Buyout Interest Heats Up for Sara Lee

Sara Lee (SLE)As the economy rebounds and credit markets warm up again, it looks like private equity firms are going back to work -- on big deals. According to Bloomberg.com, Apollo Global Management is prepared to offer $12 billion for Sara Lee (SLE). The transaction would also include investor C. Dean Metropoulos -- who bought Pabst Brewing in 2010 -- as well as Bain Capital and TPG.

It looks like this is a viable offer even though a strategic buyer is interested (which often can justify a higher valuation). This is JBS SA, a beef processor based in Brazil. An acquisition would certainly have lots of synergy, creating a vertical operation. Interestingly enough, JBS may seek the help of the Blackstone Group (BX).

Smithfield Foods Rises as Possible Takeover Target

SFD logoSmithfield Foods (SFD - option chain) shares are rising today as rumors have surfaced that the company may be an acquisition target for Brazilian meat titan JBS. If you think that the stock won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on SFD.

SFD opened this morning at $15.60. So far today the stock has hit a low of $15.28 and a high of $16.20. As of 12:15, SFD is trading at $15.34 up 0.46 (3.1%). The chart for SFD looks neutral and S&P gives SFD a neutral 3 STARS (out of 5) hold ranking.

Analyst upgrades, downgrades and initiations: ANF, BJS, CBE, GENZ, ROK, SI ...

Analyst upgrades:

  • Citigroup upgraded Cooper Industries (NYSE: CBE) to Buy from Hold on valuation as it believes commercial construction concerns are well known. The firm raised its target on shares to $40 from $37, and coupled the upgrade with a downgrade of Rockwell Automation (NYSE: ROK) to Sell from Hold.
  • Credit Suisse upgraded BJ Services (NYSE: BJS) to Neutral from Underperform following its acquisition by Baker Hughes (NYSE: BHI). The firm raised its target to $17.
  • Credit Suisse also upgraded Amkor Technology (NASDAQ: AMKR) to Outperform from Neutral and raised its target to $8 from $7. The firm expects Amkor to benefit from near-term strength in the supply chain and the mix shift towards higher value packaging.
  • Textron (NYSE: TXT) was upgraded to Conviction Buy from Neutral at Goldman.
  • Siemens (NYSE: SI) was upgraded to Neutral from Sell at UBS.
  • Stanley Works (NYSE: SWK) was upgraded to Buy from Neutral at Janney Montgomery.
