Do they print out what is actually there or what we actually want to be there?

In fact, HP printers do not print out what they are given; they make the image deeper, darker and richer than it really is. I was a little surprised when I read that. When asked, HP admitted they improve the photos and they are giving the customers what they want.

Continue reading Do Hewlett-Packard Photo Printers Lie?

Do Hewlett-Packard Photo Printers Lie? originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Fri, 21 May 2010 12:30:00 EST. We also learned consumer spending in the U.S. rose in March by the most in five months, and many economists are predicting continued spending acceleration as the economy adds more jobs and gets back into the groove.

Already we've seen some red hot runs in the retail sector in anticipation of the consumer's return. Several consumer-related exchange-traded funds (ETFs) have been tearing things up on Wall Street lately -- lapping the broader market at least four times over!

There are lots of great individual retail stocks out there -- and no shortage of reasons to buy Walmart (WMT). But the fact is that blue chip retailers can often lag the broader sector, and small-cap retailers can sometimes be too volatile for many investors.
Continue reading Three Retail ETFs Beating the Market Four Times Over

Three Retail ETFs Beating the Market Four Times Over originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 12 May 2010 09:30:00 EST.
The film world has, after all, been moping since Polaroid stopped producing its iconic instant camera film in early 2008 (take heart, Polaroid fans, "The Impossible Project" is working to reinvent instant film in an old Polaroid factory in the Netherlands). But today Eastman Kodak (NYSE: EK) said it was halting production of the complex-yet-storied Kodachrome film, immediately. Not only does the product make up less than 1% of its worldwide still-picture film sales; it's extraordinarily expensive to produce.

Continue reading Kodak pulls Kodachrome in a blow to sentimentality

Kodak pulls Kodachrome in a blow to sentimentality originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Mon, 22 Jun 2009 17:20:00 EST.
Rochester, New York-based Eastman Kodak Co. (NYSE: EK) was founded in 1892, and is well known for its wide range of photographic film products; it remains to this day the largest supplier of photographic films in the world. The company played a vital role in the invention and development of the motion picture industry, setting the standard of 35 mm film.

But times change. In 1999, Kodak entered into the consumer inkjet photo printers market in a joint venture with manufacturer Lexmark (NYSE: LXK). In 2004, Kodak announced it would stop producing traditional film cameras, beginning a multiyear struggle to refocus on digital photography and printing. Some of the results of that effort include the Kodak Smart Picture Frame, into which digital files are downloadable via a network connection. The Kodak Gallery is a website where users can upload photos into albums, print them out, and create mouse pads, calendars, and the like. Loyal, quick and intelligent are good qualities to look for in a canine. But professional?

While Circuit City searches high and low for the pooch in a business suit, Kodak is sharing the stage by pointing out that Americans who love to photograph their pets should consider using its EasyShare all-in-one printers.

Never mind that this dog and pony show says nothing about the quality, costs or types of services Circuit City's Firedog offerings will provide. Something about a smiling dog gets the American public all warm and fuzzy, and presumably more likely to rush out and buy new printers.

You too? Go ahead and bite. We know your dog is the cutest of them all. Visit this website and submit your doggy submissions until December 8, 2007. If your pet has that winning doggy style, Circuit City and Kokak will make a $50,000 donation to a local humane society of your choice.
Circuit City and Kodak team up to find the next 'firedog' originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Thu, 15 Nov 2007 15:15:00 EST. Photobucket is one of the largest properties on the internet with over 14.7 million unique visitors a month, according to NetRatings.

After the purchase of social network MySpace, News Corp went from an also-ran online to one of the largest internet networks. The company also has sites for its news organization and studio. Photobucket makes that footprint much bigger.

Photobucket supplies many of the photos loaded onto MySpace. As a matter of fact, it would appear that the two sites have a large number of unique visitors in common, which could have pushed the value of Photobucket's audience down a bit during the bidding. Duplicate audience is not usually worth as much as visitors who are completely unique. But, Photobucket is also a large video sharing site, so News Corp picks up a competitor to YouTube.

The large questions raised by the purchase is where companies like Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO) and Eastman Kodak Co. (NYSE: EK) were? Yahoo! has an online photo business, but with the company's problems it would seem that adding to that strategic part of its business would have made sense. Meanwhile, Kodak is struggling to move to a digital photo market. It has an online photo-sharing site, but picking up one of the largest sites in the industry might have helped the company with its turnaround.

It seems that Mr. Murdoch and the management at Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) are the only buyers with any stones.

But take note of these just for the heck of it.

UNITED RENTALS INC (NYSE: URI)

It's not news that the world's largest rental company has been for sale for a couple of weeks, but once again, as it is for so many speculative situations as this, there's an ongoing undercurrent of chatter. The CEO is retiring in June, and the COO will then hold down the fort. UBS (NYSE: UBS) and Credit Suisse (NYSE: CS) are offering advice. The company's in pretty good shape, and should attract some interesting offers. The stock keeps ticking slowly upward. But the rental market has slowed some. Stay tuned.

EASTMAN KODAK COMPANY (NYSE: EK)

The stock's been moving on up. Take over? Cash infusion? Fabulous new product release? Not one of us outsiders knows for sure what's up. So, what is up? Well, they sold the health imaging business and should get paid its $2.35B soon. Is Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) a potential merger partner? Maybe, maybe not. Last month it was reported that Kodak had eyes for OmniVision Technologies (NASDAQ: OVTI). Maybe after quarterly results are released May 4 there'll be a clearer Kodak moment. Just don't count on them to try and rejoin the Better Business Bureau anytime soon. Now there's a rumor.

CUMMINS INC (NYSE: CMI)

Shares hit a record high the other day, at least one brokerage firm upgraded the stock, and reports were that the engine maker was...you guessed it...the target of takeover "expectations." Is that like, expecting? Like expecting to be courted and bought? Fiat (NYSE: FIA) could be expecting cause they are among the "rumored" to want to expand their truck division in good old North America. Cummins, one of the few remaining independents worldwide, meanwhile has been humming along, with three straight years of record earnings. What a machine, eh? The BBB had commenced expulsion proceedings against the company, accusing the Kodak of failing to provide data regarding the resolution of consumer complaints filed with the Bureau. According to the USA Today:

During the last three years, Kodak customers have logged 183 complaints for problems ranging from repairs to digital cameras to difficulties communicating with customer service representatives, said David Polino, head of the regional Better Business Bureau.

While characterizing that number as "small for a large, multinational company," Polino said Kodak's response has been a corporate headache. Instead of revealing how the firm processed the complaints, he said Kodak's response has been to say ... nothing.

While the camera company may have valid complaints about the way that the BBB was handling issues, this just doesn't make sense to me. Polaroid and other competitors will now be able to advertise "Unlike our number 1 competitor, we are a member of the Better Business Bureau."

It sure seems like Kodak would have been better to bite the bullet and do what they had to do to appease the Bureau, because this does not look good from a PR perspective: The fact that it's being picked up in major newspapers could hurt the brand's reputation and sales.

There are some customers that are using those high-end digital cameras to turn captured pictures into 4x6 prints for that scrapbook or album. But, from my experience with almost everyone I see and come into contact these days, most are taking more pictures than ever -- but are sharing all those images via email and online picture hosting sites.

So, who is printing all these pictures in record amounts? Somebody is, as HP, Kodak and Lexmark are selling millions of inkjet consumer printers. In fact, Eastman Kodak Company (NYSE:EK) has announced that two of its "EasyShare All-in-One" printers are now available at consumer electronics retailer Best Buy Co., Inc. (NYSE:BBY).

These Kodak printers seem to be designed to replace the process of taking pictures with a digital camera and then taking the camera or memory card to a printing kiosk to have hard copies made. In other words, Kodak's lateness to the party regarding the consumer transition from film cameras to digital cameras is being attacked by its ferocity in the digital camera and consumer printer markets. This is a good thing -- and I hope it's enough to bring Kodak back from the brink.
Best Buy gets new "all in one" Kodak printers originally appeared on BloggingStocks on Wed, 21 Mar 2007 17:26:00 EST.
