The increase in data from mobile devices and 'cloud' applications programs delivered over the Internet are creating demand for more computing and storage systems. This week will bring plenty more data for investors in and watchers of the sector to mull over. Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL), AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T), and Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT), for example, are expected by analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial to post modest earnings gains from a year ago, to $1.11 per share (on $8.1 billion in sales), $0.72 per share (on $31.3 billion in sales), and $0.47 per share (on $14.8 billion in sales) respectively. All three of these companies ended the week closer to their 52-week lows than highs, and analysts on average consider them each a buy.

Here's a look at some of the week's biggest expected earnings gainers and decliners in the sector:

I've taken a leg in the Ultra QQQ ProShares (AMEX: QLD). The market has popped 2% off lows, the question is will it pop the full 7%?

I'm seeing a few positive divergences and the percentage of stocks below the 50 day moving average is well below the 2002 levels. I haven't looked at the percentage of stocks below the 200 day, but I'm sure the reading should be equally distressed.

I know people are pricing in earnings per share Armageddon in tech land -- so the question is, what happens to many of these stocks if it's really just sort of "punk" and not a total cataclysmic drop in revenue guidance.

XM SATELLITE RADIO HOLDINGS INC (NASDAQ: XMSR)

Word is that there's more than one bid out for the satellite radio company. We know about the merger agreement with Sirius Satellite Radio Inc's (NASDAQ: SIRI), so who's the other party? Or, is there another party? Some are convinced it's just talk. No names are even floating around. But for XM to walk away from Sirius would cost them a $175M break-up fee. They'd have to really be serious about another offer to do that.

BUILDING MATERIALS HOLDING CORPORATION (NYSE: BLG)

In May, Robert L .Chapman of Chapman Capital, the "activist investor", said Building Materials Holding Corp. should consider selling all or parts of itself. Then he upped his stake to 8.1% in the residential construction services provider. Now comes word that the company may have hired, or be in the process of hiring, a strategic advisor.

Continue reading This week's rumor round-up: More bids for XM Satellite Radio?

This week's rumor round-up: More bids for XM Satellite Radio? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 06 Jul 2007 15:30:00 EST. What will it buy next?

Before getting to that, it's worth pointing out that the notion of borrowing money to buy a high tech company is not that great. The reason is that high tech companies can quickly fall behind and lose market share if they don't come up with new products. And private equity does not usually like to invest in R&D. But if private equity buys a company with long-standing customer relationships, such concerns may be offset by the substantial cost reductions available.

Having said that, here's a list of potential candidates:

Nortel Networks Corp. (NYSE: NT). This network equipment supplier lost $103 million on $2.5 billion in sales in the first quarter of 2007. It also lost out on its bid to acquire Avaya, Inc. (NYSE: AV). With a market capitalization of $11.4 billion, a 30% premium would make this $14.8 billion deal the biggest network equipment LBO.

Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU). This network equipment supplier lost $590 million on $12.3 billion in sales in 2006. With a market capitalization of $30.9 billion, a 30% premium would make this the biggest deal of the lot at $40.1 billion. Given the integration challenges between a U.S. and French firm and the enormous legacy costs, an LBO of this firm might be quite profitable.

Juniper Networks Inc. (NASDAQ: JNPR). This network equipment supplier lost $1 billion on $2.3 billion in sales in 2006. With a market capitalization of $13.9 billion, a 30% premium would make this an $18 billion deal. Unlike NT, however, I think JNPR will resist the LBO route because it has not been around long enough to accumulate the kind of legacy problems NT has in spades.

Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) does not seem to be paying attention. The company recently bought Netopia and is building its business in wireless modems and routers so that it can add IPTV capability to its products in the distribution of video, voice and data. Motorola has been strong in the cable service area since it bought cable set-top company General Instruments. Netopia gives it access to the DSL delivered television markets.

With the phone companies focused on delivering more services to be competitive within the cable market, Motorola is putting itself in the middle of that supply chain.

Cisco may be able to push around smaller competitors like Juniper, but Motorola is a different matter.
