Signs are beginning to trickle out from analysts who examine the flow of merchandise coming out of Apple Computer, Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) that Apple is already well into an expectations-beating holiday quarter. Just this November it's estimated that some 300,000 MacBooks have moved off the shelves.

Clearly the Zune is not going to challenge iPod holiday sales. At best it's come a distant second, with some claiming that the Zune is sinking from that spot if you monitor Amazon interest as a benchmark. Even if Zune beats out the iPod in years to come, it won't be happening this Christmas season. iPod and particularly iPod Shuffle sales will probably be as strong as any other holiday season.

And then there's a surprising X-factor. Needham & Company's analyst Charles Wolf thinks they've been too conservative about the effect of switchers to Apple due to Apple's ability to run Windows as well using Bootcamp. As a result Needham's target price for Apple has been raised from $90 to $115 to take it into account.

Despite the launch of the new Microsoft Zune for the holiday season, Piper Jaffray is estimating that some 14-15 million iPods are going to roll off the shelves this winter. Gene Munster, the Apple guru over at Piper Jaffray, has taken a look at early October sales data and thinks Apple's iPod sales are trending positive. Very positive.

Even more positive is that the above sales analysis doesn't take into account the very stocking-friendly iPod Shuffle. Under $100, tiny enough to clip onto a belt loop, one can bet a number of those will sell quite nicely.

The digital player market is heating up as the temperatures get lower.

Apple ended the day at $85.61, up $1.56, or 1.86%.

Apple's new iPod Shuffle will begin shipping at the end of the month, or 'within a couple weeks' according to the company at a recent quarterly earnings call. Apple Computer, Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL) announced the new version of its popular and affordable version of the iPod without a screen back in August. It's smaller than the regular shuffle, and it features a built in belt clip.

Two months is a bit long to have to wait on a product you've heard announced, but Apple is hardly the first company that announces things slightly ahead of time, this is business as usual. With a low price and the built in clip, this version of the iPod should do well with fitness enthusiasts and help boost the next quarter's iPod sales, particularly as the holiday season approaches.

Merrill Lynch analysts believe there will be a dip in iPod sales in Apple's third quarter. Last year saw a similar call by financial experts who expected a 'cooling' in iPod sales that never came. But the third quarter is usually a slow time for electronics sales. And the iPod nano hasn't been quite the hit expected, thanks to the screen-scratching mojo that dogged it right out of the gate.

But there's a silver lining. The Merrill analysts think the general Apple lineup of laptops and desktops will make up for the dip in iPod sales. And other analysts point out that iPod video sales, shuffles, and the low end nano, are all marching along just peachy.

And, judging by last year's track record for iPod sales, Apple may surprise the perpetual 'iPod sales cooling off' crowd just yet.
