc.</strong> (<a href="http://www.dailyfinance.com/quotes/wal-mart-stores-inc/wmt/nys">WMT</a>), which was aggressively competitive during the <a href="http://money.aol.com/rtn/pr/walmart-stuffs-thanksgiving-weekend-with-three-days-of-savings/rfid273500164?channel=pf">holiday shopping</a> season and also recently announced <a href="http://money.aol.com/rtn/pr/walmart-leverages-global-scale-to-lower-costs-of-goods-accelerate-speed-to-market-improve-quality-of-products/rfid293743076?channel=pf">a new global strategy</a>, to report fourth-quarter earnings of $1.12 per share, up from $1.03 per share in the year-ago period. Revenue for the three months that ended in January is expected to have risen 4.9% to $114.5 billion. The full-year forecast calls for earnings of $3.61 per share (+5.3%) on $409.1 billion in revenue (+0.9%). Walmart has not missed earnings estimates in the past five quarters.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/14/the-week-in-preview-a-first-look-at-retail-walmart-jcpenney-a/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Week in Preview: A First Look at Retail: Walmart, JCPenney and Others</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2010/02/14/the-week-in-preview-a-first-look-at-retail-walmart-jcpenney-a/">The Week in Preview: A First Look at Retail: Walmart, JCPenney and Others</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 14 Feb 2010 12:30:00 EST. In each one, there are one or two elements that make a successful investment. For example, interest rates are always a concern for financial institutions or companies that borrow a large amount of money. For these groups, the higher interest rates go, the lower profits will most likely be unless they are able to raise prices and/or cut costs faster than interest rates rise.</p>
<p>Right now, the main focus for most investors should be revenues. That's because without increasing revenues, there is an absolute amount of profits that any company can achieve. Simply by cutting costs, a company can increase profits, up to a point. But eventually lowering expenses isn't enough because there are only so many costs that can be cut before a product or service begins to weaken and affect sales.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/28/comfort-zone-investing-its-the-revenues-that-count/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Comfort Zone Investing: It's the revenues that count</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/28/comfort-zone-investing-its-the-revenues-that-count/">Comfort Zone Investing: It's the revenues that count</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sat, 28 Nov 2009 10:30:00 EST. And analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters don't seem to be expecting too many turkeys among this week's bunch.</p>
<p>Leading U.S. meat processor <strong>Tyson Foods Inc.</strong> (<a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/tyson-foods-inc/tsn/nys">TSN</a>), which has just named a <a href="http://www.thestreet.com/_aol/story/10629015/1/tyson-names-new-president-coo.html">new chief executive officer</a> and a new chief operating officer, is expected to report fiscal fourth-quarter earnings of $0.26 per share, up from $0.14 in the same period of last year. But revenue is expected to total $6.9 billion, or 4.3% less than a year ago. The full-year forecast is for a profit of $0.25 per share (-16.7) on $26.4 billion (-3.9%) in sales. This dividend payer has offered upside surprises in the past two quarters, topping estimates by 11 cents per share in the third quarter.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/22/the-week-in-preview-no-turkey-earnings-from-tyson-hormel-crac/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The week in preview: No turkey earnings from Tyson, Hormel, Cracker Barrel ...</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/11/22/the-week-in-preview-no-turkey-earnings-from-tyson-hormel-crac/">The week in preview: No turkey earnings from Tyson, Hormel, Cracker Barrel ...</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 22 Nov 2009 12:30:00 EST. The company's second-quarter earnings release is driving the buying. According to this <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/marketsnews/idAFN0437134020090504?rpc=33&amp;sp=true">article</a>, Tyson reported an adjusted loss of $0.05 per share. The market was expecting a loss of $0.06 per share. So I guess the market was pretty happy about that.
<p>Wall Street was probably encouraged by something else as well. If you take a look at the actual <a href="http://money.aol.com/news/articles/qp/pr/_a/tyson-reports-second-quarter-and-six/rfid210143801">release</a>, head on down to the statement of <a href="http://finance.aol.com/glossary/cash%20flow">cash flows</a>. Last year at this time, Tyson generated $144 million in cash from operations during the six-month period. This year, the company made $407 million from operations. Some nice changes in <a href="http://finance.aol.com/glossary/working%20capital">working capital</a> helped out. </p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/05/04/tyson-beats-estimates-stock-rallies-can-you-buy-now/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Tyson beats estimates, stock rallies -- can you buy now?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/05/04/tyson-beats-estimates-stock-rallies-can-you-buy-now/">Tyson beats estimates, stock rallies -- can you buy now?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Mon, 04 May 2009 15:30:00 EST. But it may be the only one that does, as at least two of the Canadian banks scheduled to report fourth-quarter numbers this week have already released preliminary results that warn of lower earnings due to debt write-downs and trading losses.</p>
<p>Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expect Toronto-based <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/canadian-imperial-bank-of-commerce/cm/nys">Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/canadian-imperial-bank-of-commerce/cm/nys">CM</a>) to post earnings 42.6% lower than a year ago, or $1.28 per share. CIBC beat estimates by a penny in the third quarter, but missed by a penny in the period before that. The bank faces <a href="http://money.aol.com/news/articles/qp/pr/_a/brower-piven-encourages-investors-who/rfid144942732">a class-action lawsuit</a> related to investments in collateralized debt obligations consisting of U.S. subprime mortgages. Shares have climbed 20.7% from a recent 52-week low of $39.52, but are down 37.8% in the past three months. </p>
<p><a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-toronto-dominion-bank/td/nys">Toronto Dominion Bank</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/the-toronto-dominion-bank/td/nys">TD</a>), <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/bank-of-nova-scotia-halifax/bns/nys">Bank of Nova Scotia</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/bank-of-nova-scotia-halifax/bns/nys">BNS</a>), and <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/royal-bk-cda-montreal-que/ry/nys">Royal Bank of Canada</a> (NYSE: <a href="http://finance.aol.com/quotes/royal-bk-cda-montreal-que/ry/nys">RY</a>) are expected to report more modest earnings declines of $1.01 per share, $0.73 per share, and $0.83 per share, respectively. All three Toronto-based banks topped estimates in the third quarter. Toronto Dominion and RBC have recently announced plans to <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/marketsnews/idCAN2452730420081124?rpc=33">offer shares in order to raise capital</a>. Toronto Dominion and Scotiabank have been trading near 52-week lows, and their share prices are down around 39% in the past three months. But only Toronto Dominion has a consensus buy recommendation from analysts.</p><p><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/11/30/the-week-in-preview-canadian-banks-homebuilders-sears-and-foo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The week in preview: Canadian banks, homebuilders, Sears and food producers</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2008/11/30/the-week-in-preview-canadian-banks-homebuilders-sears-and-foo/">The week in preview: Canadian banks, homebuilders, Sears and food producers</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.bloggingstocks.com">BloggingStocks</a> on Sun, 30 Nov 2008 12:30:00 EST.
