New York-based Interpublic Group of Companies (NYSE: IPG) is a marketing services firm, but they're not your average PR hucksters. Flip through IPG's resume, and you'll find that they were once tapped as the "brand steward" for Coca-Cola Classic. Is there a more solemn task in the world of marketing? Perhaps -- Coke also handed IPG the reins on Cherry Coke, but jealously guarded its Sprite brand from the mega-marketer's grasp.

What went wrong? At number 22 on our list of SPX underperformers, IPG lost 72% of its value from June 30, 1998 through June 30, 2008. The worst of the stock's woes occurred during the first several years after the turn of the millennium. A broad economic slowdown led many clients to trim their spending on advertising, and -- as one of four "megacompanies" that essentially ruled Madison Avenue -- IPG couldn't help but feel the pinch.

Even as the marketing behemoth faced down this fundamental challenge, an accounting fiasco caused the company to restate six years' worth of financial results. Interpublic soon found itself facing a formal investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission, along with an IRS audit over the small matter of $41.5 million in unpaid taxes.

Continue reading Worst 10-year performers: Interpublic Group of Companies kicks its Coke habit

Worst 10-year performers: Interpublic Group of Companies kicks its Coke habit originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Sat, 26 Jul 2008 07:00:00 EST. The move is a blow to Interpublic (NYSE: IPG), which had been working to get the account.

The relationship between the PC company and ad agency will be set up as a partnership. The Wall Street Journal writes, "Sir Martin Sorrell, chief executive of WPP, said it would take WPP and Dell roughly three to six months to build the new firm, which will start with about 1,000 employees. Dell management around the world will have to give up local ad ties."

But, the manner in which the deal was cut says a lot about what is wrong with Dell. Picking the new agency took almost three quarters. And it will take almost another quarter to set it up. That means that the PC company's marketing plans will have been in flux for almost a year. With all of Dell's problems, the company can hardly afford to spread significant decisions over such a long period.

It is good that Dell has finally made a decision, but it is very bad that it does not have processes in place to speed getting to the finish line on such critical problems.

This is where he follows up on his wins and losses.

On Coldwater Creek (NASDAQ:CWTR), he slapped it and said he needs to eat crow. It's down 20% in after-hours because of an earnings warning. Here is what he originally said.

On Guess Inc (NYSE:GES), he thinks the stock deserved a triple-buy before, but it's time to take profits. At $53.95 on October 9, 2006 is where he first started calling it. If you own it, ring the register.

On XM Satellite Radio Holdings (NASDAQ:XMSR), the analyst upped it at $30 and cut it at $11; Cramer thought it was a buy before, but it's time to ring the register -- he thinks that there isn't upside here and the FCC flip-flop means it's time to ring the register. I noted this today because no one was commenting that the FCC could change its rule if it wanted to.

On Interpublic Group (NYSE:IPG), he said they barely skipped a beat on losing Wal-Mart Stores (NYSE:WMT) but it's time to sell it and take the 30% gain even if it can go up.

On Deere & Co (NYSE:DE), he said it was a buy in September, but he thinks it's time to sell. It's been looking secular and deserves the multiple, but they have to beat big-time to go over $108.00.

Jon C. 's (NYSE:WMT) head of advertising gone along with another marketing exec from the world's largest retailer, the company -- as widely expected -- has booted its brand-new ad agency, just a few months before work was to begin in its effort to revitalize the image and sales of the world's largest retailer.

The ad agency, which is Chicago-based DraftFCB and a division of the Interpublic Group of Companies, Inc. (NYSE:IPG) -- won a very nice $570 million deal with the ad account of Wal-Mart just this year -- but it's gone now. The world's largest retailer dropped DraftFCB just two days after the exit of Julie Roehm, who was Wal-Mart's head of advertising.

Why did Wal-Mart just completely shake up it entire ad department and ad agency so suddenly? The company's decision to take the account back from DraftFCB "is the result of new information we have obtained over the past few weeks," according to the company. Hmm -- I wonder what that super-secret information was? Julie Roehm has been accused of accepting gifts from ad agencies and having an improper relationship with a subordinate. In addition, when Wal-Mart selects a new agency, DraftFCB won't be eligible to compete for the account.
Wal-Mart dismisses ad firm that it just hired recently originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 08 Dec 2006 11:04:00 EST.
